EPISCOPAL THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY OF THE SOUTHWEST. The Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest was begun in Austin by John E. Hines, coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Texas, because the established theological seminaries of the Protestant Episcopal Church qv Two gifts strengthened the infant seminary. First, it received a bequest from the estate of Ann Laird of Kilgore and was thus able to add to the faculty. Second, the library of the former De Lancy Divinity School of Buffalo, New York, was given to the seminary by Bishop Laurisand L. Scaife of the Diocese of Western New York. The De Lancy Divinity School was no longer active and its library no longer in use. It contained a collection of English sources now out of print and hard to replace. The seminary received a charter from the state of Texas in 1951 and was recognized as an agency of the Diocese of Texas in January of 1952. At the same time it was recognized by two other dioceses in Texas, West Texas and Dallas, which had sent students to it and shared in its board of trustees. Its title, "of the Southwest," reflected this. The need for a campus was met by the donation of an Austin family, Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Villavaso and Frederick Duncalf

Bishop Gray to Lead Rally for Religious Toleration in Sudan
The Diocese of Virginia will sponsor a march to the Embassy of the Sudan this Wednesday, May 26,10:30 a.m. beginning at DuPont Circle in Washington, D.C. The incident which prompted this peaceful protest was the forcible eviction of all staff of the Episcopal Church of the Sudan (ECS) national office on May 20th. The purpose of the march is to support our brothers and sisters who suffer ongoing persecution in Sudan and to educate U.S. leaders who can intervene to bring about change. All members and congregations are encouraged to join in the march. For more information, call 1-800-DIOCESE. Task Force on Giving Announces Community Hearings The Task Force on Giving, appointed by Bishop Lee at the request of the 209th Council, will host four community hearings in late May and early June. The Task Force hopes to receive input from as broad an audience as possible with regard to future methods of parish funding for the diocesan budget. To give focus to the commentary, the group has written a paper for your review and comment. To see the document and a schedule of the hearings

OUR CHURCH
St. James is a friendly and diverse community. The parish can be described as traditional with an emphasis on family values. We are a family size church with room for singles and single parent families. St. James has two Eucharistic services on Sunday, the first using Rite I and without music, the second uses Rite II and choir and organ music with a periodic guitar mass and contemporary music. Nursery is available at each service. Coffee and refreshments follow each service in the parish hall. Children are welcomed, invited and included in our parish events. Sunday School is offered for all ages between the services. Adults are offered a choice of Bible Study on the Sunday readings or a Serendipity discussion group. Bible Study is also offered for EYC youth on Tuesday evenings and for all ages on Wednesday morning at 10:45. Eucharist with Unction is offered on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM. A Bible Study follows this service in the Conference Room.
OUR PASTOR
The position of rector at St. James is currently vacant. Serving in the position of interim priest for us is the Reverend Sue Bell.

When learning in Sunday School that superheroes of the Bible “were really people just like us, who did good things for people who needed help,” children at Incarnation/Holy Sacrament Church in Drexel Hill made items for families at Ronald McDonald House. The gifts were presented during Bishop Lee’s visitation to the church on Sunday, February 15, and delivered to the House the following week. Included with money that the children raised were a gingerbread man pillow, lap quilts and mugs filled with toiletries.
