Johann Georg Hamann reductio ad absurdum of Enlightenment thought: Scientific reason leads us inevitably either to doubt or to deny the reality of the world around us. Three of Hamann’s intellectual achievements are of particular significance: His writings Socratic Memorabilia ) and Aesthetica in nuce Aesthetics in a Nutshell ), in which he opposed Enlightenment thought with an indirect and ironic mode of discourse emphasizing the importance of aesthetic experience and the role of genius in intuiting nature; his views on language; and his influential criticisms of Kant’s critical thought, expressed in his "Metakritik über den Purismum der Vernunft" and in his commentary, in a letter to Johann Gottfried Herder, on Kant’s essay "What is Enlightenment?"

and Aesthetica in nuce Hamann’s rejection of the Enlightenment was greeted with distress by his friends Kant and Berens. Although they hoped that he could be won back to the cause of reason, these hopes were dashed with the publication in 1759 of , and the following year of Aesthetica in nuce . Together these two works offer a world-view that might be described as antirationalist but not irrationalist. Hamann’s intention in the is to offer a defense of religious faith that renders such faith immune against rational attack while in no way accepting the rationalist’s terms of debate. In order to do this, however, he faces a seemingly insoluble problem: He must undermine the grounds of the Enlightenment view of reason and religion without committing himself to other, opposed positions that are subject to rational criticism and refutation. Several aspects of how he goes about this were very influential in German thought in the 18

What is Reality?
It is impossible to say what Reality is for a very simple reason: there is nothing else. Usually, we define any idea or concept by comparing it to something else. Thus, we establish the boundaries and impose some polarity onto the primordial mass of raw perception. But when we talk about Reality, we immediately lose this ground, and consequently cannot describe it. There is nothing it could be compared to. There is nothing that is not Reality. One may decide to challenge this view. For instance, one may feel the urge to "break free" from this vision of Reality, and to conceive the following: "This one Reality vision works fine if we imagine that the coherence of our Universe hangs together neatly. But what if we assume that there is another, totally different Universe that is totally separate from ours, and that is consequently subject to the completely different set of rules and logic?" In the light of Reality, this argument amounts to nothing. Even if there is such a bizarre occasion (as an existence of a "parallel Universe") it would immediately be included in Reality. Whatever new we may discover, it's going to be included in Reality. Even the exclusion of something from Reality is included in Reality. This is an Absolute, a totalitarian discourse that doesn't sit well with philosophers and clear thinkers. But, that's how things are: it is Reality-as-is.

Today when a periodical asks its readers a question, it does so in order to collect opinions on some subject about which everyone has an opinion already; there is not much likelihood of learning anything new. In the eighteenth century, editors preferred to question the public on problems that did not yet have solutions. I don't know whether or not that practice was more effective; it was unquestionably more entertaining. In any event, in line with this custom, in November 1784 a German periodical, Berlinische Monatschrift published a response to the question: Was ist Aufklärung? And the respondent was Kant. A minor text, perhaps. But it seems to me that it marks the discreet entrance into the history of thought of a question that modern philosophy has not been capable of answering, but that it has never managed to get rid of, either. And one that has been repeated in various forms for two centuries now. From Hegel through Nietzsche or Max Weber to Horkheimer or Habermas, hardly any philosophy has failed to confront this same question, directly or indirectly. What, then, is this event that is called the Aufklärung and that has determined, at least in part, what we are, what we think, and what we do today? Let us imagine that the

The first of the major philosophers was Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746). IMMANUEL KANT. An Answer to the Question What is enlightenment? (1784). enlightenment is man s emergence from his selfimposed immaturity.

IMMANUEL KANT
An Answer to the Question:
What is Enlightenment? (1784)
Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude ! [dare to know] "Have courage to use your own understanding!"that is the motto of enlightenment. Thus, it is difficult for any individual man to work himself out of the immaturity that has all but become his nature. He has even become fond of this state and for the time being is actually incapable of using his own understanding, for no one has ever allowed him to attempt it. Rules and formulas, those mechanical aids to the rational use, or rather misuse, of his natural gifts, are the shackles of a permanent immaturity. Whoever threw them off would still make only an uncertain leap over the smallest ditch, since he is unaccustomed to this kind of free movement. Consequently, only a few have succeeded, by cultivating their own minds, in freeing themselves from immaturity and pursuing a secure course. If it is now asked, "Do we presently live in an enlightened age?" the answer is, "No, but we do live in an age of enlightenment." As matters now stand, a great deal is still lacking in order for men as a whole to be, or even to put themselves into a position to be able without external guidance to apply understanding confidently to religious issues. But we do have clear indications that the way is now being opened for men to proceed freely in this direction and that the obstacles to general enlightenmentto their release from their self-imposed immaturityare gradually diminishing. In this regard, this age is the age of enlightenment, the century of Frederick.

ENLIGHTENMENT INTENSIVE by Eileen Inge Herzberg Deep down, I'm very shallow, so I didn't really expect to get enlightened on the three day Enlightenment Intensive. Three days seemed a bit quick to expect the same sort of experience as Buddha and it was being held just outside Milton Keynes - not an obvious route to enlightenment! Apparently 30% of people who go on Enlightenment Intensives have an enlightenment experience, but could it happen to me? The workshop was held in a large old farmhouse on the outskirts of Hanslope village. There were huge vases of flowers, bowls of fruit and the usual paraphernalia of a family home - yet the mirrors were covered with material. The Intensive was being "mastered" by Jake Chapman - it was his job to give us the best possible chance of experiencing enlightenment. He was assisted by two Monitors and the cook, cookery writer Christine McFadden played a key role. On the first evening we waited around to be interviewed by the Master. When it was my turn I felt that he knew something I didn't - and whatever it was, it was very funny. Eventually we all met up in the big group room and listened to the Master tell us the rules for the weekend. We could accept the rules or leave. If we left we could have our money back (less the deposit). Sitting cross legged on the sofa, the Master explained that we shouldn't smoke, drink alcohol, caffeine, take any form of drugs, wear make up, perfume, jewelry, watches, and the men couldn't shave. No phone calls, no writing, no chatting, no mirrors - no distractions.

WELCOME TO MY HOMEPAGE ! Is It Time For You ...
To Awaken ?
MY JOURNEY TO ENLIGHTENMENT I have always believed in God, but I could not say until recently that I was a spiritual person. For me, the religion seemed to get in the way of being spiritual. I truly did not start my journey to enlightenment and spirituality until the summer of 1997. I began reading books on everything that I felt drawn toward, seeking to know about religions that I was unfamilar with, seeking to know about alternative healing methods such as Reiki and Hypnotherapy, and seeking any books with a theme toward reaching an enlightened society. I could not get enough. In the fall, I started classes in The Temple of Divine Mysteries, taught by the Rev. M. Michelle Griffin. This class lasted one year and during that time I learned so much to enhance my spiritual growth. I met my Spirit Guide, T, at this time. T radiates a pure love of which I have never experienced. She comforts me and aids me in decisions which lead to my higher purpose. My mind opened to a whole new world. During this same period of time, I started reading the Seth books channeled by Jane Roberts and began working on my belief system. I made a list of affirmations which I read daily from his material: The Point of Power is in the Present. There is no condition that I cannot change. I create my reality according to my beliefs; my creative energy makes this world; there are no limitations to my self except those I believe in. Through my being the power of God is strengthened, for I am a portion of what He is. I am He manifesting as me.
