A Congregationalist? What's That?
One of the wonderful things about Vermont is the Town Meeting. It's a tradition that takes place once a year and reminds people that they are a valued part of the system of government. People get together in their town once a year in March to express their opinions on just about anything they want. Usually they stick to pressing local matters thoughlike the school budget debate or whether or not the town really does need a new Zamboni for the ice rink. Well, in the early days (and in some towns still today) these meetings usually took place in the town building that, more often than not, was also built as the church. Small towns just couldn't justify having seperate buildings for all the different beliefs so they would CONGREGATE in the same building with the other people from where they would also legislate the town's business. The building above is an example of what some of these original, beautiful old buildings look like that often took the blood or life of some of the men who built them in order to try to build hope for their community as a whole. This particular building is The Old Round Church in Richmond, VT. When I was a reporter for The Burlington Free Press , I wrote an article about the town voting in favor, at TOWN MEETING, of getting a new, period style organ for the church. I was told by the town's organist that the reason they made the church round was "to keep the devil out of the corners."

Congregationalist Beliefs The Chambers Dictionary defines Congregationalism as "a form of Church government where each Church is independent in the management of its own affairs." Whilst this is correct it does not display the motivation or spirit of Congregationalism. Taking their lead from the Acts of the Apostles, Congregationalists believe that everyone who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour is able to speak with Jesus through prayer. Each Church member has as much right to express his or her understanding of the Divine will as does his neighbour. There is no select Priesthood. The Minister and Deacons are just the leaders in a community of equals. The Church Meeting at which each member has the right to speak and vote is Sovereign in the affairs of the Church. Each member has both the privilege and the duty to represent Christ to other people. This doctrine, known as the

Congregationalist churches practice a congregationalist form of government, some of which trace their descent from the Congregational Church. The Congregational Church is a family of denominations of Christian Protestantism which arose from the Nonconformist religious movement in England, during the Puritan reformation. In Great Britain, the early congregationalists were called separatists or independents , and some congregationalists still call themselves "Independents" there. The Congregational Church was formed on a theory of union published by Robert Browne[?] , in 1592. They are the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock[?] , and the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony , which were organized in union by the Cambridge Platform[?] in
There are difficulties identifying such a specific beginning, because given its distinguishing commitment to the complete autonomy of the local congregation, congregationalism is more easily identified as a movement rather than a single denomination. The idea that each distinct congregation fully constitutes the visible Church can be traced to John Wyclif and the Lollard movement which followed after Wyclif was removed from teaching authority in the Roman Catholic Church . The early Congregationalists shared with Anabaptist theology the ideal of a pure church, which made adult conversion experience important for full membership in the church, unlike other

The Reformed Congregational Fellowship
" And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ;" (Eph. 4:11-13) The Reformed Congregational Fellowship is a group of pastors, belonging to several denominations and non-denominational churches who earnestly desire to see these words of Paul fulfilled by promoting a more biblically consistent ministry in today's churches. The Fellowship exists not as a new denomination, but as a help to pastors and teachers in their ministry to the flocks committed to their care by the Holy Spirit. For this reason, the Reformed Congregational Fellowship hosts an annual

Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins which he is pleased to term a tragedy and a comedy respectively are published together with lavish marginal illustrations. These pictures are the most praiseworthy feature of the volume, although they vary considerably. The author was not at his best when he wrote these stories. They are funny, and now and then very funny. But a coarse streak comes to the surface every little while and is disagreeable. The book is handsomely gotten up by the publishers and does them credit, but we cannot commend the stories which compose it to our readers very heartily.

INTRODUCTION
Freedom and religious liberty in the United States have their foundation in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and it's Bill of Rights, the values thereof being rooted in the Westminster Confession of Faith . In the final analyses, the only true source of freedom is faith in the One who said, "ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). The only true source of freedom, therefore, is the King of the Jews, Jesus Christ. The Early Church believed (as the Scriptures teach) in the Second Coming of Christ, when He will establish His Kingdom on Earth, with His throne in Jerusalem, from where He will rule in peace (with His saints) for a thousand years. Today, we call this belief "Premillennialism"; that is, the doctrine that Christ's Second Coming occurs before the thousand-year period of peace on earth.

The Tumblebug Habit
by Helen Campbell
The country child, probably, whether boy or girlthe country boy certainlyhas watched the methods of that singular insect he knows as tumblebug, and wondered at one moment how it knows so much, at another how it knows so little. In the one case, with infinite care and patience its eggs are inclosed in the little ball of dung which insures to them an even temperature and safe hatching, and this it rolls over and around all obstacles till a place of safe deposit is attained; in the other, any small, round object arouses equal but aimless zeal, and the tumblebug, compelled it would seem by irresistible impulse, spends its energy on a bit of wood or stone. This is fatuity, entertaining to the student of bug nature, who, if philosophical in his tendencies, naturally carries out the analogy into human life. Like the tumblebug, a multitude of human beings are engaged in rolling any round and rollable thing that comes in their way, and herin lies the reason of the enormous per cent of business failures recorded yearly in Bradstreet, and the larger mass of unrecorded failures in friendship, in love, in marriagein short, in all ill-considered, hastily-formed human ties and relations. This is the tragic side, yet with a gleam of comedy in its perverse manifestations, over which, we may be sure, the highter powers smile with much the same sense of gentle wonder and curiosity as fills the watching child. The tumblebug habit, however, does not confine itself to human relations. It enters no less into occupations and general interests, even into what we call cultivating our minds. And at this point, from the list of typical cases life affords, we have one, fatuous to an unbelievable degree, yet going on calmly and labeled "progress" by every one involved.
