The Exclusive Brethren are an Evangelical Protestant Christian church related to the Christian or Open Brethren. Members follow a rigid code of conduct based very strictly on Bible teaching, which provides a firm moral framework and is focussed on a strong family unit. They keep themselves separate from other people (including other Christians) as far as possible, because they believe the world is a place of wickedness. They regard 'exclusiveness' as the only way to keep away from evil. The main group of Exclusive Brethren are called 'Taylorites' after James Taylor Senior and Junior who led the church for much of the twentieth century. This group is secretive so most of the information available about them comes from people who have left it. As a result the Exclusive Brethren often gets a bad press and is referred to using phrases like "an exclusive and secret religious sect" or "a secretive church".

Site Closure Notice
The web site at www.cloudnet.com/~dwyman/pb.html is closed. There are no pages available beyond this. All rights to documents I authored on the former site are reserved. The site has closed for personal reasons. There are many priorities competing for my time and energy and the site ended up on the bottom of the list. To those who contributed to the site with opinions, correspondence, humor and wit, my thanks. You have made my life richer and I think you have done so for many others as well. To those who have used the site to connect with friends and loved ones from around the earth, I share your delight in the ways electronic technology can bring us all closer together and I sincerely hope the work I've been doing is assumed by someone else. To those of you who have formed new relationships, my congratulations. If memory serves, four or five marriages have developed from connections first made via the website. To all who have found love, may it be sustained. For all who seek it, may it be found. To those who we call 'lurkers', those visitors who read and listen but never contribute, my best wishes. I bear no ill will.

The Exclusive Brethren is not a democratic movement, nor do individual congregations have any autonomy. All members must follow the rigid code of behaviour and rules that govern the contact they can have with outsiders. This is far from the Open Brethren idea that individual churches should have a great deal of freedom in their dealings with others. Leadership Members of Exclusive Brethren churches are expected to be totally loyal to the leader of the Exclusive Brethren. This leader is given titles such as 'The Man of God' or 'The Elect Vessel'. The leader is regarded as a person of inherent moral power, following in the tradition of the leaders of the past and upholding their teaching in such a way as to lift the membership out of the world of wickedness. The leader of the church has overall power over members of the sect. He appoints local priests, resolves disputes, approves all marriages and decides on levels of punishment for breaches of discipline.

Exclusive Brethren (1/2)
Often referred to mistakenly as 'Plymouth Brethren', the Exclusive Brethren is in fact an extremist offshoot of the former. Founded in 1825 by a clergyman dissenter called John Nelson Derby, the Plymouth Brethren always had strongly predeterminist views - it was the duty of God's chosen to avoid all contact with the ungodly. Friendship, business or even eating with those outside the Brethren was forbidden. The founders of Exclusive Brethren believed that this isolationism should not be compromised in any way - today's members are not allowed television, radio, newspapers, fax machines or computers. They do not vote, join unions, take civil office or allow their children to take part in sports or social activities at school. Men wear jacket and tie; women must have long hair, modest clothes and no make-up. Sunday worship begins at 6am in Brethren Meeting Rooms (which have blocked-out windows) and goes on all day.

Members are not allowed to communicate with relatives who have left the movement. There are estimated to be 10,000 members of the Exclusive Brethren in the UK. The movement has enjoyed a string of strong leaders and is currently under the command of an Australian called John Hales.

The Exclusive Brethren
Within the U.K. most Brethren churches are 'Open Brethren'. There is, however, another, separate group, known as the 'Exclusive Brethren'. In the early days of the 'Plymouth Brethren' movement, the movement divided, because a member who had been excommunicated from one fellowship, was allowed to take communion in another. Those who believed this was unacceptable followed the lead of J N Darby and became known as 'Darbyites', and later as 'Exclusive Brethren'. The Exclusive Brethren meeting rooms have no windows. In most of their main beliefs, Exclusive Brethren are the same as other Christians. However, their emphasis on the verse 'Let every one who names the name of the Lord withdraw from iniquity' ( The Bible, 2 Timothy chapter 2 verse 19 ) has led them to live their lives as separately as possible. They believe everyone who does not follow their beliefs to be iniquitous, and therefore to be avoided as far as possible, and especially to be excluded from 'Breaking Bread' (Communion). These quotes are from the 'Darby' translation of the Bible, which they invariably use. This chart lists some of the differences between 'Exclusive' and 'Open' Brethren.
