Rationale for Establishing the Center
The Roman Catholic Church in the U.S. is rapidly changing its demographic makeup, and the same may be said of the Episcopalian and other Churches which locate themselves within the overall western Catholic Tradition. Nearly one half of all U.S. Roman Catholics are Latinos/as, and their proportional representation will only continue to increase within the Church. Similar transformations are also occurring in other Christian (western Catholic) Churches. This demographic reality (and its profound social, pastoral and theological consequences) strongly suggests that further research into Latino/a Catholicism, broadly understood, is an urgent and necessary task. Catholic universities, precisely because of their Catholic character, are important as loci for the interdisciplinary, rigorous study of religion beyond the merely descriptive. Indeed, theological reflection on social scientific findings is an especially important and appropriate contribution of the Catholic university.

Why " Roman Catholic " instead of " Catholic "?
We use the phrase " Roman Catholic " in place of " Catholic " to avoid confusion. Most Christian faith groups acknowledge the Nicene Creed and thus regard themselves as "Catholic," at least as far as being part of the " catholic and apostolic church ." Within any one given faith group, the meaning of the term " Catholic " is relatively clear. But our site deals with all Christian denominations and all other religions. To assure clarity and to avoid ambiguity, we use the term " Roman Catholic " when referring to the church headed by the pope in Rome. We use similar terms (e.g. Evangelical Catholic, Anglo-Catholic) when referring to some other faith groups. We often use the abbreviation RCC to refer to the Roman Catholic Church. This saves wear and tear on your eyeballs and on our fingers.

Reformation
A term covering a number of changes in Western Christianity (Europe) between the 14th and 17th centuries, resulting in the split in Christianity between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. The Reformation, widely conceived, was a reaction against the hierarchical and legalistic structures of the Papacy and the Roman Catholic Church. Reformers rallied against the Roman Catholic Church's dogmatic theology, economic and religious exploitation of the common masses, and colonialization and conquest of indigenous peoples. Most fundamentally, the Reformation challenged the Papacy's claims of divine authorization and infallibility.
One particularly well-known Catholic method of exploitation in the Middle Ages was the practice of selling indulgences, a monetary payment of penalty which, supposedly, absolved one of past sins and/or released one from purgatory after death. It was the selling of indulgences that led the Reformer Martin Luther to post his famous 95 Theses - a document challenging Roman Catholic authority in theological matters, including indulgences and many others. Luther's opposition to the selling of indulgences was not new, however. In most of the Reformation movements stress lay not upon new understandings or doctrines, but on a return to the more authentic and original excellence of tradition.
Luther, one of the main Protestant Reformers, eventually arrived at the conclusion that divine relationship and salvation come by grace through faith, not by good works, belief in dogma, or economic propitiation. One's relationship to the divine is initiated by God, and one can only participate in this relationship by remaining open to it. Therefore, Luther's theology placed him in square opposition to the Roman Catholic practice of selling indulgences.

Overview:
During the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation split away from the Roman Catholic Church , thus destroying the unity of Christendom in western Europe. The Protestant movement further fragmented during the following centuries. At the present time, they number over a thousand Christian denominations in North America alone. Both sections of Christendom agree on some major theological matters, like Angels, the crucifixion , Jesus' incarnation, bodily resurrection , and the imminent return of Jesus to earth in the second coming Heaven, Hell , the Trinity, and the virgin birth of Jesus. They partly agree about baptism and the makeup of the Bible. But there exists a great gulf between the two groups on other matters of belief and church practice particularly with regard to salvation and the rapture . The divisions are deep and long-standing. This has led to prejudice and discrimination. Hostility is particularly high in some countries in South America, where Protestants particularly Pentecostals have been taking "market share" away from the Catholic Church. Bloodshed has resulted in some countries. These conflicts have sometimes made it difficult for Catholics and Protestants to mount joint programs in North America to fight for causes on which they both agree. However, recent years have seen some social problems in which both Roman Catholics and conservative Protestants have

Reasons for low Mass attendance
In the June 7 2004 issue of America, Fr Andrew Greeley has an article titled 'Children of the Council.' The Vatican 2 Council. And his primary purpose is to try to explain why weekly Mass attendance has decreased since Vatican 2. His primary argument is that pre-Vatican 2 Catholicism was defined by rules, as a response to the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, and Vatican 2 seemingly eased those rules: The moderate reforms of Vatican II—support for biblical research, seeing the church as the people of God, ecumenical engagement with Protestants, better relations with Jews, vernacular liturgy, support for religious freedom—would not appear to have caused the decline in Mass attendance among American Catholics. But the changes brought about by the council helped to destabilize the structures (the behavior patterns and supporting motivations) of Catholicism. While serious Catholic scholars knew that change is a constitutive part of the history of the Catholic Church, the mantra that governed Catholic life in the 19th and early 20th centuries was that “the church should not change, cannot change and will not change.” Catholicism was perceived as essentially a network of permanent rules enforced by the penalty of mortal sin and the possibility of eternal damnation for those who broke them.

