Our mission:
Continuing the work of Jesus. Peacefully. Simply. Together.
Though the Brethren as a group have existed for nearly three hundred years, we subscribe to no formal "creed" or set of rules. We simply try to do what Jesus did. Jesus brought a message of life, love, and hope. But he offered much more than inspiring words: He understood that people's spiritual needs also include day-to-day human ones - food, health, rest, comfort, friendship, and unconditional acceptance. "I am the way," he told his followers. He showed them how to trust, how to care, and how to help.
Steadily, lovingly, even radically, Jesus went about saving the world - by serving its people. Because we believe his message, we seek to do the same.

Church of the Brethren STATEMENTS ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Annual Conference, 1959. We commend current efforts to abolish capital punishment and call upon Brethren everywhere to use their influence and their witness against it. Annual Conference, 1975. (The following statement is part of a much longer paper on "Criminaljustice." It is included in a section of recommendations entitled "Reforming the System.") " . . .Brethren are encouraged to work for the following changes: that the use of capital punishment be abolished." General Board, 1979. The Church of the Brethren General Board views with deep concern and alarm the resumption of the use of capital punishment. We affirm the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference Statements of 1957, 1959, and 1975 which uphold the sanctity of human life and personality, oppose the use of capital punishment, and encourage Brethren to work for the abolition of the death penalty. We encourage Brethren to express their opposition to capital punishment, especially to governors and state legislators in states where capital punishment has been established or is being considered. We deplore the taking of human life, whether by the hand of an individual or through the working of a judicial system. We pray, in the spirit of Jesus Christ who calls us to share his ministry of reconciliation, that our society will turn away from the use of capital punishment.

Church of the Brethren resettlement staff members, Alex Kirculescu and Stan Noffsinger, serve newly arriving refugees at the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Maryland. The Church of the Brethren and its Emergency Response/Service Ministry has been involved with refugee ministries since World War II and has worked in partnership with Church World Service for many years. Photo: CWS/New Windsor The Church of the Brethren, a historic peace church, has long been involved in the ministry of refugee resettlement. It began by providing assistance to people left homeless by the devastation of World War II. In 1949, congressional action opened the way for large numbers of refugees to enter the United States. That same year the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference called on the churches to help resettle 1,000 families displaced by the war. Within a year, Church of the Brethren congregations had resettled 500 families and the goal of 1,000 was reached the following year. Since that time, the Church of the Brethren has been involved in the resettlement of refugees fleeing from brutal and oppressive conditions resulting from war and civil strife. Refugees have come from all over the world, representing the spectrum of racial, social, ethnic and religious diversity. Working closely with CWS, the Church of the Brethren has resettled refugees in congregations throughout the U.S.

Health Care in the US
[From Church of the Brethren Annual Conference Statement on Health Care in the United States (1989)
and Church of the Brethren General Board Resolution on Health Care in the United States (1992)] Throughout the Scriptures, God calls for justice and fairness for all people. Therefore, it seems particularly clear that in the richest nation on earth, God expects access to adequate health care to be a basic right for all citizens, regardless of gender, race or financial status. While good health cannot be assured to everyone, good health care can and should be guaranteed. Our Judeo-Christian heritage has taught us that God’s holy purpose includes everyone, that every person is of worth. As God’s people, we are to be concerned for the health of all people and to nurture health for one another. In the past, the church has accepted the responsibility of caring for others; today the church is called to a new level of involvement. As God’s people on earth, the church is called to work for high quality, comprehensive health care for all. AFFIRMATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • We believe that as tangible evidence of the covenantal nature of our Christian faith, all persons should receive adequate health care as a basic human right and as a reflection of personal dignity;
