(Christian Science) I GROUP PROFILE 1. Name:
The Church of Christ, Scientist; Christian Science 2. Founder: Mary Baker Eddy 3. Dates of Birth and Death: July 16, 1821 - December 3, 1910 4. Birthplace: Bow, New Hampshire 5. Year Founded: The Church of Christ, Scientist was founded in 1879. Eddy's book , Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , first appeared in 1875. 6. Brief History: The Church of Christ, Scientist, was designed to "reinstate primitive Christianity," to reduce and relieve illness and to heal sin, as the early Christians did. The Church was founded by Mary Baker Eddy. Mary Morse Baker was raised in a strict, deeply religious New England Congregationalist home, from which she derived her lifelong interest in Christianity and the Bible. She had been plagued with ill health, as well as several tragedies, through her childhood and into adult years. Her revered and deeply religious mother, her favorite brother, and her husband all died in short succession, and she suffered through a forced separation from her son because of her recurring ill health. She remarried in 1853 to Dr. Daniel Patterson, an itinerant dentist, in an unsuccessful attempt to gain control of her son who had been placed in another home by her family in the belief that she was physically incapable of caring for him. This marriage eventually ended in divorce. In 1877 she would marry Asa Gilbert Eddy, one of the early students of Christian Science, and she would eventually adopt the name by which she is most commonly remembered: Mary Baker Eddy.

Church of Christ, Scientist
General Information Christian Science is a religion emphasizing divine healing as practiced by Jesus Christ; its tenets were formulated by Mary Baker Eddy. In 1879, Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, with its headquarters in Boston. Today it has about 3,000 branch churches, societies, and college organizations in more than 50 countries. While the branches are democratic in government, they all conform to the rules laid down in the Manual of The Mother Church (1895) by Eddy. Sunday services consist mainly of readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1906), the textbook of Christian Science written by Mary Baker Eddy. Wednesday meetings include testimonies of healing from the congregation. The church has no ordained clergy. Readers, both men and women, are elected from the membership to conduct the services. Practitioners, also both men and women, devote full time to the work of spiritual healing. Christian Science teaches that God and his spiritual creation are the only realities. God is regarded as infinite Life, Truth, Spirit, Mind, and Principle. The material world, with all its suffering, strife, and death, is considered to be a misconception or distorted view of the divine universe. Christian Science claims to prove through the healing of disease and other difficulties that the understanding of God and his spiritual creation is as effective now as it was in Jesus' time. Its adherents therefore rely on divine law in times of sickness instead of resorting to medical and other material means. The right of Christian Science parents to withhold medical treatment from their children has been challenged in court.

An e-mail that Mr. Tinning sent to the Federal Trade Commission last month bounced back after it was blocked by the agency's e-mail filters, according to CNET.com, an online technology information source. Apparently, the FTC had "blacklisted" Tinning's Internet service provider, SBC Pacific Bell, because it was known to have hosted several customers who send spam, or unsolicited commercial messages. According to CNET, the FTC is the first federal agency to use blacklists, which generally include Internet service providers or specific e-mail addresses from which the user of the list does not want to receive e-mail.

Principia is an independent educational institution staffed by Christian Scientists, serving Christian Scientists from infants through adults. Principia accepts no government funding and is not an activity of the Christian Science Church.
  • In the fall of 1897 Mary Kimball Morgan, a Christian Scientist, began home-schooling her two sons because she believed she could give them a fuller education than what was being offered in the St. Louis public schools.
The basis for Mrs. Morgan's educational philosophy came from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
As other Christian Science parents discovered the education the Morgan boys were receiving at home, many asked to enroll their children. The name "Principia" was chosen in 1898; the first high school graduation was in 1906; the first junior-college graduation in 1917; and the first college graduation in 1934.
    Principia's primary purpose
Principia strives to train its students "to think clearly, vigorously, fearlessly, tolerantly, unselfishly." Teaching at Principia also "emphasizes the point of view that education carries with it the obligation to use technical skills and intellectual attainments for the betterment of humanity." And Principia "takes the position that education in its fullest sense cannot be confined to academic subjects but includes the building of character" (from

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IN UTAH The Church of Christ, Scientist, founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy "to reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing," has been in Utah for over a century. Its state history began in July 1891 when Mrs. Eddy sent one of her followers, Mrs. N. A. Bagley of Chicago, to Salt Lake City to organize a branch church. This led to the formation of the first Utah congregation, the present First Church of Christ, Scientist, Salt Lake City, incorporated on 27 August 1891. Mrs. Bagley returned to Chicago after the church was started. The small group initially met at various sites, including members' homes, the Odd Fellows Hall, and the Jewish synagogue. In 1897 the thirty-three local members voted to build their own church, located at 352 East 300 South. The Richardsonian Romanesque structure was planned by architect Walter E. Ware, who also designed the First Presbyterian Church, St. Mark's Hospital, the Old Masonic Temple, and many other structures in Salt Lake City. On Sunday, 27 November 1898, the new church was dedicated, according to church policy, free of debt. At least 1,000 people crowded into the church, which was designed for a seating capacity of 650. Christian Scientists from several nearby states traveled to Salt Lake City for the occasion. Services were opened by Mrs. Frank D. Kimball, acting First Reader in the absence of Lewis B. Coates, who was back east on church business with Mrs. Eddy. Mrs. Kimball read a letter from Mrs. Eddy praising the dedication of the Utah members. Thus began the thirty-second Christian Science branch church, which was restored in the 1970s and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
