Taliesin
Taliesin is actually a title but is now most often used to refer to the 6th century Welsh druid Gwion Bach. His writing is the only so far in which I have found and actual reference to the 11-year cycle; i.e., he lived to a ripe old age for then and figured it out. Others other than him refer to the five month cycle but he quite precisely refers to a period of eight score muses, which in days is 5.5 lunar months. So I highly respect my possible ancestor's scientific skills. In this subsection I often refer to the book Taliesin: Shamanism and the Bardic Mysteries in Britain and Ireland by John Matthews (with additional material by Caitlin Matthews). The Aquarian Press/an imprint of Harper Collins, 1991 ISBN 1-85538-109-5. In Taliesin's transformational sequence he spends time in the belly of a hen, which may be related to the period of depression a few years before the first "seven score muses" shamanic initiation manic episode. Also his patron Elffin is described as having bread under the fingernails, which i believe refers to waning crescent moon. His inspiration comes at the last few drops of the cauldron, so before the crack of the cauldron at new moon, and then he must run or seek to avoid the goddess's wrath after new moon. He is found in a net, which is very like my pulling on a net (not sure if it was Haida, oops, Musqueam shellfish) after my sundance that left me floating in the water near the net.

A Profile of Celtic Paganism
he Celtic magical belief system is strongly rooted in the Earth and in the elemental spirits that are the essence of nature: Earth, Air, Fire, Water. Ancient Celts had a vast knowledge of healing and magical properties of roots, herbs and stones. Today's Celtic Pagans also incorporate incense and candles in their rites and practices. Celtic Pagans believe that different herbs, stones, incense or candles have different attributes, and that combining certain materials can strengthen a spell or ritual. A wonderful web site for explanations of incense, candle colors, stones, etc., is given below [ 1]. Celtic pagans are polytheistic, which means that we believe in many deities, and, like the candle colors, stones, etc., they each have their own attributes. For instance, for protection, you would call upon Merlin, for serenity you would call on Rhiannon, for creativity, Druantia. Above all, our strongest belief is in the great mother, Danu (a.k.a. mother nature). The main difference between Celtic paganism and some other pagan beliefs is that the female deity is considered more important and more powerful.

Why Wicca is Not Celtic Paganism
Version 2.5, ©1999 by Epona Perry.
Last modified November 15, 1999.
There are many out there who believe that Wicca and its related forms of NeoPagism are a type of Celtic Paganism (and vice versa), but this is simply not true. The following article is meant to be a comparison of Wicca and Celtic Paganism in order to demonstrate this, and to educate the public about Celtic Paganism. While Wicca certainly contains elements of Celtic mythology, folk magic and religious belief, its basic tenets and beliefs are radically different from those of Celtic Pagans. I intend only to show that these two religions are indeed different and distinct; this article is not meant as an attack against Wicca or those who are Wiccan. There is a list of the sources I used at the end of this article, and it is my hope that whether you agree or disagree with what I have to say, you will at least go check it out for yourself by reading some of the sources listed. I hope that this article will encourage the active pursuit of knowledge and spiritual development though knowledge.

History
The idea of reconstructionist Pagan religions has been around since at least the mid 1970s and is discussed in Margot Adler's 1979 edition of Drawing Down the Moon. Some organizations, like ADF, have been doing reconstruction work for many years, but their focus was never purely or particularly Celtic. Many individuals were in dialogue about what constituted genuine early Celtic religion and spirituality, and how to educate others about the differences between Wicca and the various forms of Celtic Paganism. These discussions initially took place in Pagan publications and around the fire at Pagan gatherings starting in the early 1980s. With the growth of the internet, dialogue on PODSnet Celtic, the GEnie network, Celtic-L and other online forums became the critical factor leading to a rapid spread of information after 1989. The phrase Celtic Reconstructionist (CR) began to gain common use during 1992 and 1993 to describe individuals who were trying to understand, research, and re-create an authentically Celtic path for modern Pagans.

