THE BRISTOLVILLE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN
(click here for music) Jesus said . . . "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, but by Me."
(John 14:6)
Greetings from the Bristolville Church of the Brethren, located in northeast Ohio 30 miles north of Youngstown!
With roots in the Anabaptist and Pietist movements, we are part of a 140,000-member Protestant denomination which traces its roots to Germany and the year 1708. Serious believers were dissatisfied with the "politically correct" churches of the day, which put an emphasis on man-made standards rather than the plain and pure Word of God. Believers often met informally to pray and study Scripture. It was in 1708 that Alexander Mack and seven other individuals reached the conviction that as followers of Christ, they should be baptized as an outward testimony of their inward commitment. Since infant baptism was routinely practiced in the state-approved churches, to be rebaptized as an adult was considered a crime against the state. As a result, many believers suffered persecution, and even martyrdom. As a result of the persecution, believers who made up the Brethren movementknown at that time as "New Baptists," and later German Baptist Brethrenbegan migrating to America. The name "Church of the Brethren" was not used until 1908. Four other denominations trace their heritage to the same source as the Church of the Brethrenthe Old Order Brethren, Ashland Brethren, Dunkard Brethren, and Grace Brethren.

Origins of the Church of the Brethren and Other Brethren Groups by Lois C. Byrem, Strasburg, Pennsylvania Groups which stem from the Schwarzenau Brethren, 1708 Many religious groups have the term "brethren" as part of their names. Most are not related to the events that took place in Schwarzenau (present day Germany), in 1708, and to the group called "the Schwarzenau Brethren." According to The Brethren Encyclopedia, there have been more than 35 groups which are identified as having evolved from the Schwarzenau Brethren. It is important to note that those that are listed below, all consider themselves to be the true heirs of the Schwarzenau Brethren. The Church of the Brethren (earlier called Fraternity of German Baptists, until 1907 they were known as the German Baptist Brethren). Membership about 155,000. Beginning in Pennsylvania in 1723. Considered "conservative" in the 1880s. It has a seminary and six colleges. Headquarters - Elgin, Illinois. Ephrata Community (German Seventh Day Baptists). Led by Conrad Beissel, it resulted in the first schism among the Brethren in 1728. In 1732, Beissel led his followers to the place where the Ephrata Cloister now stands. Membership about 100. The Church of the Brethren
This page is still under construction
What is the Brethren Church?
The Brethren Church began in Schwarzenau, Germany in 1708 primarily out of a desire for religious freedom and in reaction to the government controlled churches of the day. By the mid 1700's the Brethren Church had migrated to America in pursuit of that same religious freedom. The heritage of the Brethren church would be similar to that of other "Anabaptist" denominations such as the Mennonite, German Baptist Brethren, Church of the Brethren and Grace Brethren. The Brethren maintain that the entire Bible (Old Testament and New Testament) is the inspired Word of God and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins. We also believe that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and that He has ascended into heaven where He intercedes on our behalf. Having ascended into heaven, Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to live in the hearts of His people as our comforter, counselor and friend. We believe that those who have acknowledged Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior will have the assurance of a home in heaven with Christ for all eternity. The Brethren Church seeks to live out their faith in Christ on a daily basis. Obedience to Christ is demonstrated through a commitment to a daily relationship with God and involvement in the ministries of the church. We believe that God empowers His people to this obedient service through the gifts of His Holy Spirit. Each person who believes in Christ is equipped by God to perform some meaningful function within the context of the Body of Christ.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE DEDICATION
The Smith Mountain Lake Community Church, a new church start of the Church of the Brethren, dedicated their newly purchased five-acre site March 19. Located seven miles south of Burnt Chimney, Va., in the Roanoke area, this property was secured through a partnership of the Community Church and the congregations of the Virlina District.
Pastor Jerry Naff spoke on the importance of giving thanks to God for this expression of vision, faith and hope, and Virlina district executive David K. Shumate led those assembled in a dedicatory prayer. The service concluded with a ground-breaking service followed by remarks by John Hamilton, trustee of the Hamilton Trust from which the property was purchased. Members of the Smith Mountain Lake Building Committee, chaired by Clinton Wade, expressed the hope that they will be in their new building by November. Completion of the building will require a $230,000 indebtedness. The fellowship reports having received pledges totaling $103,000 toward this goal. The Smith Mountain Lake Community Church began in 1995, located in a resort community. Judy Mills Reimer, current executive director of the General Board, was the founding pastor. Top: A sign announces the coming new church building; Middle: Pastor Jerry Naff, Cami Jones and Rick Taylor lead in the service. Bottom: A group attending the service gathers at the site around an original log cabin on the property which was last used as a store.

40. West Richmond Church Of The Brethren - About The Church
About the church of the brethren. Brethren have a long tradition of gatheringaround the Word . The Ordinances of the church of the brethren. Baptism.
http://www.globalweb.net/wrcob/cob.htm
About the Church of the Brethren Brethren have a long tradition of "gathering around the Word". Taking the New Testament as our guide, we discuss what Jesus didand why. Then we try to pattern our own lives after his. "Where two or three are gathered together in my name," Jesus promised, "there am I in the midst of them." Through the practices describe below, Brethren come togetheras small groups or larger onesin loving imitation of Jesus' actions. At these times, we're especially aware of God's presence. We call these practices our ordinances, because we think of them as instructions from God.
The Ordinances of the Church of the Brethren Baptism Love Feast/Communion Feetwashing Anointing
Baptism
Before making any serious commitmentto marry, to accept a responsible office, to practice healthier livinga person considers the meaning and consequences of that choice. Often, he or she undergoes a public ceremony to acknowledge this momentous personal decision. For Brethren, the ordinance of "believers' baptism" marks just such a deliberate, thoughtful commitment. Choosing to follow the example of Jesus begins with repenting, or humbly re-examining one's relationship with God. Jesus himself showed us the way: he asked to be baptized by John, and he instructed his disciples to baptize others who wanted to be symbolically "reborn," through God's grace, into a new life of mature belief and service.
