The following chart shows a timeline of some of the events which lead to the multiplicity of Christian denominations. The chart is constructed to scale, so that each century takes the same amount of vertical space (with the exception of a slight vertical expansion for 1510-1530 to include the various Protestant denominational origins.) Note that there were long periods of time during which the interpretation of the Bible and doctrine were discussed and resolved without division into different communities.

Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Christian Church(Disciples of Christ), christian methodist episcopal Church, Episcopal
http://www.disciples.org/ccu/images/cocultr.htm
January 2001 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: In January of 2002, God willing, nine churches will enter a new relationship with one another, to be called Churches Uniting in Christ . These churches African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church, International Council of Community Churches, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Church of Christ, and United Methodist Church have been together for more than thirty years in the Consultation on Church Union. Seven of these churches have already officially voted to become Churches Uniting in Christ; and the other two, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, will act on the proposal next summer. We, the undersigned leaders, believe that the new relationship will bring our churches closer to that unity for which our Lord prayer on the last night of his life: "May they (the disciples and those who follow them) all be one ... that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:20). We give thanks to God for having brought us this far. While the new relationship will be based on eight visible marks of unity and will include a number of commitments, none is more important than the shared resolve to combat racism. Our churches have been divided by confessional differences, and these are important; but surely our deepest and most painful separations have stemmed from the experience of slavery and racism. Any effort to realize visible communion among us must pay primary attention to this reality. Thus, one of the marks of unity to which the churches bind themselves is "intentional commitment to promote unity with wholeness and to oppose all marginalization and exclusion in church and society based upon such things as race ... " Combating racism will be a hallmark of Churches uniting in Christ.

I. Group Profile
  • Name: African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME).
  • Founder: Richard Allen (1760-1831).
  • Date of Birth: February 14, 1760.
  • Birth Place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Year Founded: The church was conceived in 1787. Allen was ordained in 1799, and the church was formally organized in 1816.
  • History
Preliminary Beginnings. As early as 1784, black Methodists had already begun to hold exclusive meetings. Whites allowed this practice to go on, but with the provision that "proper white persons" be chosen to oversee the meetings (Baldwin, 1983:26). They had the intention of minimizing discontent and curbing any possible ideas of insurrection, but the unfortunate result was that blacks felt they were being restrained religiously (Baldwin:26). So began a dissatisfaction in the hearts of many blacks with regards to the Methodist church (which was itself in a gestational period in 1784). In February of 1786, Richard Allen, an African-American Methodist preacher, went to Philadelphia and began evangelizing to blacks there. He was accompanied in this endeavor by Absalom Jones and some other black members of Philadelphia's St. George's Methodist Church. The white congregation there was directly opposed to black assemblies; and accordingly, as before, they restricted the gatherings and also segregated worship service. At this time, Allen began to entertain the idea of forming a separate congregation for blacks, but his intentions met with considerable resistance in equal amounts from both blacks and whites.

Will Gravely N o major Protestant denominational family in post-Revolutionary America was immune from interracial strife. Whites and blacks confronted each other over who could govern, who could be pastor, who could own church property, and who could discipline congregants. For generations those rules were set by whites, who told the Africans (as they were collectively designated) only whites could govern. Only whites could discipline. Only whites could manage church property. Richard Allen changed the rules. The first Christian bishop of African descent in North America, he founded the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, one of America's first truly independent black denominations.

He became a local preacher at 18 and was ordained at 22. In 1771 he volunteered to travel to America. When the American War of Independence broke out in 1776 he was the only Methodist minister to remain in America. In 1784 John Wesley named Asbury and Thomas Coke as co-superintendents of the work in America. This marks the beginning of the "Methodist Episcopal Church of the USA". For the next 32 years, Asbury led all the Methodists in America.