Controversy highlights belief of traditionalists like those in Richmond, N.H.
By Michael Paulson, Globe Staff, 2/22/2004 RICHMOND, N.H. The worshipers at the St. Benedict Center are not big consumers of popular culture. Many don't own televisions. The nearest multiplex is miles away. And R-rated movies are frowned upon. ADVERTISEMENT But Mel Gibson has done what MTV could not. By producing a graphic motion picture depicting the last 12 hours of Jesus's life, Gibson has punctured the cultural isolation of this small community of believers, who worship in Latin, eschew birth control, cling to the rituals and beliefs of the Catholic Church before the Second Vatican Council, and claim Gibson and his father as theological allies. "He's one of us," said James G. Gajewski, 17, of West Chesterfield, N.H., sitting at brunch in the compound's fellowship hall one recent Sunday. Gajewski's family moved from the Berkshires to southern New Hampshire in search of people with shared values. "We don't have a computer or a TV at home, but we've all seen the trailer 20 or 30 times, and we're all very much looking forward to it," he said of advance publicity for the movie. "Let the truth be known."

Articles CHRISTIANITY IN BANGLADESH By Jerome D'Costa Author of the book Bangladeshey Catholic Mondoli (The Catholic Church in Bangladesh) Introduction: The Advent of the Portuguese and Christianity in Bengal: Renowned Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope of South Africa in 1498 and landed at Calicut (present Kozikode of India) by discovering the sea-route to India. From 1500 onwards, the Portuguese established their power first in Cranganore, then to Cochin and Goa. With these traders and commercial opportunists, also came Franciscan, Dominican, Augustinian, and Jesuit missionaries to bring Indian heathens to Christ. From 1517 onwards, Portuguese traders from Goa were traversing the sea-route to Bengal but were not successful in establishing trading posts in this part of India. Only in 1537, were they allowed to settle and open customs houses at Satgaon (near present-day Hooghly) of West Bengal (India) and Chittagong of present-day Bangladesh. In 1577, Mughal emperor Akbar permitted the Portuguese to build permanent settlements and churches in Bengal. The first Christians in Bengal were the Portuguese themselves. After their intermarriage with local women, their descendants became the first indigenous Christians. Then came the local converts to Christianity from both Hinduism and Islam.

114. Anti
Anticatholicism on the Internet. By Robert P. Lockwood. Virtually ignored, however, is the abundance of anti-catholicism that exists on the Internet.
http://www.catholicleague.org/research/anticat_internet.htm
Anti-Catholicism on the Internet By Robert P. Lockwood When Joseph Lieberman was nominated as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate in the summer of 2000, commentators feared an upsurge in anti-Semitism in reaction to the Jewish senator from Connecticut. Reporters scanned the Internet to look for anti-Semitic sites and searching for anti-Semitic hate speech. For the most part, they found, other than the usual suspects, no outburst of such sentiments. After the election, Jewish organizations praised the fact that the senator’s national campaign evidenced little or nothing of traditional anti-Semitic activities in the United States. It goes without saying that this tolerance toward Mr. Lieberman’s Jewish faith is an admirable sign. Yet, it is questionable if the results of that initial Internet search would have been the same if either party had nominated a Catholic for president or vice president. It is also questionable whether a reporter in that event would have even considered combing the Internet for anti-Catholic rhetoric. More likely, that reporter would have been raising questions about the candidate’s Catholic faith, seeing that faith as a threat rather than an opportunity for tolerance. If the reporter did comb the Internet, it would have been to find material to buttress that alleged Catholic threat, rather than to warn about an underbelly of anti-Catholic prejudice. And the reporter would not have to look very far or "surf" very long. The Internet is inundated with anti-Catholic websites and anti-Catholic rhetoric.

    118. Why Catholicism?
How wondrous, that despite these wounds, the Church has continued on, and has produced saints in every age. So, why embrace catholicism?
    http://transporter.com/Apologia/why_cath.htm
Hundreds of Catholics each year are led to doubt their faith because they do not know the biblical basis of it. What is the biblical basis of our faith? Why are we Catholic?
The first reason to be Catholic is Jesus Christ.
    Who was/is Jesus Christ?
Jesus of Nazareth is the only founder of a religion who was pre-announced hundreds of years before his birth. In Isaiah 53, written several centuries before Christ, we read:
  • (v5)...he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins,
Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed.
  • (v12)...Therefore I will give him his portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, Because he surrendered himself to death and was counted among the wicked; And he shall take away the sins of many, and win pardon for their offenses.
Also, see Isaiah 49:1-7; 50:4-11; and the rest of Isaiah 53. In Psalm 22, written as early as 980 BC, we find what could pass for an eye-witness account of the crucifixion of Jesus (the opening words of which he quotes in Matthew 27:46).
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me... All who see me scoff at me... "He relied on the Lord; let him deliver him..." They have pierced my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones... They divide my garments among them; for my clothing they cast lots...

Roman Catholicism in Nineteenth-Century Great Britain
George P. Landow, Professor of English and Art History, Brown University
he Roman Catholic Church, which forms the largest body of Christians in the world, had a comparatively minor role in nineteenth-century England, Wales, and Scotland. Ever since Henry VIII founded the Church of England (or Anglican Church), the Catholic minority who had remained faithful to the Church of Rome often found themselves looked upon with suspicion and denied many civil rights, including that of serving in Parliament, owning certain kinds of property, and attending Oxford, Cambridge, and other major universities , which existed in large part to train Church of England clergy. Several nineteenth-century events markedly changed the position of British Catholics and their church. First, in 1829 Parliament granted them full civil rights , including the right to serve in the legislature. In 1840 Parliament followed this dramatic change in the condition and power of Roman Catholics by disestablishing or removing the official tax-supported status of the Anglican Church in predominantly Catholic Ireland. The Oxford Movement, or Tractarianism
