Eberhard Arnold Download full PDF version of Eberhard Arnold's doctoral thesis on Friedrich Nietzsche's religious thought. Eberhard Arnold's doctoral thesis reveals a great deal about Friedrich Nietzsche's religious thought. But it reveals equally as much about Arnold's inner viewpoint in 1909. Nietzsche's philosophy, language, and thinking continued to concern Arnold even after he completed his doctorate. In the following years, traces of the great impression made on him by this eccentric and extraordinary thinker surfaced in his thought, speech, and action. Arnold agreed with Nietzsche that "the church's foundation is built upon the very opposite of the Gospels"; that the church is "a terrible hodgepodge of Greek philosophy and Judaism, of asceticism, of hierarchical order, etc." Further, he shared Nietzsche's view that originally Christianity "tolerated no connection with politics and state policies; it cannot in any way be a religion of the masses."

The Bruderhof: A Kindred Community
In 1920, radical Christian Eberhard Arnold founded the Bruderhof in war-torn Germany.
Today, nine Bruderhof communities - six in the eastern United States, two in England and one in Australia - are home to more than 3,000 members.
The basis of Bruderhof life is the Bible's New Testament teachings on love of neighbor, nonviolence, mutual service and faithfulness in marriage. The Bruderhof faith also encourages its members to maintain a childlike spirit.
The Bruderhof movement
is dedicated to the principle of unity. Instead of holding assets or property privately, members share everything in common.

He was twenty-two years old. Six months earlier, he had been diagnosed with the cancer, and his fellow Bruderhof members - some three thousand of them at nine communities in the US Britain , and Australia
Matt's story is the focus of a new book by Bruderhof author Daniel Hallock, Six Months to Live( Plough 2001). While it's true that cancer stories are hardly a rarity these days, this stirring account is a departure from the norm. Avoiding clichés ("Live every minute to the full." "Embrace life."), Six Months to Live instead explores the harsh reality of having to face one's mortality - and with it, the demons of uncertainty and fear. It does so with unusual intimacy and immediacy, by drawing on interviews with Matt's wife, parents, doctors, and friends, and on e-mails between Matt and others.
Most of us see the death of another person as something negative - something that unsettles us, interrupts our daily life, and throws our plans awry.

Bellvale Bruderhof Community
Bellvale Bruderhof Community Bruderhof movement as a whole was growing and straining the capacity of existing Bruderhof settlements. We considered how to expand in a manageable way, the idea being to move into existing campuses and buildings and use them as they were, with a minimum of renovation and construction. So properties were looked at with a view to their suitability for communal living and their readiness and availability to be moved into and lived in at short notice. We also reminded ourselves that in a small community we get to know each other better, so there was no need for a new Bruderhof to accommodate up to 400 people, as some of our existing communities do. We also felt that our standard of living at the Bruderhof could stand some tempering; we decided that the new venture should start with the minimum of trappings and material goods, such as household amenities, conveniences, and vehicles, and that use should be made of equipment and goods other Bruderhof communities could donate to the new effort. We remembered that our original German , British and South American Bruderhof communities, in the first half of the 20th century, were quite poor.

sss In 1920, Eberhard Arnold , a well-known lecturer and writer. Left the security of his Berlin career and moved with his wife and children to Sannerz , a tiny German village, to found a small community based on New Testament teachings particularly the Sermon on the Mount. (Matt 5-7)as practiced by the early Christian church. His vision of a new social order, an order of unity, love, peace and community is the cornerstone for the bruderhof movement. Today, the Bruderhof (the name translates as "place of brothers") is a Christian community movement with over three thousand members on three continents. Members still adhere to the Arnold's original vision for a life of radical Christianity where nonviolence, service to others, prayer, and fellowship are a natural part of every day. Eberhard Arnold, circa 1920 h Because the Bruderhof was seen as a 'social alternative', it attracted many like-minded people. It was here that the Bruderhof faced severe opposition by the Nazis who eventually forced the community out of the country because of the members strong beliefs For more information: Eberhard Arnold

