The Visible, Hierarchical, Apostolic Church In the Nicene Creed , which is accepted my most Christians, the Christian Church is described as being "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic." These are known as the four marks of the Church. The notions of holiness and catholicity are not much in dispute. The mark of holiness may be defined as the possession, and dissemination of the sublime, holy, Christ-centered moral code of Christianity (as best exemplified by saints or otherwise great, godly figures). All parties - while disagreeing on many particulars - concur that this is a central function of the Church. Catholicity simply means universal. Here Protestants and Catholics disagree only on the nature of that Church which is to be considered universal and all-encompassing. This brings us to the oneness and apostolicity of the Church, where the disagreements are great indeed. Most Protestants (especially evangelicals) see unity and oneness subsisting primarily or solely in the inner, invisible , spiritual unity of those who are in fact in Christ by virtue of being justified, or born again , or regenerated (with or without baptism, depending on denomination). For them, the church consists of the Spirit-filled, predestined

131. Tract Number 47
If the visible church is of vital importance, what can be said of the salvation of professing Christians who belong to Protestant sects rather than to the Catholic and apostolic church? 1 November, 1834.
http://justus.anglican.org/resources/pc/tracts/tract47.html
Tracts for the Times THE VISIBLE CHURCH. LETTER IV. [Number 47 understand what each individual is; an arbitrary classing of the whole Christian family under but two or three countenances , and mistaking one man’s doctrine for another’s. You at least have not called me an Arminian, or a high Churchman, or a Borderer, or one of this or that school, and so dismissed me. To pass from this subject. You tell me that in my zeal in advocating the doctrine of the Church Catholic and Apostolic, I "use expressions and make assumptions which imply that the Dissenters are without the pale of salvation." So let me explain myself on these points. Further, if to whom much is given, of him much will be required, how is it safe for us to make light of our privileges, if we have them? is not this to reject the birth-right? to hide our talent under a napkin? When we say that God has done more for us than for the Presbyterians, this indeed may be connected with feelings of spiritual pride; but it need not. We may, by so saying, provoke ourselves to jealousy; for we dare not deny that, in spite of our peculiar privileges of communion with Christ, yet even higher saints may lie hid (to our great shame) among those who have not themselves the certainty of our especial approaches to His glorious majesty. Was not Elijah sent to a widow of Sarepta? did not Elisha cure Naaman? and are not these instances set for ward by our Lord Himself as warnings to us "not to be high minded but to fear;" and, again, as a gracious consolation when we think of our less favoured brethren? Where is the narrowness of view and feeling which you impute to me? Why may I not speak out, in order at once to admonish myself, and to attempt to reclaim to a more excellent way those who are at present severed from the true Church.

A Time Line of Church History The following timeline and associated text provided further below is intended to provide the reader with a general and simplified overview of the development of the Christian Church. For a more detailed description of the history of the church, the reader is encouraged to read The Byzantine Legacy in the Orthodox Church by Fr. John Meyendorff and Rome-Constantinople-Moscow Historical and Theological Studies also by Fr. John Meyendorff. The first chapter in the latter reference begins with the following paragraph: All historians agree today that the schism which eventually became a permanent form of separation between Eastern and Western Christians did not occur suddenly. It was the result of a progressive "estrangement" (the English term used by the French theologian Yves Congar), and cannot even be dated. The churches of Rome and Constantinople were often separated for long periods of time already between the fourth and the ninth centuries. Those early conflicts were sometimes caused by heresies, held in the capital of the Eastern empire (Arianism, 335-381; Monotheletism, 533-680; Iconoclasm, 723-787; 815-842) and rightfully rejected by Rome. Sometimes Rome and Constantinople differed in their attitude in the field of eccliastical oikonomia (the "Neo-Nicean" position, inherited from the Cappadocian Fathers, 381-ca. 400; the attitude to be adopted towards the

This was to insure the perpetuality of the Catholic church which JesusChrist founded. That system is called apostolic Succession .

The Catholic Church
in the New Testament...
Jesus Christ declared in Matthew 16:18, that He will build His Church on solid rock, the rock of Simon-Peter.
It is generally recognized that the point of actual founding of the Catholic Church is at the cross in John 19:34, "...but one of the soldiers opened His side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water
At Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4, the Apostles were given the authority, and the power, by the Holy Spirit with which to commence the building of the Church . Notice in Acts 2:14-36 that Peter, the same Peter who denied Christ three times and ran off and wept (Matt 26:69-75), is immediately emboldened and gives his first discourse.
The blueprint for the birth and growth of the Catholic Church was drawn by Jesus Christ Himself.
"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. This indeed is the smallest of all the seeds; but when it grows up it is larger than any herb and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and dwell in its branches." Matthew 13:31-32 Jesus Christ planted that tiny seed, and He has tended it, and watered it, and loved it, and nourished it, and protected it, and watched it grow and expand for almost 2000 years. He will continue to watch over His

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
PART ONE -
THE PROFESSION OF FAITH
SECTION ONE
III. CHRIST JESUS "MEDIATOR AND FULLNESS OF ALL REVELATION"[25]
God has said everything in his Word
65 "In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son."[26] Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father's one, perfect and unsurpassable Word. In him he has said everything; there will be no other word than this one. St. John of the Cross, among others, commented strikingly on Hebrews 1:1-2: In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word - and he has no more to say. . . because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behaviour but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty.[27]
There will be no further Revelation
66 "The Christian economy, therefore, since it is the new and definitive Covenant, will never pass away; and no new public revelation is to be expected before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ."[28] Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries.
