The debate was the culmination of a controversy that began in the 1930s, following the discovery that Eric James Roberts, a fellow student with Shearer in the early days of the Scottish college, and a close friend of Holms Coats, was a Unitarian. (2) Shearer was convinced that the dangers of Modernism had affected the Scottish college from the beginning of its existence, through its close ties with the University of Glasgow, and that men like Roberts and Holms Coats who had studied at Mansfield College, Oxford, and Marburg in Germany had accepted the theological perspectives of German Rationalism. (3) John Shearer Shearer was born in Glasgow on August 20, 1874, the great, great grandson of Flora MacDonald, the companion of Bonnie Prince Charlie in the '45 rebellion. Shearer was converted and baptized in 1890, eventually becoming a member of John Street Baptist Church in Glasgow, where his grandfather had been one of the pastors. (4) Shortly afterwards, Shearer and his parents moved their membership to Queens Park Baptist Church. In 1892, his father, William Shearer, became the pastor of Kelso Baptist Church in the Scottish Borders. (5) Although John Shearer accompanied his parents to Kelso, lack of employment opportunities led him to return to Glasgow to stay with an aunt in Cowcaddens and join the South Side Baptist Church (6) in the Gorbals, (7) where John McLean, a great friend of the family, was pastor. The Baptist Faith Introduction An Introduction to the Baptist Faith The Baptist Family Individual Church Members Local Baptist Churches ... The Worldwide Family An Introduction to the Baptist Faith Baptists are radicals in the sense that they believe in returning to the roots of Christian faith ( note that the English word 'radical' comes from the Latin word 'radix' which means root). This means that they seek to root their life together in the Biblical pattern of being the church. Unlike the great state churches of Europe - Anglican, Lutheran and reformed - Baptists have always emphasised the need for personal faith. Instead of baptising babies, Baptists have reserved baptism for those who are able to make a personal confession of Jesus as Lord and Saviour. In the 16th Century when the modern Baptist movement was born, this emphasis on personal faith was perceived as a threat to the state church, to which all were expected to belong, with or without faith. In 17th Century England, Baptists refused to conform and be members of the Church of England, arguing that Christ, and not the King (or Queen), was head of the church. Baptists have been described as 'Dissenters' or 'nonconformists' - they stand in the 'Free Church' tradition. Persecuted for their beliefs throughout the 17th Century, Baptists at one stage developed into two 'streams' of theological thought: the 'General' Baptists believed that when Christ died on the cross, He died for everyone in 'general'; the 'Particular' Baptists, however, believed that Christ died for the 'elect' i.e. a 'particular' group of people. Later these two streams came together to form the present Baptist Union of Great Britain.

The Question of Freemasonry
by Harmon R. Taylor
INTRODUCTION
The question of the Christian stand regarding Freemasonry seems to confront our ministry at every turn lately. I have had to come to grips with the sad fact that the esoteric doctrines of Freemasonry separate it, just as unequivocally as do those of Mormonism, from Christian theology. This holds true for every branch of Masonry from the Shriners to the Blue Lodge, the Eastern Star, Demolay, Job's Daughters and the Rainbow Girls! It holds true for the Scottish rite or York rite!

Baptist churches are found in almost every country in the world. As part of the worldwide Christian church, Baptists form one of the largest families of faith, alongside other trinitarian Christian traditions such as Anglicans, Methodists, Reformed, etc.
For Baptists the concept of a family is important. The church is not so much a particular place or building, but rather a family of believers, committed to Christ, to one another and to the service of God in the world.
In this Baptist family everybody is equal, for everybody has a part to play in the service of God. There is no hierarchy of bishops or priests exercising authority over their members. Equality of status, however, does not mean that all have the same role. Each local Baptist church appoints its own leaders - or ministers - to have particular responsibility for preaching, teaching and pastoral care. Workings alongside these ministers are also deacons, who together with the minister(s) form the leadership team of the local Baptist church.
Baptists are grass-roots people, with a particular emphasis on the local church. These local churches are self-governing and self-supporting, ranging in size from twenty or so members to many hundreds. Although each Baptist church is an independent entity, Baptist nonetheless have always believed in associating with one another - and so the churches come together in regional, national and international spheres to promote and support the fellowship of Baptists everywhere.

PROLOGUE: The Early Story of the Baptists in Dundee
CBC - Short History of Ward Road Baptist Church
early story of the Baptists in Dundee is lost in the mists of uncertainty. Here and there the vapour thins a little and a vague outline of what is taking place can be discerned; but presently the veil falls again and the outline is lost until it once more emerges and takes definite form. From an article upon Rattray Street Baptist Church, appearing in the Scottish Baptist Magazine of May 1917, the following interesting account of the beginnings of the denomination in the town are culled. " In 1769, some persons who resided in Dundee, went to Edinburgh to be baptised, and strongly solicited Mr. Carmichael, one of the pastors, to go and preach in Dundee as there was a prospect of considerable success. He accordingly went, and during his stay, baptised several. Later on he settled as pastor, Mr. Thomas Boswell being associated with him in office. Mr. Boswell died after only three years' service, and two years later, Mr. Carmichael returned to Edinburgh in failing health, where he died in 1774."

Baptists in the Ecumenical Context
A paper presented by Faith Bowers of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church London to the BWA Congress Heritage Commission Focus Group
6 January 2000 In Adelaide just before Christmas we went to a musical play, `Two from Galilee', about Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus. It was described as `a ministry project of the Rostrevor Baptist Church'. Staged at the university, it had a cast of 45, plus a further 30 in the crew, drawn from 25 Christian bodies - six more Baptist churches, and others from right across the Christian spectrum from the Christian Revival Crusade to Roman Catholic. A cast member told us the next Sunday how they all prayed together for forty minutes before each performance, chiefly that some in the audience would be moved to respond to the Gospel. Here were Baptists in the ecumenical context - working happily with other Christians to spread the Gospel. I come from England, where ecumenism is in a fairly advanced state. The primary ecumenical drive was a concern for mission and Baptists therefore felt it was right to join with others to that end. English Baptists have long co-operated with other mainstream Protestant dissenters and with many Anglicans. In 1948 the BUGB (Baptist Union of Great Britain) Secretary, M.E. Aubrey, was one of the committee of fourteen that drafted the WCC constitution, as a forum for discussion, communication and joint witness.
