Families of Christian D enominations in North America:
Today, there are many ways of classifying the over 1,000 Christian faith groups in North America: Into three or four meta-groups (e.g. Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican), By "wing" (e.g. conservative, mainline, and liberal), By denomination (From the Amish to The Way) By theological belief system (Calvinism, Arminianism, etc.), and By religious family , (Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc.) This section describes how most denominations can be sorted into 15 families, according to their historical roots. We have largely patterned the following list of Christian families of denominations after the work of J Gordon Melton , the editor of the Encyclopedia of American Religions

    • The First Ecumenical council of Nicaea was called by emperor Constantine. The council met to deal with the schism created by Arianism. The Arians wished to avoid the heresy of Sabellius who believed in a divine monad which, by expansion, projected itself as Father, Son and Holy Spirita form of Modalism. The Arians separated the Son from God entirely so that they believed he was a creature having a beginning. "There was when he was not." The Son was but God's first creation, yet out of nothing and hence has preeminence over the rest of creation. The symbol answers the question, "Who is Jesus Christ."

Denominations
Christianity , in modern times, exists under diverse names. These variously named groups, Anglicans Baptists Catholics , etc. are called denominations Denominationalism is an ideology, which views some or all Christian groups as being, in some sense, versions of the same thing regardless of their distinguishing labels. Not all denominations teach this, however; and there are some groups which practically all others would view as apostate or heretical: that is, not legitimate versions of Christianity. There were some denominations in the past which do not exist today. Examples include the Gnostics (who at the time of the writing of the gospels had written many more gospels than are included in the Bible), and the Arians (who believed that Jesus Christ was a created being rather than coeternal with God the Father, and who outnumbered the non-Arians for a long time within the makeup of the institutional church). It is a matter of debate as to if these groups were heresies (new doctrines that were against the doctrines that were the true original ones), or if those beliefs were simply not defined up until that point. The greatest divisions in Christianity today however are between the

Introductory thoughts:
What is religion? There are many definitions for the term "religion" in common usage. On this web site, we define it very broadly, in order to include the greatest number of belief systems: "Religion is any specific system of belief about deity, often involving rituals, a code of ethics, and a philosophy of life." Thus we include here all of the great monotheistic religions, Eastern religions; Neopagan religions; a wide range of other faith groups, spiritual paths, and ethical systems; and beliefs about the existence of God(s) and Goddess(es). We recognize that most people define " religion " in a much more exclusive manner. Christianity There are many definitions for this term as well . Again, we use an inclusive definition: " An individual or group is Christian if they sincerely, thoughtfully and devoutly believe that they are Christian ." This generates a lot of angry Emails from some visitors to this site who are insistent on excluding some denominations as sub-Christian, quasi-Christian or non-Christian.

Christianity
Christianity is a group of religious traditions, originating with Jesus Christ, that assert that Jesus is Lord, Saviour, God, the son of God and messiah the sole saviour of all humanity. Introduction
Christianity consists of many branches, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, the various religious denominations of Protestantism. Other branches of Christianity have arisen which claim a separate historical lineage, such as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to a 1993 estimate, Christianity was the most populous religion , at 2.1 billion followers (1 billion Catholicism s, 500 million Protestantism Doctrine
The most crucial points in Christian teaching are Jesus' incarnation, atonement, crucifixion, death and miraculous resurrection to redeem mankind from sin and death. These events are believed by Christians to be the basis of God's work to reconcile humanity with himself. Many Christians believe that this emphasis on God giving his beloved Son for the sake of humanity is a key difference between Christianity and religions where the emphasis is instead placed solely on humans working for salvation. The most uniform and broadly agreed upon tradition of doctrine, with the longest continuous representation, repeatedly reaffirmed by official Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant definitions (although not without dissent, as noted below) asserts that specific beliefs are essential to Christianity, including: Mary, the mother of Jesus, bore in her womb and gave birth to the Son of God, who although eternally existent was formed in her womb by the Spirit of God. From her humanity he received in his person, a human intellect and will, and all else that a child would naturally receive from its mother.
