On Easter Sunday, after being dead and buried three days,
Jesus Christ rises at dawn's first light with His banner of victory.
At His right, the soldiers sleep and the trees are bare.
At His left, a guard is awakening and the trees are in bud.
The world is being renewed. My hope is to use these Catholicism pages both to highlight the many interesting links I have found on the web and to raise and debate a number of topics that fascinate me, but seem rarely - if ever - addressed elsewhere. I would also like to have some pages devoted to books I have enjoyed reading and to various passages from the Bible I find challenging. Nowadays it is a commonplace to hear that most Catholics no longer know of, let alone believe in

PAGAN SUN WORSHIP AND CATHOLICISM
THE MONSTRANCE and the WAFER GOD
Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: ... Note that the commandment of God forbids making and bowing down to images. Among pagans, perhaps the most common form of idolatry is sun worship, and the above prohibition would clearly exclude bowing down before images of the sun or moon (things in the heaven above). But then God gets even more explicit: Deu 17:2 If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant,
Deu 17:3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
Deu 17:4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and inquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:

Catholicism and the Old South
By Gary Potter
My Children, Father, Thy forgiveness need;
Alas! their hearts have only place for tears!
Forgive them, Father, ev'ry wrongful deed,
And every sin of those four bloody years;
And give them strength to bear their boundless loss,
And from their hearts take every thought of hate;
And while they climb their Calvary with their Cross,
Oh! help them, Father, to endure its weight.
The Prayer of the South Following the War Between the States (1861-65), Jefferson Davis, President of the defeated Confederate States of America, was imprisoned with a view to his being tried for treason on account of his leadership role in the South's effort to make of itself an independent nation. Two years later, however, he was released and went into exile in Montreal (in Catholic Quebec) and then wandered in Europe before returning to these shores to spend his final days in his home state of Mississippi. His release came after a finding by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Salmon P. Chase, that there was nothing in the U.S. Constitution that prohibited the secession of states. If secession was not illegal, neither Davis nor any other Confederate leaders could be guilty of treason. inside his cell in order to deprive him of all privacy, including even at the times every day when nature required that he take care of the most private needs of all.

About this site The Dispute: Overviews The Dispute: Specifics Gateways and Official Websites ... Other Welcome to Orthodoxy and Catholicism: A Comprehensive Guide to Issues and Materials. On this site I have attempted to bring together all the material I could find about relations between the Catholic and Orthodox churches. You will find overviews of all the issues that separate the two sides, church documents, discussion groups, news and so forth. There are currently over 200 links I have tried to be impartial in every way I can think of. My occasional topic introductions attempt to reproduce what a committee of well-meaning experts from both sides would agree to. In describing the links I have aimed to keep my religious opinions separate from my duty to find and describe the material. Occasionally I describe something as "poorly-written" or "tedious"; these are not religious mistakes. Very occasionally I describe someting as "biased," when, for example, an author says that the other side believes something that no member of that side would agree to. I am not opposed to vigorous disagreement. I have, I am sure, missed important pages and made factual mistakes, particularly in categorization. Email and I will amend.

Evolution of the term "Catholicism"
As evident in the notion of "adherence to" the doctrines of the Christian faith, the Catholic Church, in English more than in Romance languages, is something of a disputed term which has several claimants. The claimants have in common an assertion that they represent the ancient undivided Christian faith , and differ on the practical meaning of "unity" within that faith. Over the centuries, within the Christian faith there arose disputes about the truths of the faith, and vocabulary evolved to reflect divergent viewpoints. "Catholic" and "Orthodox" are examples of such terms, each with a basic meaning