ADF

Animal Symbolism in Celtic Mythology
Clannada na Gadelica
Recommended Site. The Clannada identify themselves as "Gaelic Traditionalists", rather than the more commonly used term Celtic Reconstructionists, since they feel there is not yet a clearly agreed-upon definition of that. Their site contains a wealth of information and is well worth exploring, although I don't necessarily agree with all of their views. I did find the site's navigational system a bit confusing, so be sure and explore all areas of their site — things are not necessarily where you'd expect them to be (for example, the essay on "Why Wicca is not Celtic" is under "Local GT Communities", for some reason).
Cornish Folklore Index
A fascinating collection of folklore from one of the less well-known of the "Six Celtic Nations".

Celtic Paganism MY Path
By Fraoch Donahue When people think of Pagans they think of "ungodly" atheists or savages sacrificing babies to "dark Gods." Or the more enlightened think it means the same as "Wiccans" and think we are all Wiccans who worship a Great Goddess and a Horned God. But Paganism covers a broad spectrum of Nature based, polytheistic religions, of which Wicca is but one. And Witchcraft might mean Wicca, but it might mean one of any number of unrelated magical practices as well. All of which are positive however. Satanism does NOT fit here at all, in any way, for it is not a Pagan religion. For years I've considered myself a "Witch" although now I tend to think of myself as more just "Pagan." I probably don't fit any of the standard images of a "Witch." I'm not Goth, although I have friends who are and think it's an attractive look and great life style for THEM, just not for me. I am certainly not "haggish" but give me a few decades. lol I guess I'm what you'd call "outdoorsy" or "earthy" and I even get called a "hippy" or a "granola" but I think I'm rather young for those labels (that would be my parents *s*). I favor bulky wool sweaters, jeans and hiking boots or sneakers most of the year, Indian cotton and gauze if not swimsuits in the short summers here. As you may guess from that, I'm not real nocturnal, I love sunshine. I suppose I do look like the "tree-hugger" I really am.

Why would a Christian choose to become a Pagan?
Why would a well-educated Twentieth Century woman choose to practice a faith with roots in prehistory? Neo-Paganism is the fastest growing religion today. For the purposes of this article, I am referring to Paganism as practiced in northern Europe prior to the coming of Christianity and by those of the modern world who are trying to re-discover and re-establish spiritual links that have been surpressed for hundreds of years. My story is much like hundereds of other Neo-pagans: I grew up in a lower/middle-class family in a Christian country. I grew up hearing that the version of Christianity my parents practiced was the only true religion and that anyone who did not worship as we did was doomed to eternal torment. Futhermore, it was my duty as a "good" Christian to try to convince others of the error of their ways and get them to accept the "true" gospel.

http://www.geocities.com/mabcosmic/articles/celtfaq.html
Celtic Pagan FAQ First, I must stress that the Celtic Paganism discussed in this FAQ is a *Modern* religion and not a direct representation of the religion practiced by the ancient Celts. Properly, modern Celtic Pagans should refer to themselves as Neo-Celts or Modern Celts and their religion and practices as Neo-Celtic Paganism or Modern Celtic Paganism or Celtic Reconstructionalists. However, it is generally understood that when someone calls themselves a Celtic Pagan, they understand that they are not practicing the *original* religion of the Celts, but rather a modern version of it. For the sake of this article, we will simply use the general term of 'Celtic Pagan' understanding that we are talking about Modern Celtic Paganism. This is a list of Celtic Pagan Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Like Neo-Paganism as a whole, Modern Celtic Paganism also contains much diversity (though in a much narrower scope) and therefore these answers may not fit everyone's view of Modern Celtic Paganism. However, I tried to keep my answers as broad as possible, to fit as many different traditions as possible. Many of the thoughts and ideas came from the lovely people on the CELTIC_P mailing list, whom I have credited in direct instances and whom I thank as a whole for their valuable feedback in this endeavor. To my knowledge this is the first Celtic Pagan FAQ, though there are many of these lists on Druidism, so if you don't see a question you have addressed here, try other newsgroups and mailing lists or some of the other excellent Celtic Pagan pages on the 'Net. The answers to the questions here are based on much research and of course my own opinion. I have tried to distinguish between common consensus and my opinion in such instances. For more about my own practice of Neo-Paganism, please see my My Celtic Paganism section, and for general questions about Neo-Paganism, see my Pagansim FAQ section.
