Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, and the Fourth Way
George Gurdjieff and Peter Ouspensky introduced the powerful ideas of the Fourth Way to those seeking to know the truth about man's existence on earth. As Gurdjieff explained, "You do not realize your own situation. You are in prison. All you can wish for, if you are a sensible man, is to escape. But how? No one can escape from prison without the help of those who have escaped before. An organization is necessary."
Gurdjieff said that the Fourth Way does not require a person to give up the usual conditions of life; indeed, these conditions are ideal for self-observation. Unlike the other three ways of enlightenment (the way of the Fakir, the way of the Monk, the way of the Yogi), the Fourth Way, as Gurdjieff describes, must be found. When you find a Fourth Way school that is led by one who has broken the chains of sleep and attained a higher level of consciousness, you are instructed to reach the full potential of your human evolutionary possibilities. You are taught to free yourself from the sleep-induced power of your stimulus-response machine. You are taught to remember yourself. You are taught to awaken.

East and West
URI http://www.geocities.com/tokyo/1236/eastwest5.html Unless the wisdom of the East and the energy of the West can be harnessed and used harmoniously, the world will be destroyed. A day will come when the Eastern world will again rise to a position of world importance and become a threat to the momentarily all-powerful, all-influential new culture of the western world, which is dominated by America- a country that is very strong, to be sure, but also very young. The time is very short: it is necessary to achieve this harmony as soon as possible to avoid complete disaster. If enough individuals can develop themselves, even partially, into genuine, natural men, able to use the real potentialities that are proper to mankind, each such individual would then be able to convince and win over as many as a hundred other men, who would, each in his turn upon achieving development, be able to influence another hundred, and so on. History has already proven to us that such tools as politics, religion, and any other organized movements which treat man

5. On The Fourth Way
A group of essays based on the fourth way ideas of GI Gurdjieff, PDOuspensky, and Rodney Collin Introduction. For the most part
http://www.rahul.net/raithel/otfw/
Introduction
For the most part, these essays assume a knowledge of the material presented by P. D. Ouspensky in a series of ten lectures he or his students would give to people interested in hearing about the work that they were engaged in. Today, those lectures are available in two books: The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution and The Cosmology of Man's Possible Evolution . The context in which Ouspensky acquired the source of this material from G. I. Gurdjieff, as well as much of the same material, is described in Ouspensky's In Search of the Miraculous Without some familiarity (and in some cases a lot of familiarity) with the ideas as expounded in those books, the essays may not make much sense. The essays listed below are divided into two groups: psychological and cosmological. The cosmological ideas of the fourth way are closely bound with the psychological practices - this is not an armchair philosophy but an active way of life. The psychological and cosmological teachings go hand-in-hand, as "one hand washes the other", and simply reading or talking about the fourth way is to miss it. "Speaking generally, you will never understand what I wish to convey if you merely listen."

FOURTH WAY material: Author of this site "The (person who has succeeded in this Workthe Fourth Way)... will "remember himself"... for him consciousness will not be dependent on special associations, but will be that which accompanies them always, fasting or drinking wine, alone or in a crowd, laboring or meditating. It will be that which... lights up all that happens." Rodney Collin "What is the first characteristic of self-remembering? In this state (the individual person) is not the center. He or she is not 'separate'. Sitting in a room... they are aware of the WHOLE ROOM, of themself as only one of the objects in it. They are likewise aware of others and do not put themself above others, or criticize or judge. This is not love but is the beginning of love. In this state a person has no 'self' as they usually are aware of it. It is quite impossible for them to consider or become negative, for they moment they do, the state will vanish." George Gurdjieff "A student must search out and select the 'Teacher', as much as the teaching individual must discern and 'accept' who they feel is a capable and valuable 'Student'. Be aware not just of what you seek; be equally as curious as to what you offer. Do you have within what deserves a Teacher's time, attention, and giving... from the fountain of this historical, sacred, and great Work?"

It will also serve to help distribute Fourth Way materials, including art , directly viewable literature , and recommended reading lists with possible sources for suggested materials. You can even order books by spiritual leaders such as Deepak Chopra, Idries Shah, Maurice Nicoll and G. I. Gurdjieff right here. Just jump to The Fourth Way Connection Bookstore First, what is The Fourth Way? Also known by the names The Work, The Teachings, The Way Of The Sly Man, Sufism, and a host of other names, The Fourth Way is a system of knowledge and exercises designed to expand and elevate the consciousness and rid oneself of negative emotions like fear and hate. It is not a fad, pop psychology, or a game. It is a serious discipline that requires years of work (hence the name, The Work). It involves a great deal of serious self-examination. For a more detailed discussion of the process, you can download the free book "How The Mind Works And How To Make It Work Better." This is by far not a complete description of this material, but it will serve as a starter for people who want to understand the basic concepts.

