The Baptist Faith Introduction An Introduction to the Baptist Faith The Baptist Family Individual Church Members Local Baptist Churches ... The Worldwide Family An Introduction to the Baptist Faith Baptists are radicals in the sense that they believe in returning to the roots of Christian faith ( note that the English word 'radical' comes from the Latin word 'radix' which means root). This means that they seek to root their life together in the Biblical pattern of being the church. Unlike the great state churches of Europe - Anglican, Lutheran and reformed - Baptists have always emphasised the need for personal faith. Instead of baptising babies, Baptists have reserved baptism for those who are able to make a personal confession of Jesus as Lord and Saviour. In the 16th Century when the modern Baptist movement was born, this emphasis on personal faith was perceived as a threat to the state church, to which all were expected to belong, with or without faith. In 17th Century England, Baptists refused to conform and be members of the Church of England, arguing that Christ, and not the King (or Queen), was head of the church. Baptists have been described as 'Dissenters' or 'nonconformists' - they stand in the 'Free Church' tradition. Persecuted for their beliefs throughout the 17th Century, Baptists at one stage developed into two 'streams' of theological thought: the 'General' Baptists believed that when Christ died on the cross, He died for everyone in 'general'; the 'Particular' Baptists, however, believed that Christ died for the 'elect' i.e. a 'particular' group of people. Later these two streams came together to form the present Baptist Union of Great Britain.

Baptists in the United Kingdom
The origins of the modern Baptist movement are to be found in the European radical reformation of the early sixteenth century.Small groups grew up known as Anabaptists. Amongst other things these early groups only baptized believers on confession of faith holding that this was the New Testament pattern. They believed in the separation of church and state, religious liberty, and almost all were avowedly pacifist. In the early years of the seventeenth century a small group of people left the oppression of Great Britain to seek religious freedom in Amsterdam. They formed themselves into a church under the leadership of John Smyth (c.1554 - 1612) and Thomas Helwys, here they came under the influence of churches in the Mennonite tradition (an Anabaptist group named after Menno Simons 1496 - 1561), receiving believers baptism. In 1611 Thomas Helwys led the group back from Holland. Helwys was the author of ‘The Mistery of Iniquity’, the first English printed book to plead for full religious freedom. In this work Helwys argued for state and religion to be separated and argued for freedom of religion for all, specifically including in this Islamic, Judaic, and atheistic belief. The successors of Helwys and his friends became known as the General Baptists. They were Arminian in theology and their church order was independent, with the appointment of inter-congregational officials known as ‘Messengers’.In 1633 a group connected with a Calvinistic Separatist church in London broke away on adopting believer’s baptism. This was the origin of the Particular Baptists. They remained Calvinistic in theology but their church order was of the independent type.

Membership of the Society embraces a wide range of interests including ministers and church leaders, church members, tutors and lecturers, local church historians as well as institutions such as universities, libraries and theological colleges. One important aim of the Society is to make widely available material about Baptist history written by Baptists. There is a constant need to consider the way in which Baptist principles have been rooted in practice in the lives of women and men. One way this is achieved is through the Quarterly magazine and another through our range of publications. Seven volumes of Transactions and thirty-six volumes of the Baptist Quarterly with cumulative indices have been published. Welcome People Events Journal ... 18 May 1999 WCC DIRECTOR MYRA BLYTH FIRST WOMAN APPOINTED TO SENIOR STAFF POSITION IN THE BAPTIST UNION
OF GREAT BRITAIN

The Baptist Union of Great Britain has appointed Myra Blyth (42), director of the World Council of Churches' (WCC) Cluster on Relations, as its first female deputy general secretary. Myra Blyth was endorsed by delegates at the Union's Annual General Meeting in Bournemouth, England, on Wednesday, 28 April. Although the Baptist Union of Great Britain has recognised the ministry of women for many years, it is the first time a woman has been appointed to serve the Union in such a senior staff position. Myra Blyth will leave the WCC by the end of this year to take up her new position. WCC general secretary, Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser, congratulated Myra Blyth on her election: "It is the first time that a woman has been elected to this position - a clear recognition of her extraordinary leadership abilities. For the WCC and for me personally, her departure is a cause of sincere regret. Her vision and her commitment have left deep marks in the life of the WCC in this period of transition. We shall miss her. But her colleagues and friends look forward to seeing her bringing fresh impulses to the life of her own church and to ecumenical cooperation in the UK." Following training for Baptist ministry at Regent's Park College in Oxford, Myra Blyth was a minister at Sutton Baptist Church in Surrey between 1978 and 1982. In 1982 she was appointed executive youth secretary with the British Council of Churches. She joined the WCC in April 1988 as secretary for Europe in the department of Inter-Church Aid, Refugee and World Service (CICARWS). In March 1993 Myra Blyth was appointed executive director of Unit IV - Sharing and Service. She currently holds the position of the executive director for Relations in the WCC's new structure.
