John Mark Ministries Priscillas Friends WWW Ex-pastors Bill: The Story Of An Australian Baptist Ex-Pastor Dear Rowley, I have not told my story to anyone before. I do so in recognition that it may add one more quiver to your bow in your targeting an area of real failure in the Christian church. We were invited to Baptist in 198. It was a traditional Baptist Church and had some lovely Christian people in the congregation. The church had just removed a Pastor 12 months prior the reasons for doing so was "confidential" to the Diaconate .He was one of a number of short term pastors that had come and gone from the church in recent years. The two elders: one a high profile missionary leader (with a spurious "doctorate" ) with a strong "image" paradigm, the other an administrator recently retired from Telstra with a major emphasis on tidy administration. The 'missionary' elder had became the Interim Pastor between pastoral appointments and was positioned with much influence in the life of the church. The diaconate consisted of mostly middle management males who had grown up in the church. Less than 25% of the congregation turned up for my induction and life began at . I sensed strong control from the leadership from the beginning and felt this was not a good place to be. The church allowed me to take time to upgrade my studies.I completed them in two years and was subsequently ordained.

CATHOLIC CARDINAL ADDRESSES THE BAPTIST UNION [The following is from the Australian Beacon, August 1998 (P.O. Box 88, Para Hills, 5096, South Australia)]
Cardinal Basil Hume made the first ever visit by a Roman Catholic archbishop to the Baptist Assembly in May. The
archbishop led the Baptists in their spiritual reflections and was present when newly-accredited ministers met the Baptist
Union president.
Rev. David Coffey, General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, spoke glowingly of the archbishop’s visit.
He said, "Baptists support the courageous moral stance that Cardinal Hume has taken on such issues as abortion,
euthanasia and the protection of the family, and they recognize the deep spirituality which undergirds his ministry. The
Assembly (was) delighted that the Cardinal was able to share with us on this occasion."
Sadly Mr. Coffey and the Union President Rev. Douglas McBain, whose friendship with Cardinal Hume instigated the
invitation, fail to understand the serious issues at the heart of this matter. It is sheer whitewash to recommend the
archbishop on the basis of his moral stand. We also applaud that stand, but it does not make Roman Catholicism any

DRAFT SEXUAL HEALTH STRATEGY: PLEASE RESPOND
In an attempt to reduce Scotland's high teenage pregnancy rate, the Scottish Executive recently published a draft sexual health strategy. The Health Minister, Malcolm Chisholm, is keen to have responses to the Draft Strategy 'from parents, young people, and individuals as well as those submitted by organizations and professionals bodies'. The Baptist Union would encourage churches, and individuals within churches, to respond to the strategy. The nature of these responses will contribute to the moral climate within which our children will grow up. You need not be a professional to respond. Being a parent, an aunt or uncle, a grandparent is qualification enough.

Easter Sunday and ministers of the cloth come to bless the Fremantle picket by candlelight.
Reverend Howard McCallum from Flying Angels calls for peace and justice on behalf of sacked waterside workers. The church choir sings 'The Internationale'.
Church leaders played a prominent role on the picket lines, holding regular Sunday services to provide spiritual support. Like the children playing in their crèche, the entertainers, artists and actors, it was in stark contrast to the dogs, the hooded guards, the helicopters and search lights, the confrontation and the war of words through the padlocked gates - as different as night and day.
"WA was the only state to use tactical response units against civilians," said assistant National Secretary Paddy Crumlin. "It was extraordinary stuff. At the same time, the port authority thumbed its nose at their own regulations by allowing helicopters to sweep in over the crowd onto the Patrick wharves, bringing in scabs and managers."
This soon stopped after towage workers took industrial action over safety concerns.

No to racism - Free the refugees
WE, the undersigned, are writing to protest the treatment of refugees seeking asylum in Australia. Under present Australian laws, these refugees fleeing intolerable circumstances are subjected to mandatory detention. In reality, those detention centres are medium security prisons. This is an unambiguous breach of United Nations' covenants and protocols concerning the treatment of asylum seekers-agreements to which Australia is a signatory. These laws mean that some refugees have spent years behind razor wire fences although they have committed no crime. Some children have known no other life than that in a detention centre. At Woomera, there is one phone for over 1400 refugees and in every detention centre refugees are living in inhuman conditions. Australia is the only industrialised nation in the world which detains asylum seekers in such a manner. Refugees have been subjected to a disgraceful campaign of vilification and scare-mongering by politicians. Despite the relatively small numbers (Australia accepts far fewer refugees than many smaller and poorer nations), terms such as "flood" and tidal wave" have been used to describe the arrival of refugees by boat. Refugees have been called "illegals", even though it is legal to request asylum and enjoy protection according to domestic and international law.

Meet Australia's Laughing Bird Meet the Writer of the Laughing Bird Liturgical Resources Australia's Laughing Bird - The Kookaburra Click on the pictures for enlargements We named our website after the Kookaburra because she seems to us to be Australia's natural symbol of the Holy Spirit. Why? Well, her call, which is the most unmistakable laugh of the whole bird world, fills the air with good humour, but can at the same time, be a call to humility - a rather sharp reminder of one's own absurdity. Furthermore, this is a bird that does battle with snakes, and usually wins. So, she is a symbol of the Spirit's power to spread joy and laughter, to remind people not to take themselves too seriously, and to confront and overcome forces of evil. For the ornothologists among you, there are actually two closely related species of Kookaburra. The two pictured on the left are Laughing Kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae) and the two on the right are Blue-winged Kookaburras (Dacelo leachii). The former has the more pronounced rollicking laugh. The latter has more of a coughing cackle. The two are sufficiently similar that they often interact in territorial behaviour as though they were the same species.
