Friends of the Western Buddhist Order
The FWBO is an international network dedicated to communicating Buddhist truths in ways appropriate to the modern world. The essence of Buddhism is timeless and universal. But the forms it takes always adapt according to context. Now that Buddhism has come to the West, the task is to create new Buddhist traditions relevant to the 21st century. During the past 35 years the FWBO has become one of the largest Buddhist movements, with activities in many cities around the world.

Welcome!

Sydney Buddhist Centre.
The Sydney Buddhist Centre is part of a worldwide movement, the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) which was founded in 1967 by the Venerable Sangharakshita.
The movement has an unmistakable flavour and approach to the Buddha's teaching, which draws on the entire Buddhist tradition yet expresses itself through the modern Western idiom in a fresh and dynamic way. The Sydney Buddhist Centre has been running activities in various locations since 1981. It provides facilities where you can learn meditation, find out about Buddhism and meet people with similar interests. It also provides workshops, retreats and creative activities to help you improve the quality of your life. All the teachers at the Centre are Buddhists who are striving to put the ideals of Buddhism into practice in their daily lives, however the meditation techniques can be used by anyone regardless of their religion or background. Through the teachings of the Buddha we can use our meditation practice to transform ourselves, to discover our potential and have a positive effect on society.
