Svensk information fr¥n internationella bah¡samfundet.

The Case of the Bah¡' Minority in Iran
Douglas Martin reviews the history of the persecution of Bah¡'s in Iran and the success the community has had in using the U.N. system in their defense. This article first appeared in the 1992-93 edition of The Bah¡' World, pp. 247-271. The experience of the Bah¡'s of Iran is a classic case of the violation of human rights, produced by religious intolerance. Prior to the Islamic revolution a deep-seated prejudice against the Bah¡'s and their religion characterized not only Iran's Islamic clergy and the illiterate masses, but also many among the country's educated elite and middle class. The prejudice was widespread and communicated itself to many Western observers. Michael Fischer, a generally sympathetic commentator on the revolution notes, for example, that even the exercise of routine civil functions by Bah¡'s was seen as proof of a "Bah¡' conspiracy". Richard W. Cottam, author of Nationalism in Iran, pointed out the problem of even discussing the subject of the Bah¡' Faith in a country in which the word "B¡b" has long been freely used as an epithet, along with such words as "infidel", to describe anyone to whom the speaker is strongly opposed.

"...the teachings of Baha'u'llah and Abdu'l-Baha do not present a definite and detailed educational system, but simply offer certain basic principles and set forth a number of teaching ideals that should guide future Baha'i educationalists in their efforts to formulate an adequate teaching curriculum which would be in full harmony with the spirit of the Baha'i Teachings, and would thus meet the requirements and needs of the modern age."
    From a letter dated 7 June, 1939
written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer
    Welcome to Baha'i Education
We are collectively involved in the boldest educational initiative ever attempted in human history. We call it the Baha'i Faith. Education is the beginning, soul and end of all things successfully Baha'i. Education is clearly the central theme of the Baha'i world-view. From the grand redemptive scheme of God down to the practice of organizing society - everything, Baha'u'llah explains, is about education. Every atom in the universe, every drop of the martyr's blood, every act of service and every prayer has no purpose but our training and education. From the perspective of the Baha'i teachings, so many religious ideas such as salvation, immortality, sight, hearing, life, heaven, paradise, and even that most-abused word "faith" have no other meaning than understanding and insight. Indeed, it is Truth that makes us free.

We suggest that a high-level commission be appointed, whose members come from different countries and different disciplines (e.g. linguistics, economic and social sciences, education, the media), to look into the question of selecting an international auxiliary language and a common script. We assume that in the long run the world will be forced to decide upon a single auxiliary language and a common script - complementing the existing languages - that will be taught in all the schools of the world. Its aim would be to facilitate the transition to a global society by improving communication between nations, reducing costs in trade, administration and other worldwide affairs, and in general by creating more cordial relationships between the diverse peoples of the world

    80. The Baha'i Faith: A Short Introduction
An Introduction to THE BAHA I FAITH. The Baha i Faith is a worldwide religion based on the teachings of Baha u llah (18171892).
    http://www.northill.demon.co.uk/bahai/
    An Introduction to
    THE BAHA'I FAITH
The Baha'i Faith is a worldwide religion based on the teachings of Baha'u'llah (1817-1892). He stated that the time had come for the people of the world to put aside their differences and to unite on the basis of the teachings that he had brought. In the brief course of its 150-year history, the Baha'i Faith has transformed itself from an obscure Middle Eastern sect into a fast-growing religion that has established itself in every country of the world and is rapidly emerging out of obscurity to take its place alongside older more established world religions. The religion has grown and developed greatly in terms of its numerical strength, geographical spread, and community organisation. The largest Baha'i communities are now in South Asia, Africa, Latin America, and (relative to the size of the population) in some of the islands of the Pacific. In these parts of the world, some villages and areas are more or less completely Baha'i. Here the Baha'is have initiated educational, agricultural and community development projects. The latest available official Baha'i statistics (1994) state that there are between 5 and 6 million Baha'is in the world; that Baha'is live in over 110,000 localities; that there are over 17,000 places where there are organized Baha'i communities with elected local councils (Local Spiritual Assemblies); and 172 national elected bodies (National Spiritual Assemblies). We desire but the good of the world and happiness of the nations.... That all nations should become one in faith and all men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and differences of race be annulled... Yet so it shall be; these fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the "Most Great Peace" shall come.... These strifes and this bloodshed and discord must cease, and all men be as one kindred and one family.... Let not a man glory in this, that he loves his country; let him rather glory in this, that he loves his kind.... (words spoken by Baha'u'llah to Prof. E.G. Browne of Cambridge University in 1890)
