Established in 1560, the Church of Scotland was the only ecclesiastical body established by law in Scotland. The General Assembly was Scotland's only national legislative assembly. It met every May and the moderator, who presided over the General Assembly, was elected annually by the delegates.
By 1901 the membership of the Church of Scotland had reached 662,000. Its leading competitors included the Free Church of Scotland (288,000) the United Presbyterian Church (194,000) and the Scottish Episcopal Church (47,000). There were also Baptists and Methodists and a growing number of Roman Catholics , composed mainly of Irish immigrants, settling in industrial centres such as Glasgow spartacus@pavilion.co.uk

The minister of the church is Ian Aitken who along with his wife Sarah, their children Zion and Hannah and a small core team, have been working in the community since the end of 1999.
The community they are reaching out to includes the Stockethill, Cairncry and Cornhill areas near to the centre of Aberdeen. There are over 4000 people living within the area served by the church.
The purpose of the church is to be a community where God is given his proper place, people are reconciled to God and each other, disciples are called and matured and the gospel is preached and lived
"Our desire is to see people living in and beyond the Stockethill area come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and saviour and so be reconciled to God the Father. We want to help them discover and live the life in all its fullness that Jesus promises. We want to help disciple them to a depth of commitment from which they can minister effectively in the name of Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Through it all we want to give God his proper place in our lives, in our church and in our community."

From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
The Church of Scotland is the national (established) church in Scotland . (It does not regard itself as a ' state church ', having fought for centuries to prevent government interference in its affairs.) It is commonly known as the Kirk . The Church of Scotland is Presbyterian , not Episcopalian , and should not be confused with the Church of England , the Church of Ireland nor the much smaller Scottish Episcopal Church , all of which are part of the Anglican Communion . Both the Church of Scotland and the Scottish Episcopal Church are Churches of the Reformation . The latter is a Sister Church, not a daughter church of the Church of England. The Kirk was founded during the Reformation by John Knox . He based its doctrines and government on the Presbyterian principles of John Calvin which he had been exposed to while living in Switzerland . In , the Scottish Parliament adopted Presbyterianism as the state religion and set up the Kirk structure to implement it. However while Parliament was supportive of presbyterianism, the King was not. Over the next hundred years bishops were imposed on the Kirk from time to time. In a National Covenant was signed by large numbers of Scots in protest at this. These people, the

From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
In one sense the Free Church of Scotland dated its existence from the Disruption of 1843, in another it claimed to be the rightful representative of the National Church of Scotland as it was reformed in . In the ecclesiastical history of Scotland the Free Churchman sees three great reforming periods. In his view these deserve to be called reforming on many accounts, but most especially because in them the independence of the church, her inherent scriptural right to exercise a spiritual jurisdiction in which she is responsible to her Divine Head alone, was both earnestly asserted and practically maintained. The first reformation extended from 1560, when the church freely held her first General Assembly, and of her own authority acted on the First Book of Discipline, to 1592, when her Presbyterian order was finally and fully ratified by the parliament. The second period began in 1638, when, after 20 years of suspended animation, the Assembly once more shook off Episcopacy, and terminated in 1649, when the parliament of Scotland confirmed the church in her liberties in a larger and ampler sense than before. The third period began in I834, when the Assembly made use of what the church believed to be her rights in passing the Veto and Chapel Acts. It culminated in the Disruption of The fact that the Church, as led first by

These people the Covenanters were persecuted as a result. In , as part of the Glorious Revolution , the Revolution settlement put a stop to this and finally guaranteed the Reformed, Established, Presbyterian nature of the Kirk. However it did not end government interference with the church, particularly concerning the appointment of ministers. As a result there was a lot of controversy within the Kirk, starting with the Secession of over "a congregation's right to select its own ministers", and culminating in the Disruption of

Dunnichen, Letham and Kirkden Church To the glory of God We are a Church of Scotland congregation and our churches are located amidst the stunning beauty of God's creation in the Angus heartland on the north east coast of Scotland. Our church is a "linked charge"; over the course of many years three congregations have combined to be served by one minister. Dunnichen and Letham churches are used for worship on a weekly basis and whilst only a small part of Kirkden church remains today, an outdoor service is still held on the site annually. We want to make these pages more than just an expression of Christian belief in a small Scottish community. Our district is steeped in history - events have taken place around here that have shaped the course of Scottish history. We hope that the historical elements in these pages will prove to be a useful resource to all and help to set our people and our beliefs in to context, both contemporary and historical. There can be no doubt at all that much of the human race desires and seeks a spiritual element to its existence. This desire manifests itself in many ways and, whether through established religions or through New Age philosophies many seek to find meaning in their lives and to make sense of the confusing and often brutal world around them. Only through love, knowledge and understanding can the Human Race be reconciled with itself; only through love, knowledge and understanding can a just and inclusive society be created. These pages are dedicated to that cause.

Following the union of the Crowns of Scotland and England in 1603 CE , attempts were made to forcibly conform the Church of Scotland to the Church of England (Anglican) model. The resultant conflict ended in 1690 with the establishment of the Church of Scotland as a Presbyterian denomination. As of 2000-JAN, a law in Great Britain prohibits schools from teaching about homosexuality. It is called " Clause 28 ", and is a part of the Local Government Act (1986). There are indications that England and Wales are planning to repeal the law. However, some business people and the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland are attempting to keep the ban in place. The Church of Scotland 's education committee supports the repeal of Clause 28. They conclude that the school curriculum should: " Cover the whole range of orientation sensitively through sex education aimed at developing respect for others; self respect and understanding, but always in consultation with parents. "
