Welcome to Galatians 4:16! 'Now am I your enemy because I tell you the truth?' - Galatians 4:16 (New Century Version) Galatians 4:16 is a Christian website run by myself, Andre Brett. It is to provide assistance to the Christian church, and those interested in Christianity, by providing articles about various aspects of the Christian faith, along with apologetics articles against various false beliefs.
Please note that you may freely quote from and distribute the articles. I only have one request: could you please acknowledge myself as the author (except in the case of guest authors, when I request you acknowledge them)? Thank you. And if anything develops as a result of using these articles - for example, someone converts to Christianity - it would be fantastic if you could share the good news (it is always nice to know that your work has had a positive affect on someone!).
This site is divided into sections for your ease, and below is a list of them, with a short description.
Basic Christianity
- this section contains articles on basic elements of Christianity and the Christian faith, such as 'Who Is God?' and 'Salvation'.
Atheism
- this section not only contains information on, and apologetics against atheism, but also provides articles proving God is real.

The Atheism of the Gaps
Stephen M. Barr
First Things 57 (November 1995): 50-53. Shadows of the Mind: A Search for the Missing Science of Consciousness. By Roger Penrose. Oxford University Press. 457 pp. $25 Roger Penrose, the Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at Oxford, has gone a long way toward burying materialism, which is remarkable since Penrose is apparently a materialist himself. He is also a formidable mathematician and mathematical physicist who is perhaps best known for the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems in General Relativity. In Shadows of the Mind , however, Penrose says, in effect, "Not so fast." The human mind cannot be a computer, if by "computer" one means the computer as currently conceived. There are, he argues, mathematically demonstrable limitations to the kinds of things computers can do, and these limitations are not shared by the human mind. Penrose, as a good materialist, has faith nonetheless that the human mind is nothing other than a machine. But it must be, he endeavors to show, a machine of a radically new and as yet inconceivable kind. There are two parts, then, to Penrose's argument, and two parts to his book. He argues negatively about what the mind cannot be. And he argues speculatively about what the mind might be.

Has Religion Made Useful Contributions to Society? by Bertrand Russell Excerpt: My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race. I cannot, however, deny that it has made some contributions to civilization. It helped in early days to fix the calendar, and it caused Egyptian priests to chronicle eclipses with such care that in time they became able to predict them. These two services I am prepared to acknowledge, but I do not know of any others.

Atheism, Christian Theism, and Rape (1997)
    Michael Martin
One of the more dramatic debating maneuver used by Christian apologists against atheists is to argue that atheists can provide no objective reason for not raping people. This startling claim follows from the apologists' wider claim that atheists can provide no objective moral reasons for anything. In this paper I will examine both claims in context of the debate between atheism and theism. I will maintain first that the theists' assume without good argument that an atheistic morality must be subjective. Second, I will argue that the theistic position on rape does not escape a special case of the Euthyphro dilemma:[ ] Does God disapprove of rape because it is bad or is rape bad because God disapproves of it? On the first interpretation of the dilemma theists can provide objective reasons for not raping, but so can atheists. On the second interpretation, theists can provide no objective reasons for not raping so that if atheists cannot, they are no worse off than theists. To be sure, some theists attempt to escape from the dilemma by appealing to God's character. But I will argue that they do not succeed and in fact beg the question against atheists. Finally, I will maintain that the Biblical view of rape should not be our moral guide: Not only does the Bible seem to condone rape on certain occasions but its attitude toward female victims of rape is insensitive and chauvinistic.

    'God Bless Atheism'

    By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Tuesday, April 6, 2004; Page A21 On Monday, our family asked why this night was different from all other nights as we celebrated Passover at the home of Jewish friends. There was nothing unusual in this. In Seders of their own, millions of Jews around the world did exactly the same thing. But we are not Jewish. We are Catholics who are celebrating Holy Week. Our story might typically be used to tell a self-congratulatory American tale about the triumph of religious liberty and pluralism. But some serious believers, and also some principled atheists and agnostics, might view our evening differently. I could imagine an orthodox believer Christian, Jewish or Muslim wondering how committed we really were to our own faith. I could imagine the atheist pointing to our shared celebration as evidence that religious faith is, for many, not a matter of genuine conviction but of sentiment, friendship and family ties. There are easy replies to such skepticism, including the command shared across many traditions to love both God and neighbor. This implies does it not? a respect and, yes, a love for those who seek God in different ways.

Welcome to a collection of quotations and essays about God from some of the greatest minds who have ever lived. You will be amazed to find out that most of the brilliant minds who have shaped our civilization were neither atheists nor agnostics. Most great writers, scientists, philosophers, musicians and artists believed in God and expressed their belief with reverence and humility. True brilliance brought them to acknowledge the existence of a mind greater than their own and, in many cases, to develop a personal relationship with the Creator. This work is meant to help many see the fallacy behind the myth propagated in some of today's academic circles that high intelligence will inevitably lead to atheism or agnosticism. 99. Who Is An Atheist? Agnostic? Theist? - Some Definitions
What is atheism? (also some thoughts on theism and agnosticism). Some of the most poorly understood words are theism, atheism, and agnosticism.
    http://www.2think.org/hii/atheism.shtml
    What is atheism?
(also some thoughts on theism and agnosticism) The thoughts expressed below are mine. I haven't directly used any material as a source in writing this definitional essay although I should give credit to George Smith and the paper "Freethought Today" for the insights they provided when I read them over a year before writing this. I'm sure there are other sources that I have read in the past which have influenced the thoughts below, but they don't come to mind at the moment. Some of the most poorly understood words are: theism atheism , and agnosticism . In the following paragraphs, I will attempt to provide a definitional framework for the three words. I'm confident that many people who read this will still choose to define the words differently than I. The purpose of the definitions is not to establish some sort of absolute truth but to provide a working definition that at least I can point to and say, "this is what I think the definition is, and this is how I use these words". If you find the definitions useful, feel free to 'label' yourself using them and direct anyone to this site who doesn't know why you call yourself by one (or more) of these terms. Perhaps the biggest reason the above words are misunderstood is that theists tend to define atheism, atheists tend to define theism, and
