Background
Swedish Lutheran immigrants founded the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant of America (now ECC) on February 20 in Chicago, Illinois A pietistic religious awakening swept through Sweden around the middle of the 19th century . Out of this awakening and reformation came the Swedish Mission Covenant Church in . The state church discouraged and often persecuted the gathering of these believers. It was people from this movement that emigrated to America and formed the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant . Early leaders (Frans-Gustav Petersson-Haggquist, 1843-1936; Axel E. Karlson, 1858-1910; David Nyvall, 1863-?; P.P. Waldenström 1838-1917, et al.) desired to create a voluntary covenant of churches that were committed to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ , as well as provide means for ministerial training. The name was changed to the

Out of the Ashes
The 1 st Steward aboard the container ship “Monica” grew up in Yugoslavia. His family lives in what we now call Croatia. The steward turned 55 this year, and his country fell apart into civil war and economic chaos, so as a young-middle-aged man, he went to sea in order to provide financial stability for his family. The steward's daughter turned 23 this year, and in the fall she'll travel to Belgium to begin a graduate program in architecture. The steward sat with Chaplain Cushing in the messroom of the Monica not long ago, speaking about his daughter and the hard years away from home. “She's there because I'm here,” he said. “If she accomplishes that, then all of this will have been worth it.” Chaplain Cushing told the seafarer that in building a stable present for his daughter out of the rubble which was Yugoslavia, he had already succeeded as a man and as a father. God honors sacrifice, vocation, and difficult but noble choices. A mainstay of our pastoral ship visits includes listening to the stories of the seafarers, lending a sympathetic ear, and celebrating with them their successes and their sacrifices. We affirm their courage in living and give outside recognition to their dignity.

History of Evangelical Covenant Church
A group of Swedish families organized the Swedish Mission Church in 1889. It was built five miles north of Pomeroy where the many Swedish pioneer families had settled. It cost about $400.00 The Swedish Mission church was built in town about 1893, to accommodate several families living in town. When it was finished, the ladies met and scrubbed and cleaned it up, preparing for the first meeting. However, that evening, July 6, the Pomeroy Cyclone demolished the church. In 1897 they built another church. The pastor of the country church came in every Sunday evening and held services in the town church. The town church was closed in about 1946, as most of the families now had cars and could drive out to the country church. Pastors serving this church were Rev. Lars Larson, Rev. Blomstrand, Rev. A. F. Youngdale, Rev. J. H. Hanson, Rev. August Johnson, Rev. Edmund Carlson, Rev. Francis Grantz, and the present pastor is Rev. Quentin Larson. Families living here at this time were: Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Johnson - grocery and general merchandise store

Our mission is to introduce seekers to a personal relationship with God, while developing believers into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. We believe those truths that Christians have always believed:
  • That God is our creator and Loving Father That Jesus, His Son, came to be our Savior and show us life at its very best That the Holy Spirit is at work in the world and the church, drawing people to Himself That to love God and others are life’s most important pursuits That we are separated from God by sin and need to experience a spiritual rebirth to live forever as His child

It is a mystery. Why would anyone choose Christianity in the face of abundant evidence to the contrary? There seems to be no valid basis for belief in God. Where is the solid, tangible proof that our logical side needs to rationalize belief?
The media is a business. Jesus Christ was a

A Conventicle in Cyberspace
By Brad Boydston The first thing I switch on when I walk in the office is the computer. A couple of minutes later, after a few simple clicks of the mouse, our computer is making unearthly squawking noises as it accesses the phone line and then connects with our Internet provider. Soon the computer begins to download all the email (electronic mail) that has accumulated overnight. It takes about 30 seconds to transfer the messages into my computer's mailbox.
