THE QUESTION RAISED
For several years past certain members of our churches have expressed disquiet concerning the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and the possible influence of the movement within some churches. The matter has been raised on several occasions in recent Assemblies and has been the subject of correspondence in the Scottish Baptist Magazine. Although we have little direct evidence that this constitutes as serious and widespread problem in Scottish Baptist Churches, the Council considered the matter carefully and originally agreed that the Doctrine and Inter-Church Relations core groups should review available literature and compile a document directing churches to sources of information, where it was felt guidance was needed. However, there were those who felt sufficiently strongly about the question to continue to press the Council for firmer action, and at the Council meeting of January 1987 it was agreed to appoint a group to study the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and to publish their findings in the form of a Viewpoint booklet. They do this in the conviction that our people need clear guidance in this area.

Website Administration
The website for the Baptist Union of Scotland is administered by several people at different levels both internally within the Baptist Union of Scotland, and also externally. There are key areas of administrative responsibilty for the website that can be broken down as follows:
Content Provision
Much of the content of the website reflects the activity of thousands of people who collectively form the group of Baptist churches in Scotland that forms the Union. As such the content although perhaps edited/published from a core network within the Union is essentially a website published by Baptists, but for the whole world to witness.
Editorial control and publication
The editorial control and publication of information at the website "http://www.scottishbaptist.org.uk" is administered by a team of people who form a core network within the Union. Essentially this team sits between the internal organisation of the Baptist Union of Scotland and the rest of the world that forms the Internet. It is this team that facilitates communication both internally and externally. Part of the editorial controls involve approval and authentication procedures which are only made available via part of the Online Intranet
Design and Implementation
Much of the design and implementation for this website has been co-oridinated by Keith Duncan and Richard Tuckley.

There are several views of the history of Baptists. One is that there has been a group of people who

On March 26, 1707, the Kingdom of Scotland merged with the Kingdom of England to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, which eventually became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Baptist Union of Scotland
Baptist Union of Scotland Baptist churches of Scotland Baptists first arrived in Scotland in the 1650s, but their opposition to Oliver Cromwell , as well as stiff opposition to the Baptists by the Reformers and the Scottish Parliament, brought about their demise. The movement would resurface later in two streams. The first stream includes the work of William Sinclair, beginning in Keiss in , and that of Robert Carmichael and Archibald McLean in Edinburgh in . This stream was called Scotch Baptists , and were very conservative strict Calvinists . This stream was called English Baptists , and were more moderate and less Calvinistic. After overcoming initial hostilities, these groups were able to unite in 1869. The Baptist Union of Scotland was founded in by 51 Churches, comprising about 3,500 members. The purpose of the Union is to provide mutual support, train ministers, engage in evangelical outreach and publish literature. There are currently ( ) 170 churches in the Union, with around 15,000 members. Headquarters are in

They do this in the conviction that our people need clear guidance in this area. Membership of the group comprised four members of the Doctrine and Interchurch Relations core group, plus four others, under the chairmanship of Rev. A.T. Peck. It was intended that two might be sympathetic towards the Freemasons and two against. From the outset, we were unable to discover anyone within or outside our churches who would be willing to put the Freemasons point of view within the group. We had to depend mainly on published accounts of the principles and practices of Freemasonry. A good deal of material is available both from Masonic sources and also from writers critical of the movement. The major standard encyclopedias also carry useful articles. Some of the books listed in an appendix contain extensive quotations from Masonic literature. We found it somewhat paradoxical that although so much of their practice and ritual is shrouded in secrecy and protected by secret signs, so much is available in various publications, some from Masonic sources.
