Meek challenges modern Celtic Christianity Review by David Livingston-Lowe
The Quest for Celtic Christianity
The Quest for Celtic Christianity is a long-overdue book and a welcome submission to the popular topic of 'Celtic Christianity' and 'Celtic spirituality'. It is encouraging to see a speaker of a Celtic language entering into a discussion that many with no active interest in the language have been promoting for years. Donald Meek is Professor of Celtic at the University of Aberdeen. A native Gaelic speaker from Caolas on the island of Tiree on Scotland's western coast, he was also the editor of the 1992 edition of the Gaelic Bible. Over the past decade, Meek has published several provocative articles which reassess popular notions of 'Celtic Christianity' and challenge common assumptions about the role of religion and religious institutions among the Scottish Gaels.
Meek looks with a critical (yet not unsympathetic) eye on the growth of the phenomenon we now call 'Celtic Christianity' and the related term 'Celtic spirituality'. He traces it, in its most current form, as an explosion of interest increasing from 1960 onward, which shows no sign of abating. But Meek also shows that the current fascination with things Celtic is part of a larger, and longer-term process that can be traced through various writers and thinkers over the past several centuries. Meek compares the 18th-century ideal of the 'Noble Savage', and the inherent racial stereotyping that accompanied that notion, to the romanticized view of the Scottish Highlanders, particularly after their pacification. This ideal was part of the driving force behind James MacPherson's influential 18th-century fiction based on the Gaelic hero Ossian

"My Druid is Christ, the son of God..." St. Columba St. Patrick was called to return to the place of his slavery, St. Ninian called to evangelize the Scots of Galloway, and St. Brendan called to cast off in his small boat and end up in Iceland bringing the light of Christ to the Norse. St. Columba, too, was forced to move by evil circumstance, leaving the monasteries he had established in northern Ireland for a rocky, yew-covered isle we call Iona. The Celtic monks called their peregrinations the "White Martyrdom". White, because their blood was not shed (though that could and did happen), and martyrdom, because they had to leave their beloved home. Their belief was that the spiritual journey of our lives demands both outward and inward wandering, often not knowing where God will lead. The Celts had wandered all across Europe before landing on its western fringes. They knew what it meant to pick up your feet and go. It is said that St. Aidan progressed around his diocese on foot, never on horseback except in case of emergency. When you travel afoot, you see the land, the sky, the water, and the people.

Making Myths and Chasing Dreams
By Ian Bradley Reviewed by Sharma Krauskopf and rated Celtic Christianity is a book about making myths and chasing dreams. Written by Ian Bradley who is a Senior Lecturer in Practical Theology at the University of St Andrews, a minister in the Church of Scotland, a regular broadcaster, and author of numerous books including The Celtic Way and Columba: Pilgrim and Penitent He traces the course of and describes the Celtic Christian revivalism from the eight and ninth century to modern day. He projects there were six great movements in this process.
  • Eight and ninth centuries when idealized portraits of Celtic saints were the rage. Twelfth and thirteenth centuries that produced the Arthurian legends and the Quest for the Holy Grail. The Reformation brought a new interest in and appropriation of the Celtic Church as a prototype of sturdy independent British Protestantism. Eighteen and nineteen centuries the interest revived along with the Romantic Movement. Early part of the twentieth century saw the development of the Celtic Twilight movement and focusing on Iona as a place of exceptional spiritual power.

During the course of the twentieth century, moreover, the library of Patrician studies has grown into 'a mountain of Himalayan proportions,' to quote E.A. Thompson." Unfortunately, much of that mountain is, to put it mildly, rubble. While some writers question the existence of Patrick, others treat the subject with such careless research that their books are filled with traditions from the last two centuries.

Celtic Christianity
Celtic Christianity describes Christianity as it was first received and practiced by communities with Celtic backgrounds that observed certain practices divergent from those in the rest of Europe. The conversion of pagan England was brought about by two very different missions; one, led by Augustine , from Rome that landed in Kent in AD , and the other from the Celtic Church, led by Columba , who went from Ireland to Iona and later to Northumbria . This term is also used to indicate a modern movement espousing the goal of recovering what it believes was the distinctive spirit of the earlier group.
How separate was the Celtic church?
It is easy to exaggerate the cohesiveness of the Celtic Christian communities. Their members never saw themselves in opposition to the Catholic establishment based on Rome as did the Arians Priscillianists or the Donatists in North Africa. Even at the height of the conflict between these communities and other Christian groups, they acknowledged the supremacy of the Pope and acquiesced to his specific commands.

