Congregationalist Churches
Congregationalism really began on the Island with the appointment of Samuel Haining as Minister in 1808. They opened their first chapel in 1813 in Athol Street Douglas from whence the congregation, after what appears to be some form of split, moved to Finch Road in 1866 and also to another chapel in Circular Road; A small chapel was also built in Union Mills. Nightingale in his Lancashire Nonconformity , 1893, gives the most detailed history available concerning the Congregationalists. The Evangelical Magazine for November 1808 has the following: The Gazette 27-Feb-1817 quotes Miles Leah as new independent preacher at Castletown - this M. Leah would appear to have later joined the Primitive Methodists as he is reported to have ministered at their first camp meeting 3 June 1823 and to have opened a new chapel in Braddan in Aug 1824 (when described as Mr Leah from Ramsey). The Manx Advertiser 20 June 1822 reports the opening of an independent chapel at Peel - this would appear to have been in the one-time Barracks though it is possible they used the long cellars at the rear of Castle street properties.

The union by the Congregational and Christian churches seemed the most natural in the world, yet most of their life together from 1931 to 1957 concerned the General Council with matters surrounding church union, first its own and then with the Evangelical and ReformedChurch.
Nevertheless, the work of the church continued. In 1934, the General Council, "stirred by the deep need of humanity for justice, security, and spiritual freedom and growth, aware of the urgent demand within our churches for action to match our gospel, and clearly persuaded that the gospel of Jesus can be the solvent of social as of all other problems," voted to create the Council for Social Action. The Council reflected the focus of continuing Christian concern for service, international relations, citizenship, the rights of Japanese-Americans, rural life, and political, industrial and cultural relations. The General Council had acted to simplify andeconomize at a national level the prolific and redundant independent actions by churches and conferences, while maintaining the inherent liberties of the local churches.
Printed literature and communication continued to be essential. In 1930, the Christian Church's

We are Christians who deeply believe that our church must be self-governing. We church members are the church government, and collectively we determine how our church shall be organized, always conscious of our covenant with Christ. Our participation in councils or associations is always voluntary. The word "congregational" refers to the type of self-government within the church.
As Congregationalists, we believe that our relationship with God is one that is deeply personal and private. We do not adhere to any creed, and we come from a myriad of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We are free to pray and commune with God as we each see fit. No one tells us how to pray, or how to worship, however - our belief system is deeply rooted and built upon Biblical tradition and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Churches Cry Out: Revive Us Again!
by Richard Adair We think that new problems face the church. We see diminishing numbers, lack of working spirit among the congregation, failure to attract and keep new younger families and little enthusiasm about our churches. Is that what’s botherin’ you, Bub? Well, those problems are nothing new. Any student of church history can point out all the highs and lows in church popularity. It is not a question of people not going to church, but they just are not going to OUR church. We want to know why! CCD Chairman the Rev. Rob Joy and author the Rev. Richard Adair played devil’s advocates (complete with horns) at the NACCC 2000 Annual Meeting. Their mock opposition to church revitalization made the case for it.
I would like to address several issues which face most of our NACCC churches:
    • First , name identification. Second the three Fs: faith, fellowship, and FREEDOM. Third , the issue of change.
All three may be seen roadblocks to potential growth.

The Congregational Church is a family of denominations of Christian Protestantism which arose from the Nonconformist religious movement in England, during the Puritan reformation. In Great Britain, the early congregationalists were called separatists or independents , and some congregationalists still call themselves "Independents" there. The Congregational Church was formed on a theory of union published by Robert Brown , in 1592. There are difficulties identifying such a specific beginning, because given its distinguishing commitment to the complete autonomy of the local congregation, congregationalism is more easily identified as a movement rather than a single denomination. The idea that each distinct congregation fully constitutes the visible Church can be traced to John Wyclif and the Lollard movement which followed after Wyclif was removed from teaching authority in the Roman Catholic Church . The early Congregationalists shared with Anabaptist theology the ideal of a pure church, which made adult conversion experience important for full membership in the church, unlike other

The Anabaptist movement, Baptists , and the Congregationalist churches are organized according to it. In Christianity , it is distinguished from Presbyterian government, and Episcopalian government. Congregationalism is not limited only to the organization of Christian congregations. Most of the principles of congregationalism have been inherited by the Unitarian Universalist Association , by direct historical descent from the Congregational Church. The basics of congregationalism in Christianity
Congregationalism is the theory that every local church is a full realization in miniature, of the entire Church of Jesus Christ; and, the Church while on earth, besides the local Church, can only be invisible and ideal. While other theories may insist on the truth of the first precept, the second of congregationalism gives the entire theory a unique character among plans of church government. There is no other reference than the local congregation, for the "visible church" in congregationalism. And yet, the connection of all Christians is also asserted, albeit in a way that can't be clearly or consistently described. This first, foundational principle by which congregationalism is guided, results in the extreme limitation of authority, confining it to operate with the consent of a single gathering of believers.

Congregationalists are members of the present-day United Church of Christ, which has approximately 2,000,000 members. The original Pilgrim fathers who landed at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620 were Congregationalists. The emphasis is on the congregation and the autonomous local church. The church recognizes the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion and the Holy Trinity, but not the virgin birth of Jesus Christ or a strictly defined heaven and hell. Congregationalists view the Bible as a work for inspiration and interpretation, not to be taken literally. American President Calvin Coolidge was a Congregationalist.

Adonirum Judson was born in 1788, the son of a devout Congregationalist minister. From early in his life he excelled in everything he touched. So excellent was young Judson's scholarship that he was enrolled at Rhode Island Christian College at the age of 16. Unlike many other missionaries, Adnorium did not have an early call from God or love for Him. In fact, Judson fell in with a number of atheists, chief of which was James Eames who became his dear friend. By the age of 20, the minister's son had completely denounced Christ and his upbringing. "Like the prodigal son he left home in quest of an exciting life. He wanted to escape parental restraints." The story of Adonirum Judson's conversion has been told so many times that it really does not need to be documented.
