62. StayCatholic.com
Features essays and articles that present the biblical case for catholicism.
http://www.staycatholic.com
Sometimes Catholics are talked into leaving the Church by those who claim that its teachings are unbiblical. StayCatholic.com features a number of essays and articles that address this problem head on. A "Doctrinal Concordance of the Bible" is also included. It can be used to demonstrate the biblical case for Catholicism. There are two versions, a long version in the articles section and a one page version that appears on the "Book and Gift Store" page. The shorter version can be used as a handout or pocket reference. Most of the articles and essays include links to books or tapes for further study. Proceeds from the sale of books and tapes will be used to help defray the cost of advertising StayCatholic.com. The chief purpose of this site will be to reach those who would not normally be exposed to Catholic Apologetics. Toward that end a great deal of the advertising will be in secular newspapers. Please pray that StayCatholic.com will be effective in its mission. Also pray that we are able to find a way to launch a Spanish mirror site in the future.

Is Catholicism Pagan?
If few Fundamentalists know the history of their religion—which distressingly few do—even fewer have an appreciation of the history of the Catholic Church. They become easy prey for purveyors of fanciful "histories" that claim to account for the origin and advance of Catholicism.
Anti-Catholics often suggest that Catholicism did not exist prior to the Edict of Milan, which was issued in 313 AD and made Christianity legal in the Roman Empire. With this, pagan influences began to contaminate the previously untainted Christian Church. In no time, various inventions adopted from paganism began to replace the gospel that had been once for all delivered to the saints. At least, that is the theory.
Pagan Influence Fallacy
Opponents of the Church often attempt to discredit Catholicism by attempting to show similarities between it and the beliefs or practices of ancient paganism. This fallacy is frequently committed by Fundamentalists against Catholics, by Seventh-Day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, and others against both Protestants and Catholics, and by atheists and skeptics against both Christians and Jews.
The nineteenth century witnessed a flowering of this "pagan influence fallacy." Publications such as

This document is posted as a reference background to several other documents in preparation, for want of any other easily accessible resource that I can find on the net or elsewhere. My main interest is in the logic of communication. I have already posted a document on this site delineating the problems with Aristotelian logic . Much of the power of Rome, and much other political power, rests upon the misuse and misunderstanding engendered by the weaknesses of categorical Aristotelian logic. These problems permeate and debilitate western culture. Concurrently, I am preparing several documents on Abelard and his analysis of logic and documents on the imperatives of real politic in a backward culture. This document is designed as a real-world exemplar context. I shall update this document if I have the resources to investigate in more detail. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ORTHODOXY AND ROMAN CATHOLICISM?
    By Father Michael Azkoul
St. Catherine Mission, St. Louis, MO
Reproduced with permission from The Orthodox Christian Witness, Vol. XXVII (48), Vol. XXVIII (6) and (8), 1994.
May not be reproduced without permission This question has been asked many times. Most Orthodox, in attempting to distinguish between Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism, usually mention the Pope or Purgatory, sometimes the filioque. Historically, the differences, however, are far more numerous and quite profound. Also, in modern times, since Vatican II of thirty years ago, that major, if not tragic attempt, to "update" Roman Catholicism (e.g., the revision of canon law), the differences between Orthodoxy and the followers of the Pope have widened. In our present discussion, however, the concern will be those differences which have grown since Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism separated almost a thousand years ago. 1. Faith and Reason Following the Holy Fathers, Orthodoxy uses science and philosophy to defend and explain her Faith. Unlike Roman Catholicism, she does not build on the results of philosophy and science. The Church does not seek to reconcile faith and reason. She makes no effort to prove by logic or science what Christ gave His followers to believe. If physics or biology or chemistry or philosophy lends support to the teachings of the Church, she does not refuse them. However, Orthodoxy is not intimidated by man's intellectual accomplishments. She does not bow to them and change the Christian Faith to make it consistent with the results of human thought and science.

