Church of the Brethren
There were several Old Order Brethren congregations in Somerset County. Many people incorrectly refer to this sect of the Anabaptists as "DUNKARD". This term was applied to the members of the Church of the Brethren in the late 19th century and early 20th. The word "Dunker" was acutally a anglicized corruption of the German word, "Tunker," which means "dipper" or immerserer referring to the mode of baptism practiced by this group. The term is still used today by two minor conservative orders, Old Order Dunkards and the Dunkard Brethren. The mode of baptism practiced by this group was adopted during this groups founding in Pennsylvania in the 1770's. In Brothers Valley Township It is believed that the first religious group to arrive in Somerset County were the German Baptists or "Die Bruder's Leute". They are the one's who named "Brueder Thal" or Brothers Valley and were said to have been organized in the county as early as 1763. In Stony Creek Township The Stony Creek congregation called, Glade Church, first records its founding in 1763 under the supervision of George William MARTIN. In 1770, a list of 17 members is recorded by the Rev. Martin and his wife.

Statement on Jerusalem Passed by General Board 12 March 1996 The Christian community throughout the world affirms its spiritual and historical roots in Jerusalem. Sacred to Jews, Muslims, and Christians, Jerusalem is also a disputed city and the symbolic center of much of the conflict in the Middle East. The status of Jerusalem will be of particular importance over the next several months because the Israelis and the Palestinians have agreed that the "final status" of Jerusalem will be determined between the parties during talks scheduled to begin in May 1996. As these talks begin, we recognize that the stakes are extremely high, as both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples claim Jerusalem as their capital. The Church of the Brethren joins with Muslims, Jews, and Christians at home and in the Middle East to support principles of justice, religious liberty and peaceful resolution of the questions of Jerusalem. For many years the Church of the Brethren has appealed for the termination of violence and counter-violence by all parties in the Middle East, opposed the Israeli acquisition of land by force, and has stressed the importance of international efforts to assure the legitimate rights of self-determination for the Palestinian people as well as the legitimate security interests of Israel. Specifically, in relation to the city of Jerusalem, we also affirm the following principles.

Climate Change and Christian Witness
Church of the Brethren Statement on Global Climate Change The threat to creation by global warming/climate change is a cause for concern for everyone on the planet, but for Christians the issue is more than a matter of self preservation; it is a matter of faithfulness. Throughout its history, the Church of the Brethren has been concerned with good stewardship of God's creation. We are increasingly aware of the interrelatedness of all life. We acknowledge that energy use is linked to the ecological crisis facing the Earth, the health consequences for us and future generations, and spiritual well-being in relation to other species and our Creator. Climate change is an issue of justice. The industrialized nations, representing less than 20 percent of the world's population, are responsible for 75 to 80 percent of the annual greenhouse gas emissions. Yet those who live in poor and developing countries will be most seriously affected by global warming. A major challenge facing humankind is an equitable standard of living for this and future generations: adequate food, water, energy, safe shelter and a healthy environment. Human-induced climate change, along with land degradation, loss of biological diversity, and stratospheric ozone depletion, threatens our ability to meet these basic human needs.

(INTRODUCTION TO THE church of the brethren). PEOPLE WHO CARE. People haveexperienced that warmth and kinship in the church of the brethren.
http://home.indy.net/~nviewcob/NorthviewBrochureIntroCOB.htm
(INTRODUCTION TO THE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN) PEOPLE WHO CARE Brethren are young and old, black and white, men and women, from cities and rural areas. Brethren are a community of faith. They know their church as more than an institution or building. They know it as family and friends. "Brethren" is in fact a New Testament word that describes the kinship and warmth of Jesus’ early followers. People have experienced that warmth and kinship in the Church of the Brethren. We invite you to get to know the people called Brethren. We want to share our faith and make a place in our community of believers for you. Will you join us this Sunday in worship? A PEOPLE FORMED The story of the Brethren began in Germany almost three hundred years ago. A small group of men and women met for Bible study and prayer in homes, seeking alternatives to the shallow Christianity they observed about them. This group was part of a larger movement that sought to reform the existing Protestant churches. Restless with dead formalism, these first Brethren wanted to be a people shaped by a personal faith in Christ and by life-giving words of Scripture. They wanted to live lives of discipleship and be of service to their neighbor. Their study led them to be baptized by immersion in a river near their homes. In this act they looked to the previous example of 16th century reformers. The new-found faith of the Brethren created a stir among religious and civic leaders because at that time adult baptism was illegal. But their zeal and warm fellowship attracted many who were searching for a deeper, more meaningful faith.