As organized religion has declined, new surrogate beliefs, many of them based on pseudoscientific rationality, have sprung up. These are what Dr. Christopher Evans calls the cults of unreason, man's attempt to fit technology to a religion-like belief. Evans discusses a number of these new "religions" - Scientology, the flying-saucer cults, the alpha-wave-feedback churches, the Eastern mysticism sects - describing how they were founded, how they operate, and how they are helpful or harmful to their followers. In many of these cults naivete and sophistication work side by side; ideas about advanced psychology and physiology are juxtaposed with remnants of pre-Christian myths and nineteenth-century occultism. All of the cults of unreason have one thing in common: they attempt to satisfy man's need to reach simple, understandable answers to the confusion around him. Dr. Evans wonders if we can expect more and more of these pseudo-religions as the hapless individuals in our society are confronted with newer and even more unwanted life styles and expectations. It is possible that systematized "unreason" is man's only possible response, and as such is not only necessary but welcome.

The Fourth Way
" One must do everything one can and then say 'God have Mercy!' " G. I. Gurdjieff The idea of the fourth way is strongly associated with Gurdjieff, who appears to have been the first to use this phrase. The bulk of his discussion of this idea is to be found in Ouspensky's record of his teaching in Russia, In Search of the Miraculous . In his own writings, the idea is implicit but never mentioned as such (this is similar to his teaching on the enneagram). In Russia, he referred to three traditional ways:
  • Way of the Fakir, involving effort in the body
  • Way of the Monk, involving devotion and concentration of feeling
  • Way of the Yogi, involving largely mental attention. In the fourth way, effort is made in all three: body, feeling and mind. This is harmonious development, as in Gurdjieff's Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. To some degree, his series of movements or 'sacred gymnastics' epitomised this approach (in the learning of them rather than their performance). His inner exercises, insofar as these are reported, usually involved an act of mental concentration combined with physical effort; the feelings are also involved but spontaneously in the 'I am' state. As with the other ways, the fourth requires its own kind of social organisation. How this has been interpreted has varied from group to group. However, in contrast with the traditional ways, the fourth does not require separation from conditions of ordinary life. Indeed, Gurdjieff often indicated that these conditions were ideal, especially in times of turmoil, for the 'awakening' process that he so strongly advocated and which is integral to the effectiveness of the fourth way. At the same time, work with others of like mind is essential.

If you are familiar with Fourth Way principles and are interested in pursuing your work further, please contact us Metaphysics, philosophy, art, poetry, drama-these different inquiries into and expressions of the nature of man have one thing in common: they attempt to explain man's relationship to himself and to the world around him. The Fourth Way, which is an ancient system of ideas that appeared throughout the ages under these different guises, not only describes man as he is, but more importantly, describes him as he may become. Before we can hope to attain our full potential, however, we must first understand who we are. And here we come to a primary principle of the Fourth Way: we do not know ourselves . If we were able to see ourselves objectively, we would see that we are actually machines incapable of independent movement, living our lives in a trance-like waking state The Fourth Way begins with self-study. This study involves observing ourselves as a human machine. What we are, however, is more than a sleeping machine. Through specific efforts over a long time and with outside guidance, we can awaken the Sleeping Beauty within us.

    THE FOURTH WAY SYSTEM
FOR PERSONAL EVOLUTION - A SUMMARY
(based on the ideas of George Gurdjieff)
In this twenty-first century, the psychological teachings of George Gurdjieff and Peter Ouspensky continue to have a global influence. Of Greek-Armenian descent, George Gurdjieff (1872-1949), reputedly journeyed through Central Asia, as the twentieth century began, in pursuit of esoteric knowledge of the full potential of man. He reportedly identified a system of balanced, personal development in the tradition of the "Fourth Way" which has variously been termed: the way to heaven, enlightenment, consciousness, and self-realisation. The Fourth Way entails developing all sides of one's being simultaneously yet without having to withdraw from the current circumstances of one's life. Gurdjieff communicated his understanding to his personal students and through his writings: "Meetings with Remarkable Men"; the enigmatic and challenging "Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson"; and the tantalisingly incomplete "Life is Real Only Then, When I am'". In his book "In Search of the Miraculous", Gurdjieff's principal student, the Russian writer Peter Ouspensky (1878-1947), documented the fundamental ideas of Gurdjieff's system of human psychological development. As the sub-title "Fragments of an Unknown Teaching" acknowledged, it was not a complete exposition of Gurdjieff's teaching.