Lecture 16 Catholicism in Nineteenth Century America As we have already seen, the second half of the nineteenth century was a time of testing for American Christianity, particularly Protestant Evangelicalism. Not only was it challenged by changes in the intellectual, political, and economic environments, it also had to face the difficult realization that it was no longer the dominant religion of the nation. While the rapidly increasing numbers of Jews drove home the point America was no longer an exclusively Christian nation, the steady flow of Roman Catholic immigrants soon meant that Catholics were the largest single denomination in the United States. But if Protestant Evangelicals took some time to acclimate themselves to the loss of their hegemony, it also took a considerable period for the Catholic Church to put down roots in America, and to come to terms with the unique demands of this new culture. Immigration, Persecution, and Divisiveness Like Judaism, Catholicism was not seen as a threat to the Protestant project in the early years of the nineteenth century. In 1790, there were only 30,000 Catholics in the entire country, but 40 years latter that number had grown to 600,000. When the first Provincial Council of Catholic Bishops was held in Baltimore in 1829, it served to reveal to non-Catholic Americans that the church was, to use Sydney Ahlstrom's description, a "substantial, growing, and well organized reality."

    Roman Catholicism: A Biblical Analysis
    By: Brian Schwertley
    Edited by: Stephen Pribble
There are two types of religion in the world today: religions of the imagination (what men and demons have made up) and the religion of revelation (what God by His grace has given to man in the Bible). The purpose of this booklet is to examine some important Roman Catholic doctrines in the light of the Bible and determine if these doctrines are in harmony with, or contrary to, the clear teaching of God’s Word. Because the Roman Catholic Church believes (as does the author) that the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God, all good Roman Catholics should study the Bible for themselves and abide by its teachings. As Pope Pius XII stated, “To ignore the Scripture is to ignore Christ.” Authority. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the Bible and tradition as interpreted by the Church are the final seat of authority in religion. Jesus condemned tradition as a rule for religious authority and exalted the Word of God: “The Pharisees and Scribes asked him, ‘Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients...?’ But answering he said to them, ‘...in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine the precepts of men. For letting go the commandment of God, you hold fast the tradition of men.... Well do you nullify the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition.... You make void the commandment of God by your tradition’” (Mk. 7:5-13 DB).

The Roman Catholic Church is part of the Christian Church ruled by the Bishop of Rome (the Pope). In the early Church the papacy exercised authority over all Christians. In about 575 a monk called Gregory saw some young men in the Rome slave-market. He spoke to them and discovered that these men were from England. After talking to these slaves he was shocked to discover that there were very few Christians living in England. Gregory was determined to change this situation and when he became Pope he sent his friend Augustine and forty monks to England to convert the inhabitants to Christianity. Augustine arrived in England in 596. He made his way to Canterbury, the home of King Ethelbert. Within a few weeks Augustine had converted Ethelbert and most of his household to Christianity. Pleased by his success, the following year Pope Gregory appointed Augustine as

    THE INTEGRATION
    OF ROMAN CATHOLICISM
    INTO VODOU IN HAITI
    By
    Dar Shvueli
May 2000 In this paper I will attempt to bring forth the different ways in which the Roman Catholic church has influenced and has been integrated into the vodou religion in the Caribbean island of Haiti. Though the two religions hold very different beliefs and oppose each other at their very core , they have been coexisting in Haiti for 500 years. Throughout the turmoil this island has seen, the two religions interacted in such ways that they both became unique. History of Vodou Vodou is based on west African religions. It was brought to the new world from countries such as Kongo, along with the enslaved Africans at the very beginning of the 16th century. In different forms, similar religions can still be found today in countries such as Benin, where the Fon religion is largely practiced. Literally the word vodu or vodun can be translated as "deity" or "Spirit". Vodou is more than just a religion - it is a way of life. It encompasses everything from folk art and folk stories, to medicine practices and ethics. Followers of vodou do not have to sign up as members of a certain church or temple. Rather, it is a religion that is part of everyday life. There are of course as can be found in most other religions, rituals and ceremonies to accompany major changes in life such as birth and death. However, the essence of this religion follows it’s believers in their daily tasks. History of Catholicism in Haiti
