THE QUESTION RAISED
For several years past certain members of our churches have expressed disquiet concerning the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and the possible influence of the movement within some churches. The matter has been raised on several occasions in recent Assemblies and has been the subject of correspondence in the Scottish Baptist Magazine. Although we have little direct evidence that this constitutes as serious and widespread problem in Scottish Baptist Churches, the Council considered the matter carefully and originally agreed that the Doctrine and Inter-Church Relations core groups should review available literature and compile a document directing churches to sources of information, where it was felt guidance was needed. However, there were those who felt sufficiently strongly about the question to continue to press the Council for firmer action, and at the Council meeting of January 1987 it was agreed to appoint a group to study the relationship between Freemasonry and Christianity and to publish their findings in the form of a Viewpoint booklet. They do this in the conviction that our people need clear guidance in this area.

There are 43 million Baptist Christians in 200 countries of the world and this five yearly Congress is an opportunity for as many of those as possible to join together for a life changing experience. Baptist Union of Great Britain
Council statement
Statement affirmed by the Baptist Union Council in response to the terrorist attacks of
11 September 2001 and to the bombing campaign begun in October 2001

As Baptists gathered together in Council, we reflected on the violence that has engulfed our world in recent weeks. We recalled the horrifying terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC on 11 September and the subsequent bombing campaign that has brought death and destruction to Afghanistan. We heard of the continuing conflict in the Middle East that is a source of bitter anger and deep injustice. We believe we are called to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, and so to make our response to these world events. * Our calling is to the task of prophetic peace making and justice seeking. We reject the cycle of violence that breeds hatred and revenge. We commit ourselves to search for the way of costly, risky peace making in obedience to the Prince of Peace. Evil must be answered by the just rule of law; fear and terror must be answered by the power of love. * Our calling is to a ministry of grieving. We weep with those who weep, sharing in lament for the pain of a world torn apart by terrorism and war. It is holy grief, declaring that things are not as they should be, and we believe that our grieving is the first step in allowing a new reality to come to birth by the Spirit of God.

Baptist Union of Great Britain Text of letter to the Prime Minister (20 September 2002) Dear Mr Blair Over the past year, there have been many of us within the Baptist Union of Great Britain who have welcomed the steps you have sought to take in order to create a global vision for justice and peace. As you said at the last Labour Party conference, we live in an interdependent world where isolationism is not an option. It is for this reason that we view with deep concern the threatened military action against Iraq. While it may be possible to produce evidence of the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, it is vital that a proper consensus be developed through the United Nations in order to determine the course of action that should be taken. We recognise that the regime in Iraq has no moral validity. However, we believe that the use of a pre-emptive strike by one sovereign state against another would be a serious breach of the United Nations Charter, setting a very dangerous precedent. We would also urge that the situation in Iraq be set in a wider context. If we bring yet further violence into this region of the world, it is our contention that this can only deepen the mistrust, divisions and hatred that already provide the breeding ground for terrorism. It must always be remembered that war is a sign of failure, bringing with it death and destruction, poverty and fear. Military conflict cannot address root injustices and inequalities, and cannot of itself result in a true peace and security for all.
