Philosophy of Religion Nonbelief as Support for Atheism Theodore M. Drange

ABSTRACT: Atheism of a certain sort can be supported by appeal to the existence of widespread nonbelief in God. This is shown by a Canadian philosopher, J. L. Schellenberg, in his book Divine Hiddenness and Human Reason. His argument is as follows: (1) If there is a God, he is perfectly loving.
(2) If a perfectly loving God exists, reasonable nonbelief does not occur.
(3) [But] reasonable nonbelief occurs.
In this paper I shall first raise some objections to the argument and then try to show how it might be improved. Objections (A) Irrelevance of the term "reasonable" (B) Premise (1) Premise (1) should be rejected because there are theists who do not view God as perfectly loving. Even some Christians think of him as an angry deity bent on punishing people for their sins. Consider for example the biblical god who ordered the total annihilation of the Amalekites (including all their children and animals), or one who would predestine some of his creatures to eternal torment in hell (as commonly believed). Such a deity is not perfectly loving. The property of being perfectly loving is too specific, which is why lexicographers usually omit it in their definitions of "God." To get around this, Schellenberg should put his argument forward only in relation to theists who already think of God as perfectly loving and so would accept his first premise.

I am an Atheist, a Skeptic, and a Rationalist
I'd like to state at the outset that I consider myself a "moderate atheist," which is to say, I am not "anti-religious." I do not hold all religious believers in contempt, I do not believe that having faith means you are necessarily ignorant or stupid, and I do not campaign against religion. Nor do I rant about the "evils" of religion, bringing up the same tired old examples of the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc. I do have major problems with certain religious beliefs, and the behavior of certain religious believers, and I have no problem expressing my views in a provocative manner (see my essays). I also strongly believe in the separation of church and state. And ultimately, I believe that religion is an irrational (in the literal, not pejorative, sense of the word) belief system on the same level as any other superstition. Religion is not

(August 03, 2003) I'm an atheist. I have been for nearly twenty years, and before that I wasn't really anything - I didn't really have a position on God vs. No God. I suppose I just hadn't thought about it properly. I can't really understand how anyone can be anything other than an atheist, but - despite my incredulity - people do still seem to conjure for themselves other non-atheistic options from the spiritual ether. Perhaps it's because I don't understand how people can even vaguely justify theism (or even agnosticism) that I find myself continually in debates about the issue. I find myself explaining my stance on religion at least once a month. At one stage - while I was at University - I went through a bit of a phase of reading other people's books on why they didn't believe in 'god' either. These books were routinely extremely boring, because fundamentally the intellectual labour involved in making a highly convincing 'anti-god' case is so trivial that it feels out of place in the mouths or books of scholars. The Reagan Doctrine
by Isaac Asimov
from The Austin American-Statesman , May 10, 1981
Some time ago, Ronald Reagan pointed out that one couldn't trust the Soviet government because the Soviets didn't believe in God or in an afterlife and therefore had no reason to behave honorably, but would be willing to lie and cheat and do all sorts of wicked things to aid their cause. Naturally, I firmly believe that the president of the United States knows what he is talking about, so I've done my very best to puzzle out the meaning of that statement. Let me begin by presenting this "Reagan Doctrine" (using the term with all possible respect): "No one who disbelieves in God and in an afterlife can possibly be trusted." If this is true (and it must be if the president says so), then people are just naturally dishonest and crooked and downright rotten. In order to keep them from lying and cheating every time they open their mouths, they must be bribed or scared out of doing so. They have to be told and made to believe that if they tell the truth and do the right thing and behave themselves, they will go to heaven and get to plunk a harp and wear the latest design in halos. They must also be told and made to believe that if they lie and steal and run around with the opposite sex, they are going to hell and will roast over a brimstone fire forever. It's a little depressing, if you come to think of it. By the Reagan Doctrine, there is no such thing as a person who keeps his word just because he has a sense of honor. No one tells the truth just because he thinks that it is the decent thing to do. No one is kind because he feels sympathy for others, or treats others decently because he likes the kind of world in which decency exists.

