Emmy Arnold was the co-founder of the Bruderhof Communities. She and her husband, Eberhard, began their Christian community in 1920, in their native Germany, after reading Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and determining his words were meant for today as much as for two thousand years ago. Today, the Bruderhof (the name translates as "place of brothers") is a Christian community movement with over two thousand members on three continents. Members still adhere to the Arnold's original vision for a life of radical Christianity where nonviolence, service to others, prayer, and fellowship are a natural part of every day. You can find more stories of people who joined the Bruderhof here . In this chapter from her memoir

Bankrott

The Bruderhof: A Kindred Community
In 1920, radical Christian Eberhard Arnold founded the Bruderhof in war-torn Germany.
Today, nine Bruderhof communities - six in the eastern United States, two in England and one in Australia - are home to more than 3,000 members.
The basis of Bruderhof life is the Bible's New Testament teachings on love of neighbor, nonviolence, mutual service and faithfulness in marriage. The Bruderhof faith also encourages its members to maintain a childlike spirit.
The Bruderhof movement
is dedicated to the principle of unity. Instead of holding assets or property privately, members share everything in common.

Childhood is threatened like never before. Everyone who cares about children knows that they are growing up in a hostile world. Callousness and indifference, corporate exploitation, constant pressure to excel, families in crisis, bankrupt schools, moral confusion, mind-numbing entertainment, and a poisoned environment are all robbing children of a chance to enjoy a carefree, happy childhood. You're not the only one who feels this way. This website is for anyone who believes children need and deserve time and space simply to be children, free from the pressures and influences that await them in our success-driven, image-conscious, materialistic, technological age. Are kids being drugged into submission?
Perspectives Peter Breggin, a pediatrician who wrote the book Talking Back to Ritalin, more Jeff writes: Jerome, an eight-year-old from Seattle, came and stayed with us last summer for a break from the city. When he arrived he was a mess, though he was on Ritalin. After two or three days, however, we weaned him off his dose, because with all the room to play he was no longer bouncing off the walls, but beginning to take himself in hand. more Charlene says Ritalin worked for her son, but she's glad she stopped. Her story:
From the minute of his early arrival into the world, my fourth child seemed to be one ceaseless motion of eating and crying, all mouth and thrusting extremities. Michael slept well, at inappropriate times, rarely at night.
Michael never walked. At eleven months he ran. And climbed. And threw. And hit. more

She Said Yes
The Unlikely Martyrdom of Cassie Bernall
Misty Bernall
Other languages:
en español

The powerful New York Times bestseller In the years that have passed since the Columbine High School massacre of April 1999, almost everyone seems to have heard of Cassie Bernall, the student who, after affirming her belief in God, was shot and killed by two crazed classmates. She answered with a Yes - and that single word echoed around the globe. Still, Cassie's parents knew only too well that behind the image of the picture-perfect saint portrayed by the news media was a teenager who worried about her weight, her grades, and her chances of finding a boyfriend. She Said Yes is a story of growing up in the suburbs, of peer pressure, adolescent turmoil, and the tough choices parents make. It is the story of a mother's loss - of dreams and hopes dashed by the cruel reality of death at an early age. But it is also a story of redemption more enduring than the tragedy that cut a young life short. Once a rage-filled young woman who walked a path similar to that of her killers, Cassie found a way out of her personal snares and, through her faith and a family's love, chose to embrace life with courage and conviction.

38. New Meadow Run Bruderhof Community In Farmington, Pennsylvania
The New Meadow Run bruderhof in Farmington, Pennsylvania is one of more than ten bruderhof communities worldwide.
http://www.newmeadowrunbruderhof.com
New Meadow Run Bruderhof
The New Meadow Run Bruderhof community is one of eleven Bruderhof communities worldwide. In 1957, the Bruderhof needed to establish a new community in the United States to accommodate members moving from Bruderhof communities in the backwoods of Paraguay, South America, where the Bruderhof had been eking out a meager existence for 15 years since fleeing Europe during World War II. On June 2, 1957 the papers for the purchase of Gorley's Lake Hotel were signed. This property was located in the wooded foothills of Chestnut Ridge in southwestern Pennsylvania, a lakefront hotel along US Route 40 (known as the "National Pike") near Fort Necessity National Battlefield. July 20 marked the establishment of Oak Lake Bruderhof. Spring Valley Bruderhof , founded in 1990 and also located in Farmington, Pennsylvania. Until 1965, the property, buildings, and lake remained practically unchanged. But by summer of that year, the hotel had become unbearable to live in. Members scarcely needed to set foot outside during the day; their homes, school, workplaces and communal dining hall and meeting room were all in the same enormous building. Besides, further development of the Bruderhof was impossible, as the lake occupied most of the property. So to rid Oak Lake Bruderhof of the "hotel" atmosphere, the main building was drastically remodeled, the lake was completely drained, the lakebed landscaped and developed, and the Bruderhof renamed New Meadow Run.

Dial up $14.95 or NetZero Internet Service $9.95 In his latest book, Endangered: Your Child in a Hostile World , author Johann Christoph Arnold contends that rule-breaking children make the most self-reliant and independent adults. He should know - Arnold, who lives at the Woodcrest Bruderhof , a Christian community where members seek to put their faith in action through service to others, prayer, and fellowship, is a pastor and youth counsellor with years of experience. In Endangered, he voices his concern for a culture that is fast alienating - if not annihilating - its own children and young people. "In Praise of Black Sheep" is a chapter from Endangered. Visit www.bruderhof.com for more. Discuss this issue and more at the Bruderhof Saving Childhood Forum There's a black sheep in every flock, and there are few of us who don't know one, or didn't know one as a child. Every family, every class, has one: that brother or sister, boy or girl, who's always in trouble, who's prone to stretch limits or take things "too far," who's embarrassingly honest, who never fits in. It's that child over whom every teacher puzzles longest and every parent loses the most sleep.
