Welcome to the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland is a direct descendant of the historic Church of Scotland. When doctrinal liberalism and religious doubt overcame the Presbyterian churches in the 19th century, we took up a separate position in 1893 to preserve the Church of Scotland of the Reformation, and to maintain Reformed doctrine, worship and practice. We have established a number of congregations in other countries and we have an extensive mission in Zimbabwe.

by Tim McCabe
By the providence of God, the Free Church of Scotland, as the predominant form of Presbyterian Christianity in mid-nineteenth century Canada, had a profound impact on Toronto and what became Ontario. But in 1875 the four branches of Presbyterianism in Canada joined together. Thereafter, although the Free Church heritage continued to manifest itself, the Free Church as a distinct body ceased in Canada. Mr. MacKenzie served diligently through the 1920s and well into the 1930s. From time to time, ministers and students of the Free Church came to Toronto (as well as to nascent congregations in Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Vancouver and Detroit), at the invitation of our grateful predecessors in this place, to conduct services and otherwise provide encouragement. Throughout this period, the Colonial Committee of the Free Church kept a watchful and sympathetic eye and assisted as it was able.

The seriousness with which these men and women took their responsibilities directed by passages like Deut. 12:32 and chapter 21.1 of the Westminster Confession is clearly shown by the terms of the trust under which the trustees took the property (and under which our trustees today continue to hold our property). For example, the sixth condition of the trust is:

Greetings from The Thai-Burma border
As you can read in the latest Fishwrapper we have been settling in to the new and challenging work with the Karen Christians of the 16th Presbytery of the Church of Christ in Thailand. We are finding the Karen to be wonderful neighbors and hosts. Despite all the challenges the people face they are warm and outgoing. Always seeing the positive and always hoping for the best. The Karen people and the Church which is called to serve them are under constant political and cultural pressure. Have a look at some of the linked websites to the left to findout some of the horrific details of the oppression faced by the Karen living in Burma. Recent evictions of this indigeneous people from forest homelands and the fact that many are seen as 2nd or 3rd rate citizens (eg. given only hilltribe status and restricted as to rights of movement) highlights the difficult situation they face in Thailand as well. Klity, where one of the Presbytery's new believers' groups is located has suffered from the exploitative practice of a lead mine.

It is our belief, as taught in the Bible, that as men and women, we can only be truly happy and content when we are in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Therefore, one of the main reasons for our existence as a church is that, humbly, we might share this truth with others, offering to people the reality and thrill of God's blessing upon their lives. • Mr. Douglass said he had come hither this evening in the spirit of candour to discuss the subject, and he wished to be distinctly understood that in rising to call their attention to the connection of the Free Church of Scotland with the Churches in America, he was not rising to speak against the Free Church. He was not here to offer a single word as to the right or the wrong of the Free Church of Scotland, or of its organization. He was not here to tell whether Drs. Chalmers, Candlish, and Cunningham, or any of the leaders of the Free Church did right or wrong in coming out and establishing that church.
  • He then said he could not better begin his speech than by reading a portion of the first chapter of Isaiah. Mr. Douglass here read from the fourth to the twentieth verses

Church of Scotland split, 1843 At its General Assembly in Edinburgh in 1843, the Church of Scotland split when nearly 200 ministers marched out to gather in another hall and form the Free Church of Scotland. The new church included more than one third of all former Church of Scotland ministers. Guided by Thomas Chalmers as their first moderator, within two years the Free Church had built 500 new churches, as well as 712 schools by 1851. Many Scots believed the disruption to have been the most significant event of the nineteenth century, and its effects were felt in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. But a summary of village and parish history is as follows ....... A very brief history of the village is that from the early 1700s what is now know as the village of Invergowrie existed as four ancient farm hamlets, some evidence of which, still remains. The coming of the railway and many of the houses built from around 1880, together with the completion of the village school around that time, meant that the village started to take on the character it has today. There are 4 church buildings in the area of the village of Invergowrie.

Church of Scotland to address demon possession
The Church of Scotland is to recognise that exorcisms can be effective in delivering people from demonic possession.
The Kirk will stop short of creating an official rite of exorcism, or a set liturgy, however, believing that would “do more harm than good and create unwarranted publicity and demand” reports the Times.
Instead, ministers should use “prayer, blessing and the ministry of healing”.
The Church of Scotland was warned last year by mental health campaigners that a group set up to help people who believe they are possessed by demons could increase the stigma associated with psychiatric illness.
Richard Norris from the Scottish Association of Mental Health claimed that talking about demon possession conjured up "disturbing" and "medieval" images about mental health which would not be welcome to many.

    Church closure plans progress
Plans are progressing to close Newbigging Church at the end of March.
The congregational board of the linked charge at Monikie and Newbigging has agreed the closure plan. However. the church will have to win approval from Dundee Presbytery before it can cease using the Newbigging kirk.
The closure has been on the cards for four years, since a ballot of the congregation opted to retain the kirk in Kirkton Monikie , explained parish minister the Rev. Gordon Mackenzie.
With around two miles between the churches, the decision is unlikely to win universal favour and, in the intervening years since the original vote, there has been much discussion and debate about the proposal.

Church of Scotland Supports Demon Possession
When people start acting out of character, should we: talk to a doctor, talk to a psychologist, or hire an exorcist? Most people today would probably consider the first or second and regard the third as a relic of the Middle Ages - but not so according to the Church of Scotland. They are going to officially recognize that demon possessions are real situations that can be helped via exorcisms. Ekklesia explains: The Church of Scotland was warned last year by mental health campaigners that a group set up to help people who believe they are possessed by demons could increase the stigma associated with psychiatric illness. Richard Norris from the Scottish Association of Mental Health claimed that talking about demon possession conjured up "disturbing" and "medieval" images about mental health which would not be welcome to many. The Church surveyed more than 1,000 parish ministers and hospital, mental health and prison chaplains. Nine out of ten prison chaplains had been approached for help by someone believing themselves to be possessed, compared with seven out of ten mental health chaplains and six out of ten parish ministers. The group found that more than two thirds of Church of Scotland ministers “believe supernatural forces of evil exist today”.
