INTRODUCTION
The 2001 Churchwide Assembly has mandated that this church engage in a study on homosexuality and a study on sexuality. The first is to deal with the blessing of same-gender unions and the rostering of persons in committed gay or lesbian relationships. The second is to lead to the development of a social statement on sexuality. As we embark on these two closely intertwined studies, let us consider doing so under the banner, "Journey Together Faithfully." This is both a

End-of-Life Decisions
Print-Friendly Version of this Statement Download this Statement to your PDA (19KB) This message was approved by the board of the Division for Church in Society. It was adopted by the ELCA Church Council on November 9, 1992. With this message, the Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, upon the recommendation of the Division for Church in Society, addresses some timely aspects of end-of-life situations and encourages further deliberation on the topic throughout this church. This message does not deal with the full scope of these complex matters. It draws upon a relevant social statement, "Death and Dying," of a predecessor church body as basis for the guidance it offers. The Occasion
An elderly woman contemplates in terror the possibility that she might be kept alive for months by means of life-support systems. A son visits a nursing home weekly to see his 95 year-old mother, who is stricken with Parkinson's disease and who wants to die. Family and friends share the slow, anguishing death of a young man with AIDS. Parents agonize with their pastor over what to do about their daughter who survives in a persistent vegetative state after a car accident. Increasingly, people know from their own experience similar painful dilemmas. While the achievements of modern medicine have been used to prolong and enhance life for many, they have also helped create an often dreaded context for dying. Costly technology may keep persons alive, but frequently these persons are cut off from meaningful relationships with others and exist with little or no hope for recovery. Many fearfully imagine a situation at the end of their lives where they or their trusted ones will have no say in decisions about their treatment.

http://www.lutheranmaritime.org/
chaplain@lutheranmaritime.org Tuesday, June 01, 2004 Home About Us Newsletters Seafarers are the lifeblood of our global economy. Without them there would not be foreign products in our stores. All you have to do is look at the labels on everything you purchase to realize that most items are imported. Ninety-five percent of all the world's cargo is moved via ships. Lutheran Maritime Ministry also is committed to working with fishers and the crew of cruise ships; the total amount of seafarers worldwide is ten million! However, most people around the world know little about these men and women and the dangers they face daily, that enables countries to interact in the global economy. Cargo ship seafarers - Most cargo ship seafarers come from the developing countries of the world. Most seafarers work 12 hours a day 7 day a week for nine months. Some seafarers make as little as $50.00 per month. The dangers of sea have not changed; weather is still a big factor, last week alone I know of two ships that were lost in the Pacific. With all the hype on the movie "The Perfect Storm" I am hoping that people will become aware of the dangers these men and women face every day at sea. There are man-made dangers also. Ship owners often try to save money by not properly maintaining their ships, since the ship and cargo are insured they risk little but the seafarers must risk all. Why do these men and women work on ships? For the money; for where they come from, there is no Welfare System, no Social Security and not enough jobs for all. For the sake of their families the seafarers give up every chance for a normal life to earn a living at sea. Container ships and Oil tankers are seldom in port more than 12 hours and many of the seafarers never leave the ship for nine months.

Welcome!

Worship, study, Christian fellowship and service for the entire family. The joys of Christian experience offered to you in the name of Jesus Christ are designed to assist you in your spirtual growth and life. Brothers and Sisters in Christ
We are truly a blessed people, having been claimed in the waters of Holy Baptism and marked with the cross of Christ for all eternity. We have been washed of our sins and nourished at our Lord's table so that we may share in His ongoing saving work. We have been equipped with many and varied gifts for this task. Now as we enter into the new millennium, we are empowered to use these gifts as we lift up the Good News of Jesus Christ. Together in prayer we seek the Lord's guidance and direction so that His will and way for our ministry may be opened to us. We pray for the power of His Holy Spirit to grant us wisdom and understanding as we step out in faith and trust into our future which is in God's hands. God's peace be with you!
