SWAMPY's ASATRU 101
ASATRU! WHAT IS IT?
ASATRU Is the modern version of the religion that was practiced by the peoples of Northern Europe. Who followed the Norse and Germanic gods. It gained its current name in Iceland during the 1970s when it was finally allowed to come out in the open prior to that it had been outlawed by the church as well as the government. (note there is some evidence that the term ASATRU was used much earlier but it was not as widely used as it is today) It has spread around the world and in the process has formed itself into many different groups and traditions. There is no one main leading body to govern ASATRU so each group has its own leaders and rules. Most groups are divided into Hearths and Hofs and several Hofs make up a group. There are several titles to refer to a group but Kindred is the most commonly used term for a group. The Hearth is the smallest unit this is a family unit. A Hof is a group of families who if lucky enough have there own building which is also called a Hof and is built facing North to South. If they have a existing building the Stalli is placed facing North and South. Ok what’s a Stalli you say that’s the Altar which can be dedicated to a single God or to all the Gods of the ASEIR and VANIR. The clergy of ASATRU are known as Gothi(Priest) or Gythia(Priestess). Being called Gothi does not mark any administrative or religious power or rank within ASATRU as a whole. The Gothar are those who have chosen to take on more responsibilities. Anyone in ASATRU can reach the Gods through their own prayers or blots without being a Gothi. The requirements vary from group to group. Some might have written tests, while others might leave it up to the persons heart. The true test of a Gothi is not one of credentials, but of whether the Hof takes one seriously or not.

The Poetry of Robert E. Howard
Something a child said many years ago... ... Dedications and Thanks "We must dig down to the primitive in us, for only out of the conflict between civilized man and the Germanic barbarian will there come what we need: a new experience of God..." - Carl Jung, 1923 "I have sometimes wondered if it were possible that unrecognized forces of the past or present- or even the future- work through the thoughts and actions of living men." - Robert E. Howard, December 14, 1933 What is the Northern Tradition? The religiosity of the northern tribes can be traced back to a wider Eurasian tradition akin, if not identical, to Vedism. One modern name for this wider tradition is Arioweghya - The Noble Path. This Eternal Tradition is also called Senotenodhermn in ProtoIndoEuropean.

What is asatru? Trying exploration.. asatru is essentially their culturallegacy, now worldwide, wherever their descendants roamed.
http://members.iquest.net/~chaviland/whyasa.htm
What is Asatru? Trying to define Asatru can be rather like trying to nail jelly to a tree - whenever one is
convinced it has stuck it finds a way around the nail to land once more at your feet. The word
itself is easy enough - it was invented by Scandinavian antiquarians in the 1830's to describe the
ethical and religious leanings of their forebearers. Literally it means "True to the Aesir", one of
the families of gods and goddesses worshipped by the Vikings. But the concepts go back much
farther, and are indeed much broader than medieval Scandinavia. Five thousand of years ago a people known as the Indo-Europeans swept out of central Asia
across steppe and sea in a wave of conquest, trade and exploration.. Asatru is essentially their
cultural legacy, now worldwide, wherever their descendants roamed. Scandinavia is simply the
last place this culture existed in it's purest form, untouched by the influx of Semitic and Oriental
religion and culture. Asatru is a tribal or folk religion. As such, it shares much with other tribal traditions, including
those of the Native Americans. However, unlike nearly every other tribal religion, Asatru has a

Asatru Wedding Performed at Monsalvat in Eltham (Melbourne Australia) on 5 July 1998
This page is dedicated to the Wedding of Daryl Moulder and Natalie Siem. The wedding was performed by Lyn Knorr a civil celebrant (for legal reasons). The wedding ceremony was the one in the Teutonic Religion book by Kveldulf Gundarsson. It is also used by the Asatru Kindrid of Australia. The AKA has submitted this ceremony for approval by the Australia authorities. There were 62 people who came to the ceremony. The night before the ceremony itself, the claiming of the ancestrial sword was performed (also from the same book). The sword was created by Owen Clarke who makes a number of items for the SCA (Society for Creative Anacronism) and other recreationalist groups.

Discovering the Gods Freyja/Freo Article Thor/Thunor Article Wes hal and welcome to the Heathen/Asatru website of Shawn and Carrie Rowland. On these ever-growing pages you will find our thoughts and understandings of the spiritual path developed by our pre-Christian, and pre-Islamic ancestors. Our religion, in its many regional, familial, and ideological forms is the natural faith of the Germanic peoples. The Germanic peoples now-a-days make up those who can trace their lineage back to the English, French, Germans, Dutch, Lombards, Swedes, Norwegians, Icelanders, and other assorted folks like some of the non-Celtic Irish, Belgians, and Austrians.
Our people are by nature tolerant of other beliefs, and leave such choices always up to the individual as opposed to the peer-pressure and fear tactics often found amongst Christianity and Islam. However, it is a general belief that the naturally developed faith of your ancestors and your culture is the one best suited for you. Heathens then, adhere to the ethics, practices, and beliefs developed by their Northern European folk. This religion, though similar to Japanese Shinto, African Voudun, Indian Dharma, Celtic Druidism, and other ethnocentric faiths, is unique to the Germanic experience just as those other faiths are unique to the experiences of their respective peoples.

Box 961; Payson AZ 85547 The Alliance is the linear descendent of the Asatru Free Assembly. They are a democratically run national confederation of independent kindreds who meet once a year in an Allthing to conduct business. It is essentially conservative and libertarian. "The Alliance is based upon the ancient model of tribal democracy known as the Thing, and member kindreds support a code of laws we feel necessary to preserve and protect Asatru from those who would dilute, subvert, or in any way harm our religion. Membership in the Alliance is encouraged for those who actively promote and believe in the Aesir and Vanir and our collective Heathen Heritage. Anyone interested in joining the Alliance should contact the kindred of choice for acceptance. There is no membership in the Alliance except through a kindred. Applicants must subscribe to the membership requirements of the kindred of choice and uphold the bylaws of the Asatru Alliance." The Ring of Troth P.O. Box 18812; Austin TX 78760 The Ring of Troth was founded by Edred Thorsson. He resigned in Spring of 2242 (Runic Reckoning - 1992 C.E.) and has been replaced by Prudence Priest, most well known as the editor of Yggdrasil. Due to the resignation of Thorsson and several other members of the High Rede (i.e. Board of Directors) the Ring is currently in reorganization, and it appears that it will emerge much stronger than before. The Ring is governed by an appointed High Rede of 9 persons who guide the national affairs of the Ring. They offer a number of programs include an Elder training program for prospective clergy, The Rune Ring for study of the magickal properties of the Runes from within a Germanic Pagan context, and recognition for local Kindreds. The Ring of Troth requires that "its members affiliate for cultural and religious reasons rather than for racial and political reasons.