What is Celtic Christianity?
WHAT IS CELTIC CHRISTIANITY?
By the Rev. Helen C. Harrison, MA
Imbolg, 1999
Many people of Celtic descent are not aware there is a form of Christianity that is native to the British Isles. It flourished prior to the ecclesiastical ascendancy of Roman Catholicism, which began to emerge in the 7 th century, and the Protestant Reformation, which started in the 16 th
When describing the Christian faith of Britain and Ireland, it is perhaps best to speak of varieties of Celtic Christianity rather than one monolithic presentation. Ancient Celtic Christianity was certainly a fusion of contemplative theology from the Desert Tradition of the ancient Coptic (Egyptian) Church with indigenous Celtic religious philosophy. But regions demonstrated more (or less) accommodation to the theology of Rome, and much later, Geneva, depending upon the period.
The Christian faith in Wales during the early centuries was influenced to some degree by Roman thought; in Ireland, it echoed the inspiration of Eastern Orthodoxy, especially the Syrian tradition. This essay represents a deeply Irish and more Orthodox presentation of Celtic Christianity, and does not discount other expressions which mirror a Roman or Protestant outlook. The purpose is to contrast all these forms of Christianity to enlighten the curious.
A Little History
The Celtic peoples originated in central eastern Europe around 1200 BCE. By about 150 BCE they had migrated, through military conquest, east to Russia, southeast to Asia Minor, south to Egypt, west to the Iberian Peninsula and north to Ireland. Although divided into many tribes, they were united by culture and language, with each region demonstrating distinct customs.

94. Surveying The Saints: Reflections On Recent Writings On 'Celtic Christianity' -

http://www.rutherfordhouse.org.uk/journals/meek2.htm
DONALD E. MEEK, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN In the Spring 1992 issue of this Bulletin, I called attention to the vogue for modern ‘Celtic Christianity’. Here I shall comment on changes that have become evident in the direction of the movement since I wrote my first papers on the subject in the early 1990s, and then I shall offer a survey of recent writings and interpretations of sources. In conclusion, I shall provide a brief overview of recent scholarly writing on Scottish saints.
Popular ‘Celtic Christianity’
Given the profusion of our itches, it is hardly surprising that this interpretation of early Christianity in the British Isles crosses denominational, and even religious, boundaries. It is also growing in its popularity, as is witnessed by the endless stream of publications claiming to expound some dimension of the theme. The popular brand of ‘Celtic Christianity’ is to be distinguished carefully from the properly academic study of the history of early Christianity in the British Isles in the period before 1100.
Patterns of Popular Publication
The popular books on ‘Celtic Christianity’ published in the 1980s can be divided into two broad groups: devotional literature, aimed at those who wish to use ‘Celtic’ models of prayer and reflection in public or private worship, as in the work of David Adam; and descriptive volumes, explaining the main themes of Celtic Christianity and stressing the differences between it and the present-day Christianity, as in the work of Ian Bradley and Esther de Waal.

Celtic Christianity Part of the rise in interest in all things celtic has been a rise in the popularity of 'Celtic Christianity'. Now, debate rages as to how (or if at all) authentic a lot of what goes under that name is, but that's perhaps beside the point. The fact is that there is a vast heritage of insight, liturgy, prayers and sacred art from the hey-day of the Celtic church, much of which has had a period of obscurity, but is now coming to the fore. So, here are some links to the best I've found

OK...so I am going to try to condense a chapter titled, "Artful Theology" from A Big-Enough God If you want to read some excerpts from the book, read on... On Celtic Christianity:
Quotes about Imagination, Art, and the Church:
"What I want to address is the role of art seen theologically. I am going to argue that a vibrant and serious attention to the creative arts, and a profound respect for their makers, is a hallmark of a healthy Church- crucial and profoundly theological- because we create in this particular and conscious way only in the light of the creative power of our God." (Maitland, 110) only way that it is proper to describe God. This has led to a prolonged struggle, between priest and prophet, priest and poet, law and charism." (Maitland, 125) "I blame the Church. The Church really hates creative imagination, especially if they can't understand it or don't know what it is for "I am not naive, and I do not want to romanticize squalor, but I do want to complain about a churchy habit of mind that believes that art is threatening before it even looks at the art." (135) "If the theologians want to fix, dogmatize, both the narratives and the narratives' meanings there is simply no studio within which the poets can work." (142)
