Donald E. Meek I f you go into any of the larger bookshops and look in the sections designated Religion or Mythology or even New Age, probably you will encounter books on "Celtic" themes, including "Celtic Christianity." The subject can also be encountered beyond the bookshops. It is actively fostered by some religious communities, and Celtic liturgies are being produced for those who wish to incorporate such prayers into their worship. Study guides are available for those wanting to explore Celtic Christianity in group discussion. It is easy, indeed comforting, to assume that modern Celtic Christianity offers the public a rediscovery of a faith well-known in the early medieval period but subsequently lost.

Celtic Christianity Celtic Christianity differs from other forms of Christianity fundamentally through its view of Jesus as a fertility figure.
Prevalent throughout the British Isles for four hundred years from the second century AD, Celtic Christianity is believed by scholars to be one of the closest forms of Christianity to the teachings of the Historical Christ.
The Druid cultures that embraced this new mythology recognized in the figure of Christ a fulfillment of their own religion's aims. Celts believed Jesus was an ordinary man, who had achieved mystical enlightenment. Stories of the resurrection were read in the poetic sense that was natural to druid priests, who saw this as a metaphor for change from mere human to Divine consciousness that they themselves sought through mystic practices. A death and rebirth of one's spirit, not of the body, and an echo of the already established death and rebirth understanding of their Nature-based religion.
To express this understanding symbolically, the Celts portrayed the crucified Christ with an erection, poetically rendering both death and rebirth/fertility.
The cynical concept of Original Sin , that Man's natural state is evil and can only be corrected through baptism/initiation into the Roman Catholic Church, was completely alien to the Celtic Christians, who believed Man was born with Original Virtue; that a Divine

What is Celtic Christianity? Andrew Dunn
The interest today in Celtic spirituality is huge. Whether it is in the art, music, saleable handcrafts, or books about it, or in the growth of modern Celtic communities and retreats, this ancient way of describing how to be Christian, and how to relate to God, God's creation, God's word and God's people, is attracting attention.
"The rediscovery of the Celtic world has been an extraordinary revelation for many Christians in recent years, an opening up of the depths and riches within our own tradition which many of us had not before suspected", writes Esther de Waal in Wales. The breadth of the interest in Celtic spirituality is surprising. People across the theological spectrum find elements in Celtic Christianity that attract them. Liberal Christians find the emphasis on the love of God and inclusiveness irresistible. Conservatives discover in Celtic spirituality a theological and biblical orthodoxy that gives them certainty about its aims and roots, and enables them to explore its spiritual offerings with confidence. Those involved with Creation spirituality, along with green and eco-sensitive believers, delight in the Celtic honouring of creation as God's Second Book. Feminists find the gender equality in leadership honours their discoveries. Earth-centred Christians delight in the maternal principle of the early Celtic cradling which gave women a prominent place in society, mission centres and church.

The spiritual teachings which follow were given to us directly by a Celtic people who are thousands of years old. They are known by many names, but are referred to most commonly as the Tuatha De Danaan, the Sidhe, the Faer Folk, or the people of the Faery. They live today as they have lived for thousands of years, in a land known as Tir na n'Og, the original Garden of Eden. This Entranceway leads to

Celtic Christianity
A Celtic song of praise to God in His creation. Delightful it is to stand on the peak of a rock, in the bosom of the isle, gazing on the face of the sea. I hear the heaving waves chanting a tune to God in heaven; I see the glittering surf. I see the golden beaches, their sand sparkling; I hear the joyous shrieks of the swooping gulls. I hear the waves breaking, crashing on rocks, like thunder in heaven. I see the mighty wales. I watch the ebb and flow of the ocean tide; it holds my secret, my mournful flight from Eire. Contrition fills my heart as I hear the sea; it chants my sins, sins to numerous to confess. Let me bless almighty God. Whose power extends over sea and land, whose angels watch over all. Let my study sacred books to calm my soul; I pray for peace, kneeling at heaven's gate. Let me do my daily work, gathering seaweed, catching fish, giving food to the poor. Let me say my daily payers, sometimes chanting, sometimes quiet, always thanking God. Delightful it is to live on a peaceful isle, in a quiet cell, serving the King of kings.
(Columba - Celtic monk and missionary, known for his love for the creation and his songs of praise to the Creator.)

35. Celtic Christianity
Celtic Orthodox Christian Church. What is the original celtic christianity? What does celtic christianity offer to the rest of the Church?
http://celticchristianity.org/library/wru.html
Celtic Orthodox Christian Church What is the original Celtic Christianity
True Celtic Christianity follows the complete Christian Faith, and calls to mind some often overlooked truths. They are not beliefs which should distinguish us from any other right-believing church, but are necessary components of the True Christian Faith which are sadly neglected in our time. Among those beliefs are:
  • The world can be an opportunity for encountering God's Grace. We are supposed to be co-workers with God, to heal and bless the world. All of our acts should be appropriate to be worthy offerings to God. We are united in the Body of Christ by sharing the same Faith and Sacraments regardless of time or place, in a holy "chain of charity." Only the combination of fidelity to the Christian Faith and the succession of Grace in the Apostolic succession of Bishops is sufficient for a church to be a member of the Body of Christ.
An additional, very detailed, essay: Our Bishops' Statement What does Celtic Christianity offer to the rest of the Church?
True Celtic Christianity offers the the Undivided Church's understanding of Christianity. Throughout the history of Christianity various groups created new, less authentic, understandings of God's teachings and fell away from the Body of Christ. This sad history has continued to our time. Celtic Christianity offers a chance to resist that abandonment of Christ. We reject any attempt, past or present, to alter the Christian Doctrine, Sacraments or morals. We call all who truly seek Christ and His Church to the True, unaltered, Faith He taught and the Sacraments He instituted.

http://www.openheaven.com/library/celtic/traditions.htm
Introduction to Celtic Christianity - by Caedmon Greene Celtic Christianity was characterised by extreme holiness, a love of God and man, and wanderlust from the need to bring the light of Christ to the world. Also, many of the issues that the Celtic Christians dealt with are amazingly contemporary - things like the position of women in the Church, nature and our environmental surroundings, and dealing with others of different customs and beliefs (both pagan and Christian). Much of its attraction comes from how it dealt with these problems, taking the best from older traditions while still standing firm in the truth. Tradition holds that the faith was brought to the British Isles by Joseph of Arimathea and Aristobulus in A.D. 55 (some argue it was as early as A.D. 35) [Some] modern scholarship rejects this, and place the introduction in the middle of the second century. Little is known of the first several centuries, however, Christianity was firmly established in Roman Britain by the time of the council of Arles (314) as two British bishops were in attendance. (There is also a possibility that British bishops were at Nicaea).
