A Social Contract for Biotechnology:
Shared Visions for Risky Technologies?
Dr Donald M. Bruce

[Paper presented at Third Congress of the European Society for Agriculture and Food Ethics, Florence, 3-5 October 2001] Introduction Future technological developments concerning food, agriculture and the environment face a gulf of social legitimation from a skeptical public and media, in the wake of the crises of BSE, GM food, and foot and mouth disease in the UK. There is distrust of the bioindustry, the regulatory system and the assurances of Government. This paper examines agricultural biotechnology in terms of a social contract, assessing the conditions which would be necessary to re-establish a measure of public trust against a climate of suspicion. A vital factor is how far new shared visions can be found for future developments in this field. Mismatched Visions about Biotechnology A vision is something which motivates us, rooted in certain values which we hold. Prevailing attitudes within the scientific community, the bioindustry, government and regulatory agencies continue to hold a positive vision of biotechnology. These are expressed in terms like discovery, innovation, enhancement, efficiency, sustainability, prosperity, growth and competitivity. Developments should be guided by suitable systems of safety and regulation, but should not be held back by them. Underlying all, and largely taken for granted, is an Enlightenment vision of rational human progress through technology.

CHURCH of SCOTLAND
LAGGAN
Home Where to Stay What to do What's on ... Monarch of the Glen
The present Parish Church in Laggan was built in 1785 and the Duke of Gordon acted as patron. The Minister at the time was Rev. James Grant and the manse was the house at Gaskbeg Farm and he was allowed £20 in lieu of a manse and his stipend was £70. It was however his wife Mrs Anne Grant who is celebrated and remembered for her writings especially "Letters from the Mountains". Her comments reveal the nature of life in the Highlands at the end of the eighteenth century. In the 1800's there was a fire in the church and the interior was rebuilt as it is today. The pine was taken from local forests and the eight pine pillars that hold up the roof are reputed to be unique. The high pulpit and Precentors pulpit below are very distinctive. This put the minister on the same level as the local Lairds, whose pews were upstairs In the gallery, Cluny Macphersons facing the pulpit and Glentruim on the left hand side. It is interesting to note the width of the seats, how they diminish towards the back, where it was standing room only for the coachmen. The stained glass window was also put in at this time. A minister of note was the Rev. Neil Ross who was the minister from 1923 until his death in 1943. Dr Ross was a famous Gaelic and Celtic scholar and was created a C.B.E. in 1938 The organ was donated by Andrew Carnegie in 1911, The church is very active today, its members taking part in all facets of community life.

home other information new college and the church of scotland New College and the Church of Scotland 'New College' is not only the name of the building in which Edinburgh University's School of Divinity has its home, and not only a widely used short-hand for the whole School of Divinity and its work. 'New College', in Church of Scotland parlance, is also one of three Colleges of the Church (along with Trinity College, Glasgow, and Christ's College, Aberdeen) in which its candidates for the ministry study theology as part of their formation as ministers. (Candidates may study also in St Mary's College, St Andrews, but the legal situation there is different.) As in the sister colleges, the Principal of New College is a minister of the Church of Scotland, and is appointed by the General Assembly of the Church from the senior academic staff of the School. The Principal, with the College Senate, is responsible to the Church for overseeing the academic part of the training of its candidates. Assisted by the New College Financial Board, the Principal and Senate are also responsible for investments held by the College. Where necessary, the Principal seeks to interpret the Church to the University and the University to the Church. The Senate of New College is composed of the Professors of the School of Divinity (together with the Head of School, if not a professor). Graeme Auld, Professor of Hebrew Bible, was inducted as Principal in October 2002.

THE FREE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND
In Glen Urquhart most of the community supported the Disruption and erected the church and the manse in 1847. In 1900 the minister and most of the congregation joined the Union. However, all the elders and many of the congregation had returned to the Free Church by 1903. The church was destroyed by fire in 1956 and rebuilt shortly after on a much smaller scale. Glen Urquhart: Church located at Oakbank, Milton, 1 mile west of Drumnadrochit on A831 Cannich Road.
The above photo of the Church before the fire was graciously sent to me by Rev. Ian Allan, author of "West the Glen".
Story of The Free Church of Scotland (in brief)by Rev. Ian Allen
This church was built in 1844 by the people of the Glen. The story behind the building of the church is common to many Highland communities of the time, when the "Disruption" took place. It was a most heart-warming story. Briefly at the centre of the story is a spiritual movement that was taking place throughout Scotland. This movement meant that people became very aware that the men in the pulpit and ruling over them in spiritual matters (their ministers) ought to be men who believed in, and preached from, the Bible. However the predominant church in Scotland was the Church of Scotland, and in many places the men who occupied the pulpit were not at all interested in the specifics of Bible teaching. Indeed their life styles were far from commending Bible teaching.

The Hill and Adamson partnership, based at Rock House, produced calotype photos of many of the dissenting ministers. DO Hill used these photos to create his painting of The Disruption , featuring 457 people associated with the disruption, at the First General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland. This painting measures 12ft x 4ft 8ins. It took Hill 23 years to paint. The painting may, in fact, have been completed by his wife. The painting was purchased by The Free Church of Scotland in 1866, and now hangs in the Free Presbytery Hall of Church of Scotland, 15 North Bank Street, Edinburgh 1 Let the cursor hover over any of the coloured buttons above for an explanation.
