Introduction
As the power of the aristocracy declined and revolutions swept away the Old Order, Art was reflecting the times. From the superficial intimacy of Rococo to the lofty ideals of Classicism, the artists commented on their environment. The Humanitarianist's biting satire, the Genre painter's warm insight, along with the landscapes and portraits of the age allow us to experience the climate of a changing world. Back to Top

LATEST NEWS: Avalon vs E I have taken a quick look at Longhorn's new GUI system called "Avalon". It's quite interesting in that it bears quite a set of resemblances to what Enlightenment has been doing for 0.17 (which is why it's taking so long as many of the things being done are as ambitious as Avalon but done in spare time by a small group of volunteers). I think now is a good time to talk about those interesting things. They have been brewing in CVS for enlightenment for a while (for those of you who don't know, CVS is a way of storing and sharing code between developers and providing revision control and code management). So the code has been developing for quite a long time, in bits and pieces. Anyone can check it out any time they like. It's all public, but done with very little fanfare. Now let's look at some of the things there. Let's start with one of the most interesting components: Edje . What is this? Well - in some ways it's like Avalon's UI markup. It allows a graphic designer to create abstract visual objects that interact with users and code on the other end, animate the object etc. It has many properties of the Avalon objects, adding to it relative positioning, sizing, resizability (native) scalability, and a compact file format and representation, allowing such graphic objects to be sent form one system to another in a single block of data without needing installing. So let's take a look at a VERY simple edje source file. These are known as "EDC" files. They are compiled into binary "EET" archive files by the edje_cc utility. These resulting files can be used on any system, anywhere without needing to be unpacked or installed specially. They can have their parts accessed at random very efficiently. I won't go into details of the format, but there is source code to read/write them and so the format is open as such. Now back to examples. Here is what a "simple" .edc looks like:

The Enlightenment
Although the intellectual movement called "The Enlightenment" is usually associated with the 18th century, its roots in fact go back much further. But before we explore those roots, we need to define the term. This is one of those rare historical movements which in fact named itself. Certain thinkers and writers, primarily in London and Paris, believed that they were more enlightened than their compatriots and set out to enlighten them.
They believed that human reason could be used to combat ignorance, superstition, and tyranny and to build a better world. Their principal targets were religion (embodied in France in the Catholic Church) and the domination of society by a hereditary aristocracy.
Background in Antiquity To understand why this movement became so influential in the 18th century, it is important to go back in time. We could choose almost any starting point, but let us begin with the recovery of Aristotelian logic by Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century. In his hands the logical procedures so carefully laid out by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle were used to defend the dogmas of Christianity; and for the next couple of centuries, other thinkers pursued these goals to shore up every aspect of faith with logic. These thinkers were sometimes called "schoolmen" (more formally, "scholastics,") and Voltaire frequently refers to them as "doctors," by which he means "doctors of theology."

Welcome to The Enlightenment Project. We are dedicated to providing advanced graphical libraries, tools, and environments. Currently, the project is made up of three different components: Enlightenment DR16, The Enlightenment Foundation Libraries, and Enlightenment DR17. While we are best known for the Enlightenment Window Manager itself there is a long history of providing advanced libraries and tools to support the window manager and other applications, such as Imlib, FNLib, and Imlib2, which extend far beyond the window manager itself in scope. Today, in development toward the DR17 Desktop Shell we have created an entirely new set of libraries and tools that provide more power and flexibility than any other group of graphical libraries available, which we refer to collectively as The Enlightenment Foundation Libraries. Enlightenment DR16 The Enlightenment DR16 window manager was released in 2000, along with it's dependencies Imlib and Fnlib, and remains in heavy usage today. While rumors of it's death still circulate, DR16.6 was release on Nov 2nd, 2003, and it remains in development today with a long life still ahead of it. DR16 has been the choice of power users and artists due to it's low overhead, highly graphical, widely theme-able, extremely configurable, yet unobtrusive interface. Nearly all functions of the window manager can be handled without mouse input, including application launching via