The Demand for Religion:
Hard Core Atheism and "Supply Side" Theory
Wolfgang Jagodzinski
University of Cologne Andrew Greeley
University of Chicago
University of Arizona (6040 words) Abstract Introduction: Secularization Versus Market-Place Finally, disenchantment is often seen as a process where religious explanations of the world are partially replaced by scientific explanations. We ask geologist for the causes of an earthquake or an volcanic eruption but not the priest. If disenchanment of the world in this sense is the essence of secularization, only the demand for specific religious goods or specific components of religion would decline. In this essay we mainly address ourselves to those variants of Secularization theories which predict a general decline in the demand for religion or at least in the demand for large transcendental systems. If this demand does not decline in the more advanced societies and if it correlates neither with age nor education nor time the core assumptions of Secularization theories are disconfirmed. Since Communism may have accelerated this process of secularization we will pay particular attention to the development in former socialist countries. If the demand for religion should be high in all these societies this clearly would support the new economic approach. Opponents (Blau, Land, and Redding 1992, Breault 1989; Bruce 1992; Demerath 1996; Land and Blau 1991) of the economic model of religion have been quick to respond. They have taken issue with some of the individual studies the "supply siders" have reported and also (Demerath 1996) have ridiculed the notion that religion can be the subject of "rational choice." The basic thrust of the criticism, however, implicit it might be, is doubt that there is no relatively consistent demand for religious "compensation."

The Hulk Hogan of Atheism
Remembering Madalyn Murray O'Hair
By now, nearly everyone familiar with the "Case of the Missing Atheist" agrees that Madalyn Murray O'Hair, who disappeared in 1995, along with her son, Jon, and grandaughter, Robin, is dead. It is nearly certain that all three were murdered in a kidnapping-and-extortion scheme masterminded by an ex-convict who was employed by O'Hair and her American Atheists organization. Madalyn's surviving son, William J. Murray, who makes his living on the born-again-Christian lecture circuit, refers to Mom on his website as "the Hulk Hogan of atheism." By this, he means that Madalyn was a big blowhard who was never taken seriously by the public whose attention she so assiduously cultivated since 1960, when she brought suit against the Baltimore school district for mandating Bible readings and the recitation of the Lord's Prayer in its classrooms. Murray's remark may also be a poorly-disguised slap at his mother's corpulence. In any case, Murray hasn't had a lot of use for Mom since he accepted Christ as his personal lawd and savior and turned from hawking atheism to hawking God.
Zero-Tolerance for God
O'Hair's role in getting prayer out of public schools in the United States has been exaggerated , in large part due to her own self-aggrandizing antics and thrist for publicity. She couldn't get the ACLU interested in her case, apparently because she had yanked William, a ninth-grader at the time, out of school before filing a complaint. And the ACLU had more promising school-prayer cases to pursue. But by the time the case reached the Supreme Court in 1963, Madalyn Murray O'Hair was a celebrity, thanks to her acid tongue and complete fearlessness in the face of universal ostracism. She had become known as "the most hated woman in America." For the remainder of her life, she carved out a lucrative career as America's foremost anti-religionist, an abrasive gadfly who was always good for a provocative sound bite on a slow news day.

Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.
Thomas Jefferson, to his nephew Peter Carr in 1787 ( source Welcome to Secular Humanism Worldwide. The purpose of this page is to promote the presence of naturalism rationalism freethought , and skepticism in society via the Internet. This place is intended for anyone who is inherently curious and enjoys discussing the bigger questions in life. Open-mindedness is a requirement because traditional ideas and values may be challenged. Naturalists, such as secular humanists , believe that the supernatural plays no part in our world because the supernatural itself does not exist. All religions involve the supernatural to some degree; therefore, secular humanists reject them in preference of a more convincing philosophy. We believe that God is a creation of man not that man is a creation of God. Mankind, without gods, must rely on itself to improve its condition; so while the rest of society prays for poverty and suffering to end in the world, humanists prefer to go out and do something about it. LATEST UPDATE: Wrote "On Missionaries" in the "For Humanists" section. I have also been mulling over some ideas as of late. High on my agenda is to improve a few sections that have been nagging me ever since I wrote them.
