I arise today,
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of the sun, radiance of the moon.
Splendor of fire, speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind, depth of sea,
Stability of earth and firmness of rock.
I arise today,
Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me. From the snares of devils, from temptation of vices, From everyone who shall wish me ill, Afar and near, alone and in a multitude St. Patrick My Druid is Christ, the son of God, Christ, Son of Mary, the Great Abbot, The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. St. Columba I would like to have the men of Heaven in my own house: With vats of good cheer laid out for them. I would like to have the three Marys, their fame is so great. I would like people from every corner of Heaven. I would like them to be cheerful in their drinking, I would like to have Jesus too here amongst them. I would like a great lake of beer for the King of Kings

What is Celtic Christianity? The idea that there was a ‘Celtic’ flavour of Christianity probably dates back to the time of the Venerable Bede, who saw the older churches of his westerly, Celtic, neighbours as centres for great learning and piety, as well as for more controversial issues of diversity of practice. In the modern era, people continue to look to the piety, learning and colour of the Christianity of early Brittany, Cornwall, Man, Ireland, Scotland and Wales for inspiration and for a model of an early Christianity which was rooted in western Europe. Pilgrims to the ancient churches of Celtic Britain, Ireland and Brittany continue to be moved by the beauty of the setting of the earliest Christian sites. Manuscript collections in libraries all over Europe bear witness to the genius of Celtic Christians. Founded in 1995, the Celtic Christianity programme at Lampeter brings together the best of scholarship in both Celtic Studies and Theology. Founded in 1822, Lampeter is the third oldest University in England and Wales. Lampeter's studies in Celtic Christianity date back to 1827, when Rice Rees, the first Professor of Welsh at Lampeter brought to Lampeter his interest in the Welsh Saints, upon which he did pioneering work. Now, 175 years later, Lampeter again enjoys a world-wide reputation as the centre for Celtic Christian studies.

http://www.grailchurch.org/celtic.htm
menu T HE CAMBRIAN EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE GRAIL Ancient Church of Cambria WHAT IS CELTIC CHRISTIANITY? Specifically, Celtic Christianity refers to the branch of Christianity which was unique to the peoples of the British Isles during the early Middle Ages. Although there is some debate over exactly when and how Christianity got to the British Isles, there is no doubt that it was firmly established by the 2nd Century, because Ireneaus, the Bishop of Lyon, had significant interaction with them. The first, great Celtic son was Morien, also known as Pelagius. Pelagius was a spokesman for Celtic theology. Pelagius has been labeled as a heretic by traditional theologians because they favor a Latin version of Christianity. Pelagius' opponent, Augustine, succeeded in expelling the Pelagians out of the Roman Empire during the 5th Century. Augustine became the father of Latin Christianity. Celtic Christianity holds to a balanced view of the Biblical doctrines of free-will and predestination. Ostensibly, these doctrines were the focus of controversy between Augustine and Pelagius. Through the centuries, Pelagian Celts have emphasized the individual's responsibility to obey God's moral law. Latin Christianity has tended to rely upon the strong arm of the state. Celtic Christianity does not have much interest in the grand worship of state religion. Celtic Christians are fond of the small group and a liturgy which is an expression of personal faith. From ancient times, they have had great interest in spiritual gifts, manifestations of the Divine presence, religious revivals, and world evangelism.

"My Druid is Christ, the son of God..."
St. Columba Celtic christianity and spirituality are irrevocably bound to the early Celtic Christian saints of Ireland and Scotland. I looked up the word "peregrine" in my handy Webster's Collegiate, since the Irish evangelist monks referred to themselves as "Peregrinari Pro Christ" (pilgrims for Christ). The meaning was short and sweet: "having a tendency to wander." My mind then wandered through various notions about journeying and the word peregrine (I always think of soaring falcons), but soon landed on a much more prosaic Peregrine, better known as "Pippin" Took, companion of Frodo Baggins on his journey to destroy the Ring. Now Frodo did not want to leave his home; the Shire was green, the ale was strong, the food was plenteous, and to sit by the fire, reading and studying, made for a very pleasant life. But he had to go. Just as St. Patrick was called to return to the place of his slavery, St. Ninian called to evangelize the Scots of Galloway, and St. Brendan called to cast off in his small boat and end up in Iceland bringing the light of Christ to the Norse. St. Columba, too, was forced to move by evil circumstance, leaving the monasteries he had established in northern Ireland for a rocky, yew-covered isle we call Iona.

The Celtic church has many lessons to teach the contemporary Church. The early Celtic Christian church was catholic and apostolic in nature, fiercely independent, in tune with creation, yet remaining committed to Scripture and tradition. It drew on the positive aspects of the earlier druidic religion yet remained true to the Faith and thereby was able to transform Celtic society without destroying it. I would like the Anglican Communion to model the ancient Celtic church: catholic and apostolic in nature, resisting of overburdening and corrupting hierarchy and structure, in tune with the created world, remaining committed to Scripture and tradition, and finally acting as a powerful transforming agent to Western society. Some general introductions to Celtic Christianity follow.

Adomnan of Iona - The Life of Columba
      • Comment Adomnan's life of Columba is the collected stories about the life of Saint Columba written on Iona by his successor about 100 years after the saint's death. The stories cover Columba's miracles, prophesies and visions of angels.
      • For me the main interest in the book is the picture of Iona it gives. It is an ideal book to read if you are about to visit Iona or have just visited, as the places mentioned and the scenes described often have remained unchanged since Columba's time. Only a quarter of the 400+ page book is taken up with "The Life Columba", there is a 100 page scholarly and readable introduction, extensive notes and a full bibliography. ( Stuart

      • Some of Bede's most glowing praise is for the Celtic Saints but it is always tempered with a reminder that their practices, such as dating Easter, did not agree with the Roman practice. (

St. Joseph of Arimathea (wealthy through trading in Britannia tin and who prophetically provided Christ's "rich man's tomb", Mt 27:57) is seen holding the funerary vessels. Glastonbury Tor is in the background.
Vision: Celtic Evangelism Fellowship is an association of born-again Christians committed to spreading the Gospel and the authority of the Bible, particularly throughout the British Isles, Europe and America in the spirit of the venturing peregrini (wild goose). Also, while not ascetically extreme (profoundly withdrawn), C.E.F. desires "active monasticism" through the establishment of harmonious Christian community that stands in contrast to the world. Understanding the spiritually debilitating leaven of modern, popular culture and its vain preoccupations, we thus desire to maintain an oasis for the alternative, Kingdom-centered life.
