Spiritual Roots
In first-century Jerusalem, The Bruderhof movement draws inspiration and guidance from these historical streams.
History
The Bruderhof began Dr. Eberhard Arnold , a well-known public speaker, left the comforts of Berlin and moved to the tiny village of Sannerz with his wife and children. Here they sought to flesh out their vision of a society in which love and justice replace violence, isolation, and greed. Neighboring Liechtenstein offered temporary refuge but could not permanently protect the Bruderhof from the threat of Nazism. Fortunately, an influx of British guests opened doors in England, and the community was able to purchase a derelict farm in the Cotswolds and relocate there.

North America has seen an explosion of new area codes over the last eight years, fueled by increased demand for numbers (modems, fax, wireless) and competition in local telephone service. To meet this growing demand for numbers, the North American Numbering Plan was amended in 1995 to permit area codes with middle digits other than or 1. As a result, millions of phone numbers have moved to new area codes in recent years. This site contains a collection of lists of telephone exchanges involved in area code splits. Each entry below links you to a detailed list of telephone exchange codes (NXX) which will be, or have already been, moved to a new area code (NPA). This is not intended to be a master list of all area codes, or even of all new area codes. I generally do not include overlays , where a new area code is introduced which covers the same area as an existing area code. In such cases, no telephone numbers change. I have listed a few of the more confusing multiple overlays and combination split/overlays, though they may not exactly fit the criteria of number changes.

The Bruderhof as we know it today is an international movement of Christian communities. It was founded in Germany in 1920 by Eberhard Arnold and a handful of likeminded friends. The Bruderhof is not a religion; rather, it is a gathering place for people (men and women of all ages, single or married) serious about communal living in the context of the Christian faith The Bruderhof is patterned after the radical Christian communities of the sixteenth-century Anabaptists and the early Christians of the first century. Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" forms the basis for our communal life. Bruderhof members make a life commitment to pacifism, prayer, work and fellowship. Daily forgiveness is an integral part of Bruderhof life . Read stories of Bruderhof members here. Visit the website of the Bruderhof: www.bruderhof.com More Bruderhof Sites

    Woodcrest Bruderhof Community
The Woodcrest Bruderhof community, the Bruderhof movement's first American settlement, was founded in 1954 in a small town called Rifton, New York, an hour and a half north of New York City. In the preceding years, several Bruderhof members went on mission and fund-raising trips to North America from the Bruderhof communities in Paraguay. In the United States they met many men and women interested in intentional communities and eager to hear about life in community at the Bruderhof. Several made the long trip down to Paraguay to visit the Bruderhof there. At a July 1953 conference in Paraguay, the Bruderhof decided to start a Bruderhof community in North America. Woodcrest was purchased in June 1954, and was immediately flooded with guests and new members. Many came from Quaker and Brethren backgrounds. People from intentional communities like Koinonia, founded by Clarence Jordan, Macedonia Cooperative, Kingwood, and Celo joined the Woodcrest Bruderhof community, too. Charles E. Moore
Ten years ago, my wife and I packed up our bags to join a Christian community, the Bruderhof a fellowship of men, women, and children who live, work, and share a common purse and a common life together. By "community" I mean a gathered life involving a total commitment to each other. Our homes, work place, community center, and school are all together in one geographic space. We possess no private property and share daily life together. Why would I, a seminary professor, and my wife, a high school teacher, drop everything and move across the country to join the Bruderhof, an intentional Christian community ? We were both well on our way to a fulfilling and fruitful life of meaningful work. So why the change? In short, because we were living a slow death of gradual disintegration. As for myself, the explosive energy of my youth had fast become dissipated, not because of reckless living, but as a result of obsessively attempting too much and of trying to hold everything together. It was a meltdown of my own choosing. I was obsessed with trying hard, being good, meeting needs, pleasing God, and doing the right thing. There were so many good causes to join, so much knowledge to master, so many people to meet, so many relationships to build, so many obligations to fulfill, and so many opportunities to explore. But as I plunged into the whirlwind of possibility, I became systematically fragmented. Peace of heart slipped away, peace of life was lost.
