The second minister at Canberra Baptist Church was Rev Hackworthy . Harold Hackworthy was born in Newcastle, and was educated at the Universities of Melbourne and Sydney, and Kings College and London in the UK, before attending Melbourne Baptist College (now Whitley College). His early pastorates were at several country towns in NSW, before seeing war service between 1914-1919. After the war he returned to the ministry, first at Ingleburn, NSW, then at South Yarra Baptist Church in Melbourne, Victoria. He went to England again and took the pastorate at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Burnley. On returning he became minister of the Darling Church, Melbourne and later went to Hobart, Tasmania and North Adelaide Baptist Church in South Australia. He was ordained minister of Canberra Baptist Church in 1948 where he remained until his retirement in 1952.

REVEREND J H GOBLE 1862-1932
"His life was a period of delightful ingenuousness, touching kindness and healing sympathy. His heart was overflowing with love and good cheer." - The Mail, Footscray, Saturday 6 February 1932.
W hen 240 delegates met at the Burton Street Baptist Tabernacle in Sydney on 25 August 1926 to form the Baptist Union of Australia, they unanimously elected Joseph Hunter Goble as the first President of the Union. He was the Minister of the Footscray Baptist Church and initially, along with Dr F W Norwood and later Rev Peter Fleming, he had played a major role in forging Baptist federation. It was the Baptist Union of Australia (BUA), under Rev Coble's leadership, that negotiated with the Commonwealth Government for a grant of land on which to build the first Baptist Church in the new federal capital. The BUA appointed Dr Waldock, who was to become the church's first Minister, to select the site and raise the funds to build the church and the manse. Rev Goble unveiled the church's foundation stone on 21 March 1928 and later officiated at the Canberra Baptist Church's opening ceremonies on the weekend of 23-24 February 1929. It is likely that few people who pause to read the foundation stone today will be aware of the remarkable and saintly man whose name is recorded thereon.

How Is The Church Organised ?
Becoming a Christian
We are an evangelical church. We believe the Bible to be God's inspired word for us. We look to the Bible to discover the mind of God and therefore our life values. We believe in the great biblical truth of the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The atoning death and resurrection of Jesus, salvation by faith through God's grace. For a full Statement Of Beliefs please click here
How is the Church organised?
The church is a group of people who have all made a personal commitment to Jesus. While every individual involved in the church is gifted for different roles we believe everyone is equal before God. The Holy Spirit is working within each Christian equipping, directing and encouraging. Each church member therefore has the ability and responsibility to listen for God's direction for themselves and the church.
Therefore Baptist churches organise themselves with the following points in mind:
  • Christ, not any particular individual, is the head of the church.

    Christianity – Protestantism
    Origins and History
During the Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church held a virtual monopoly of faith in Western Europe, but between the 14th and 17th Centuries there was a series of Northern European reforms, or protest movements, which led to the separation from Rome of what would become known as Protestant churches.
Preaching against the perceived excesses of the medieval church, including papal indulgences, reformers wished to reclaim the spiritual authority of the Christian religion, arguing that the true church was not defined in terms of a continuous tradition of ministry (the Catholic view), but in terms of continuity with the teaching of the Apostles. They defined a true church as one where the Word of God ruled, and where the only sacraments administered would be those which Christ administered – baptism and eucharist.
The founder of the German Reformation was Martin Luther (1483-1546), an Augustinian monk who nailed 95 propositions to the church door in Wittenberg, challenging contemporary church practice. He translated the Bible into vernacular German and developed the doctrine of justification by faith alone, where salvation occurs only through faith and not through individual good works or the intercession of any church. Luther’s theology remains the basis for the Lutheran churches today, who value theological study and emphasis the weekly sermon where the Word of God is preached.

(Samara was selected by the Women's Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist to attend their annual ACTEEN Conference in August 2003. Here are her insights!)
In August this year, 2003, I had the most amazing opportunity when I travelled to Nashville, Tennessee in the USA for the National Acteens Conference (NAC). NAC is held once every 5 years, for teen girls from all over the USA and its purpose is to encourage girls to be active about God’s work, in their local communities and also overseas. This year 6,500 teen girls from all over the USA attended NAC! However, it was a special conference for NAC because they decided to sponsor international girls to attend and represent their countries. Twenty girls were selected, from Ukraine, Spain, Thailand, New Zealand, Fiji, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Poland, Wales, France, Dominica, West Africa, Japan, Canada, Lithuania, El Salvador, Brazil, Venezuela - I was honoured to be selected to represent Australia. I was again amazed to discover that all costs of my travel would be covered, as the women in America had raised enough money to cover all costs for all the twenty international girls! Thanks ladies!
