Congregationalist Church
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Congregationalist churches practice a congregationalist form of government, some of which trace their descent from the Congregational Church. The Congregational Church is a family of denominations of Christian Protestantism which arose from the Nonconformist religious movement in England, during the Puritan reformation. In Great Britain, the early congregationalists were called separatists or independents , and some congregationalists still call themselves "Independents" there. The Congregational Church was formed on a theory of union published by Robert Browne[?] , in 1592. They are the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock[?] , and the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony , which were organized in union by the Cambridge Platform[?] in There are difficulties identifying such a specific beginning, because given its distinguishing commitment to the complete autonomy of the local congregation, congregationalism is more easily identified as a movement rather than a single denomination. The idea that each distinct congregation fully constitutes the visible Church can be traced to

Greenville Congregational Church The Congregational Church was organized in 1840. On the 5th of October, 1841, a meeting was held “in the school-house near Mr. Townsend ’s, and, after prayer by Rev. William Bliss , voted and chose George W. Hunstable clerk pro tem. After due deliberation, on account of their former clerk having left this section of country, and not being able to find any records of the church, the members were reorganized.” So reads the old minute book of a congregation that was once vigorous with active Christian endeavor. The dust of years has almost blotted its quill-traced characters. Of the original congregation organized by Rev. Barras the following is a list, comprising those who afterward joined the organized body: Timothy Dumars, William Dumars, Isaac R. Bearce, Owen N. Rice, John Keck and John Babbit . The first deacons were G. W. Hunstable and Timothy Dumars.

Its a small congregation (40 people or so) with very friendly congregants. We were welcomed with open arms and smiles. Definately a place that made you feel like you just walked into an old forgotten friend's home. We can't say enough about how friendly and warm the congregation is. The relatively new pastor hails from Germany and gave a wonderful sermon (about temptation, it is lent afterall!) and included a sweet prayer for Emma (to have peace and love in this world) in the community prayer time. I think he must set the tone for the congregation, he was welcoming and warm himself. They are moving to a new location, and meet there once a month (to get a 'feel' for the neighborhood and its needs and how they might want to design their new building, I was told :). Its an 'older' congregation, Emma was the only child there. They had no qualms about a toddler in the service (handed us a packet with paper and crayons, stickers) and didn't have a separate place for children. It might be difficult for us to attend there regularly, Emma pretty much spends the entire service running around and talking/singing. Though they say they don't mind (and in fact seemed to enjoy her presence), it does make it difficult for us and Emma (she gets antsy quickly). Perhaps the occasional visit and maybe when Emma is older and can actually sit through a service.

In 1878, Pastor Horner established three parish churches throughout the Crystal River Valley . All of the congregations held fund raisers to build a manse in Marble Springs . The Pastor held services in the Marble Edifice on the first and third Sundays of each month and travelled to Carbondale and Redstone for the other Sundays.
The church closed its doors in 1931. The Church:
