The unwillingness of many Christian Science parents to seek help from physicians for their critically ill children has led to many painful and unnecessary deaths and, increasingly, to legal actions that have become burdensome to the Church and its members

"B eloved in Thee I Am Well Pleased" is the epitaph on the gravestone of James Andrew Wantland. According to the Gospel of Saint Luke, God spoke these words to his son, Jesus, at Jesus' baptism. Given that James Andrew WantlandAndrew, he was calledwas twelve years old when he died, the choice of epitaph is striking. It does not express the sentiments one usually associates with the untimely death of a child. It suggests satisfaction, rather than regret or loss or sorrow. On the grave of a mature person it would presumably pay tribute to a life of accomplishment and fulfillment; on that of a child it seems almost too much to bear. But Andrew Wantland was the child of Christian Scientists, and the children of Christian Scientists have much to bear. I know. I am one. Most people who have heard of Christian Science know one thing about it: Christian Scientists do not "believe" in doctors. More accurately, Christian Scientists do not believe in medical science, or what they call "materia medica." They generally do not accept medical care for themselves, and many do not permit it for their children. They believe they can heal through prayer. Had my brother or sister or I contracted a serious illness or met with a life-threatening accident while we were growing up, we would have been expected to heal ourselves, just as we were expected to heal ourselves of colds, flu, allergies, and bad behavior. That we survived to adulthood was a matter of luck. Andrew Wantland was not so lucky.

Buzkashi - an Afghan tradition thrives
A favorite Afghan pastime reflects the values of the country: strength, courage, and horsemanship. By Lucian Kim The dozens of turbaned horsemen on their prancing steeds assemble on a dusty field on the outskirts of this city in northern Afghanistan. Despite their shouts and cracking whips, however, the riders' intent is peaceful. As they do on most Friday afternoons after prayer, the horsemen have gathered for a friendly match of buzkashi, or goat grabbing. Across northern Afghanistan, as well as in neighboring Central Asian states, this winter sport has been an enduring pastime for centuries. The object of the game is for a member of two competing teams to pick up the carcass of a decapitated calf or goat from the ground, carry it around a flag, and return it to a circle in front of the judges. It is not surprising that a game that prizes courage, horsemanship, and brute strength would be one of the most popular forms of public entertainment here. Buzkashi is sport reduced to its simplest form, with no contrived side-shows or complicated rules. And, as many things are done in Afghanistan, the seeming chaos of a buzkashi match actually follows a deliberate system that is not always obvious to the foreign observer.

It's part of a larger effort to control the proliferation of unsolicited e-mail, including a federal crackdown on fraudulent spammers, a push for a new federal antispam law, and the development of more sophisticated blocking technology. Internet experts contend that spam costs billions of dollars a year by consuming valuable space on commercial computer servers and wasted employee time. Some argue that the volume and degrading nature of much spam has done immeasurable harm to the Internet's viability as a new mode of commerce.

Christian Science A non-Christian religion The main teaching though the Holy Scripture is how man fell became sinful and is in need of redemption. That God would one day send a savior that would accomplish this by bringing man back into a one to one relationship with Him. One would think that if a group calls themselves Christian this is what they would uphold. This is not true for Christian Science, which is neither Christian nor science. The founder Mary Baker was born in Bow, New Hampshire, July 16, 1821 to a devout religious family (Congregationalists) with 5 other children. Her father, Mark Baker, was a Calvinist whom she strongly disagreed with later on in life. The disagreements were on the main points of Scripture such as judgment and eternal punishment. From this rejection of Scripture and circumstances of ill heath she eventually sought out another understanding to the bible. Mary was married at the young age of 22 to George Glover in 1843 in Charleston, South Carolina. This was her only happy marriage that tragically lasted slightly longer than half a year as her husband died of yellow fever. She was left a widow, while being pregnant.

The Church of Christ, Scientist , often known as The Christian Science Church or internally as The Mother Church , was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in . Church teachings are based on the Bible and her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , the key doctrinal sources for the Church. Eddy argued that given the absolute perfection and goodness of God, sin, disease, and death were not of Him, and therefore could not be truly real. The material world was thus in effect an illusive blend of spiritual truth, or reality, and material "error" which could be remedied through the elevated spiritual understanding of God and man. This understanding, she contended, was what enabled Jesus in the Christian biblical record to heal. Adherents of this teaching, known as Christian Scientists , thus believe that disease can be overcome through faith, prayer, and an ever-deepening understanding of God and man's relation to Him. As a result, church members generally substitute prayer for traditional medical care, often with the aid of Christian Science practitioners (people who devote their full time to treatment through prayer) and claim to experience healing, often reporting these experiences in church publications since the church's founding.

MARY "FAKER" EDDY AND THE CULT OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE by Frank R. Zindler

American Atheists magazine, September, 1987. The less we know or think about hygiene, the less we are predisposed to sickness. Mary Baker Eddy
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
(Boston, First Church, 1875, 1898, p. 389)
action carried out by the parents, it is the result of deliberate inaction. Whether the sacrifice be the result of a deliberate action or inaction, it is done because the religious beliefs of the parents are considered more important than the child. One of the definitions which Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary gives for the term 'sacrifice' is "destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else." Far from being the rhetorical abuse of language alleged by religious critics, the term 'child-sacrifice' appears to be both accurate and appropriate for describing faith-healing-related deaths of children. Not only do certain parents think their religious beliefs are more important than the lives of their children, the State of Ohio thinks so too! The Ohio juvenile code at 2151.03(e) makes the astonishing claim that:
