CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST
(CHRISTIAN SCIENCE)
Because of its espousal of spiritual healing and its affirmation that Christian Science is incompatible with reliance upon materia medica, the Church of Christ, Scientist has been one of the most important of the nonconventional religions in America as well as a matter of intense controversy from the day of its founding.
THE FOUNDER: The Church of Christ, Scientist was founded by Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1919) who as a young woman had been continually hobbled with poor health. In 1862 she learned of Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, a mental healer in Portland, Maine. In October of that year she traveled to Portland and placed herself under his care. She soon experienced some relief of her symptoms which she ascribed to his efforts. She became his student and took the opportunity, when offered, to pass them on to others. While grateful for his help and generous with words of praise at the time of his death in 1866, she was disturbed by the periodic return of her ilness and the conflicts of Quimby's ideas and those she found in the bible. Two weeks after Quimby's death, on February 1, 1866, she slipped on an icy pavement. Three days later while slowly and painfully recuperating, the Biblical Truth was imparted to her and her health was restored immediately. That event marked the beginning of Christian Science. She quickly saw the conflict between the newly discovered truth and some of Quimby's ideas and further study led her to abandon Quimby's mental and magnetic teachings altogether. She had realized that God was the only Life, and that Life was the only reality of being. There was no healing agent, as Quimby taught, either magnetic force or mind, only the unity with God in which there was no room for disease.

OPINION from the July 30, 1999 edition Editor's note The Christian Science Monitor archive includes stories dating back to 1980. Some early articles lack sufficient formatting, and will appear as one long column without paragraph breaks. We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. A millennium is a millenium is a milennium Stephen Lapointe BOSTON - There are many soaring hopes for the new millennium. I have a rather humble one: that we learn to spell the word correctly. Unfortunately, in the Scrabble Game of Life, there is an apparent shortage of N's. I recall an exchange with a decorated television producer who was developing a documentary on the dawn of the 20th century. Somewhat surprisingly, the program proposal had been rebuffed several times. Finally this producer, a fastidious Yale graduate, handed me the proposal's cover letter. And there it was, in the opening paragraph: "Due to the surge of interest in the millenium [sic], this program is guaranteed to reach a substantial viewership...." When I alerted the producer to the error, she was utterly dumbfounded, as if told by a reliable source that the sun had been extinguished.

Star actor pledges he won't be retiring anytime soon Bonnie Churchill Special to The Christian Science Monitor HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. - Jack Nicholson stood in front of a Van Gogh painting. When he walked into the museum, there wasn't a soul around. He took advantage of the silence, and for five minutes just drank in the vigor of the famed artist's strokes. He sighed, and turned around, only to find eight people not looking at the masterpiece on the wall, but staring at him. "That's the most uncomfortable example of the fascination with film stars," recalls Mr. Nicholson in a recent interview.

A tailor-made role for talented actor Bonnie Churchill Special to The Christian Science Monitor HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. - Geoffrey Rush sat in his canvas-backed set chair reading a script. The Oscar winner says he never counts the lines of dialogue. "It must be my stage training," he says. "It doesn't matter how lengthy the role is, but what the character has to say." When he was in the midst of playing the Marquis de Sade in the film "Quills," a role that won him a Best Actor nomination at this year's Academy Awards, director John Boorman sent him the script of "The Tailor of Panama" (see review, page 17). "As I read it, I couldn't help but think, compared to the depraved Marquis, the role of Harry in 'Tailor of Panama' is absolutely normal," Rush says.

We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. The end of long airport lines is approaching the runway Ruth Walker Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor TORONTO - Details are everything. And time really is money. It's hard to imagine where these old saws could be more apt than in aviation - especially since global air travel is expected to double, roughly, between the beginning of this new decade and its end. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a standards-setting body of the United Nations, with headquarters in Montreal, is abuzz over new technologies being counted on to unclog air-travel congestion. At the "macro" end these developments include satellite-based air-traffic control systems; at the "micro" end they include "smart cards" that will let you breeze through passport controls with the nonchalance of an urban commuter swiping a transit pass at a subway turnstile.

What is Skepticism?
The modern skeptic movement is devoted to scientific examination of extraordinary claims, particular involving paranormal events. The skeptic does not necessarily deny claims of ESP, dowsing, astrology, UFO's, ghosts, poltergeists, channeling, faith healing, near-death experiences, etc., but believes that such claims are and should be subject to scientific inquiry. Furthermore, the more unusual a claim is, the more evidence must be presented to support that claim. This credo of the modern skeptic movement can be briefly summarized as Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof. Famous modern skeptics include James Randi (The Amazing Randi), a professional magician and MacArthur prize winner, and Martin Gardner, former Scientific American columnist and author of many books. Magazines such as the Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic represent the skeptical point of view.
