MORATORIUM ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT No. 9131 Sense-of-the-Assembly Resolution. October 25-30, 1991. I. Theological Rationale: "You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But now I tell you, do no take revenge on someone who does you wrong. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too…You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your friends, hate your enemies.’ But now I tell you: love your enemies, and pray for those who mistreat you so that you will become children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do right and those who do wrong." Matthew 5:38-39, 43-45 (Good News). "Whichever one of you committed no sin may throw the first stone at her." John 8:7 (Good News). "If someone does evil to you, do not pay him back with evil. Do everything possible on your part to live at peace with all. Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God’s wrath do it. Do not let evil defeat you, instead, conquer evil with good." Romans 12:17-19, 21 (Good News). II. Other Supporting Evidence

Christian Church (disciples of christ). A Statement of Identity. Disciples way The Design for the Christian Church (disciples of christ).
http://www.bible.ca/cr-Disciples-C.htm
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) A Statement of Identity "Disciples always have opposed...the use of creeds to exclude persons from the church. It was (the) use of creeds as 'tests of fellowship' that the Disciples' founding fathers fingered as the major cause of division among Christians...(So) unlike most other churches, we Disciples do not have an official doctrinal statement we can refer to when someone asks, 'What does the Christian Church believe?'" Kenneth Teegarden The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a community of believers who through baptism into Jesus Christ are bound by covenant to God and to one another. Disciples draw their inspiration from Scripture and the Holy Spirit, celebrating around the Lord's Table the life, death and resurrection, and continuing presence of Christ. We proclaim the good news of salvation. We claim as our particular witness the quest for Christian unity as a sign of God's unity for the human community. While stressing freedom and diversity under God, we believe unity and mission are inseparable; we witness and serve among the whole human family in the interest of peace, justice, mercy and kindness. Composed by General Minister and President Emeritus Kenneth Teegarden, affirmed by the General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Christian Church Disciples of Christ and the restoration movement
The Restoration Movement lead to the formation of the Independent Christian Church , the Disciples of Christ, and the Churches of Christ. Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone and David Lipscomb were among the principle movement leaders in the 19th century.
"All sects and parties of the Christian world have departed, in greater or less degrees, from the simplicity of faith and manners of the first Christians." Alexander Campbell. The Restoration Movement was an attempt to reduce the splintering of the orthodox church by following only the teachings in the Christian Bible, rather than any human initiated authority or doctrine. The motto the Restorationists adopted was, "Back to the Bible". Their ultimate goal was that all Christians would band with them, desert their former religious practices and return to the sort of religious practice in the Bible, as much as it could be determined. But even the Restoration churches soon splintered. bodyOffer(26433) As early as the Revolutionary War ministers were balking at the restrictions of existing organizational structures. Methodist James O'Kelly (1757-1826) got freedom from Methodist oversight for himself and other circuit riding ministers by forming the Republican Methodist Church, whose name they changed in 1794 to the Christian Church. Abner Jones (1772-1841) and Elias Smith (1769-1846) broke from the Baptist church and formed more Restorationist Christian churches in New England. Among the 19th century's most prominent Restorationists were Thomas Campbell (1763-1854), his son Alexander Campbell(1788-1866), Barton Stone (1772-1884), Tolbert Fanning (1810-1874) and David Lipscomb (1831-1917).

From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
The Disciples of Christ , also known simply as the Christian Church , is a denomination of Christian Protestantism based on the teachings of Thomas Campbell and Alexander Campbell of Pennsylvania and Barton W. Stone and Virginia Stone of Kentucky . Both families were originally Presbyterians The roots of the Disciples of Christ lie in the Restoration Movement of the early , with a focus on Christian unity and lack of strict denominationalism. This focus came from a study of the New Testament by the movement's founders. Tolerance of other viewpoints that differed on non-essentials was key, as was inclusion based on the Lord's Table ( Communion ). It has been estimated that the indigenous movement that gave rise to the modern Disciples of Christ (and its associated offshoots) has only been surpassed in size by that of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Prominent members of the Disciples of Christ include U.S. Presidents James Garfield Lyndon Baines Johnson , and Ronald Reagan U.S. Senator

Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Campbellites
General Information The Disciples of Christ, or Christian Church, is part of the largest religious movement to have originated in the United States. The church numbers approximately 1.1 million members in the United States and Canada, and does overseas work in many other countries. The church had its beginnings in Kentucky and western Pennsylvania in 1804 - 09. Kentucky Presbyterian minister Barton W Stone and others who shared his liberal views on pulpit freedom and on associations across denominational lines withdrew from the Presbyterians to become "Christian only." Pennsylvanian Thomas Campbell split with the Presbyterians over his right to serve the Lord's Supper to Christians of different persuasions. The two groups united in 1832 as Campbell's son Alexander Campbell became the prominent figure in the movement. BELIEVE

In the 20th century there have been two separations: finding the "law" of Christian life exclusively in the New Testament, the Churches of Christ objected to musical instruments in worship and officially withdrew in 1906; the North American Christian Convention, another conservative faction, pulled away gradually between 1926 and 1969 and became known as the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. In 1968 the mainstream of the Disciples of Christ restructured itself, with a General Assembly directing operations.