The Beech Grove Bruderhof Darvell Bruderhof Bruderhof communal movement here The Peace Garden at the Beech Grove Bruderhof is a popular local attraction. In 1997, the area behind the Beech Grove School was a tangle of nettles and giant stumps. Today it has grown and blossomed into a garden for peace. Sculptures, trees, a splashing waterfall, flowerbeds and sparkling tear-drop mirrors remind us of the many places where peace is still needed. Five years ago a peace delegation passed through the Beech Grove Bruderhof and told the children about a "garden for peace" that they had seen in Israel. The children decided they should do something for peace. Perhaps they could make a garden, too. Soon they were writing thousands of letters asking about peace. "What is peace?" "How do you think peace will come on this earth?" The letters began coming back in from people from around the world. Often a letter would inspire the Bruderhof school children to design part of the garden to represent that conflict in that part of the world. The Bruderhof students with their families and teachers began clearing the land chosen, leaving the huge beautiful beech trees standing.

Member Stories
Being a Bruderhof member myself, I grew up hearing these stories. Often on a summer night, we'd meet together with all the members of the community. After a few songs about courage and faithfulness, we'd stretch out our legs and somebody would start telling about how they found the Bruderhof. What struck me again and again the diversity of the backgrounds. There were Jews, Gentiles, Protestants, Catholics, Atheists and Evangelicals... you name it. And all these people felt called to pursue a life of sharing together.
Bruderhof Family
The essence of the Bruderhof life is not the property, the buildings, the land etc. Not even in the church services or the order of the church itself. Rather it exists in the hearts of the people. That is why I thought there would be no better way to convey the what is deepest on our own hearts than to make these stories available for everybody to read. So click away!

thingy Frank Copeland The Bruderhof is a christian sect that started in Germany in the 1920s before moving to Paraguay in the 1930s to avoid Nazi rule. From there it moved to the United States. Internal conflicts have led to many defections, and ex-members critical of the authoritarian leadership of the sect have formed a group called the Peregrine Foundation The Bruderhof is currently engaged in two seperate attempts to use strongarm litigation tactics to limit criticism on the net. In doing so it appears to be following the same self-destructive path as the so-called Church of Scientology , whose attempts to silence critics have simply resulted in one public relations disaster after another.

On 4 June 1997 Bill Peters posted a control message to create the Usenet newsgroup alt.support.bruderhof . They demanded, in effect, that Bill shut down the newsgroup. This isn't the first time that a corporation with a public relations problem has sought to silence its critics by shutting down the forum they use for their discussions. We lovehate work. My father was writing and directing movies for the National Film Board of Canada in 1953 when he started to think more about this. A professor at McGill University had conducted a study of a washing machine assembly plant in New York State. The plant owner installed an assembly conveyor to set (and hasten) the cadence of the assembly process, and thus cut assembly costs. The professor from McGill heard about this and requested the owner's permission to study the impact of the conveyor on the lives of the workers. The owner was an open-minded person, and permitted the study. Dad read it and saw the skeleton of a movie. So he, too, contacted the plant owner. "Sure," the man said, "we're only running two shifts. The plant is yours from 10 till 6 every night. Bring in your actors." This was at the height of the Red Scare, and Dad was an avowed socialist. Actors were hired, the movie was shot, the sound track was recorded, and the movie, Men at Work

The song was, "We are not under law but under grace" and we handed out instruments to everyone that could play and drilled it until everyone knew it cold. When we were done, spontaneous applause broke out when we realized that we had learned something new together. At the evening meal, we marched through the dining room clapping and singing it. The third thing that brought us together were the two dances that we did during supper on Saturday. The first was to the Yiddish song Hava Nagila which was sung live. The second was to an Iraqi tune that was played from a tape. Everyone got up and danced through the aisles between the tables. In some cases there were three lines between two tables and out in the kitchen we had 4 lines between the wall and the dishwasher. Seeing all ages and personalities dancing the same simple steps and having no one sitting out was a great experience.
