Akan Cosmology
Akan Cultural Symbols Project Hye anhye - Unburnable
The Akan believe that the universe was created by a Supreme Being, whom they refer to variously as O b o ade e (Creator), Nyame (God), O domankoma (Infinite, Inventor), Ananse Kokuroko (The Great Spider; The Great Designer), etc.
The Akan religious thought is essentially theocentric and theistic, with the Supreme Being, God at the center of it all. From this perspective, the Akan use their cultural symbols to portray their beliefs about God, their attitudes towards God and His creation, and the Akan's relation to God and His Creation. The Akan also believe that human creativity affects the universe positively or negatively. In essence, the Akan believe the universe is both a natural and social creation. Social creation is in the form of institutions and products human beings have invented. The Akan is required to safeguard the environment of the universe for a continuum of society members consisting of the dead, the living, and the yet-to-be-born. The Akan claim the Supreme Being created life and death, and death overcame the Supreme Being. However, the Supreme Being, having the antidote to the venom of death, was able to overcome death. This Supreme Being, Nyame, has eternal life.

To you we want to say Medase Pii and may the Nananom Nsamanfoa continue to bless your efforts in awakening our world to the rich, vibrant culture of the Africans and in particular the Akans of Ghana West Africa. You are a blessing to us all. Gye Nyame Cultural Comparative It is obvious that while different in style, African people are linked throught their practices that honor Almighty God, the Ancestors and the natural forces of the planet. They embue their lives with a constant remembrance of the spirit world thereby living in constant union with the unseen. They are willing goverend by the laws of the Universe that are universally meeted out by the Higher Than All Forms. This Higher Than All Forms uses lesser beings such as as ancestors and deities to mediate and officiate these laws for the purpose of the growth of human society in harmony and love. These lesser beings are part of a heirarchy and represent the explicit connection that human beings can have with the Higher Than All Forms and all its creation. Through human interactions the Chiefs and Kings house the Godhead and are honored without reserve. African people, while expressing various belief practices are one in their belief systems. http://www.ushaka.com/akanpeople2.html
THE TWI SPEAKING PEOPLE The history of Ghana is, in fact, the history of the Twi speaking people who now call themselves the Akan. The Akan people are among the most prominent and traditionally well-cultured indigenous inhabitants of Africa. There are many groups that constitute the Akan people. They can be divided and subdivided into the Twi, the Fante, Akim, Ashanti, Juaben, and Agona people who respect and believe in tradition. As reflected in their life style, all-important events in life involve various rituals and rites. From the Adae to the Odiwira to the Homowo to the Damba to the Yam festival, Ghana is a land of rituals, shrines and festivals. Of significance in the Akan culture is the symbolic representation of the “Stool.” In general, the stool symbolizes the “soul of the nation.” It is believed that the stool is a representative (repository) of the Ancestors. Thus, the stool itself inspires and is accorded great honor and respect. Another important culture symbol of the Akan people is the Kente fabric. The precious Kente is the cultural identity and landmark symbol of the Akan people. Historically, this precious Kente assisted in serving as a goal of healing and unifying the fragmented elements of the Akan People into a whole, a Nation. The precious Kente is now the National Symbol of Ghana, West Africa. The production of this precious Kente is over 10,000 years old. The Akan people have lived and ruled their land for thousands of years before they experienced the consecutive disruptions by Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British invasion and domination. When the Portuguese invaded the West Coast of Africa in 1471, they found a people rich in history, culture, and tradition and gold. As a result of not appreciating the spiritual significance of the culture and history, the Portuguese focused on the material abundance of the gold and named the region the “Gold Coast.”

These are the akan, the Ewe, MoleDagbane , the Guan, and the GaAdangbe. The akan Group. The akan people occupy practically the whole
http://www.beepworld.de/members18/shika-gold/ashanti.htm
Zurück On the basis of language and culture, historical geographers and cultural anthropologists classify the indigenous people of Ghana into five major groups. These are the Akan, the Ewe, MoleDagbane , the Guan, and the Ga-Adangbe.
The Akan Group
The Akan people occupy practically the whole of Ghana south and west of the Black Volta. Historical accounts suggest that Akan groups migrated from the north to occupy the forest and coastal areas of the south as early as the thirteenth century. Some of the Akan ended up in the eastern section of Côte d'Ivoire, where they created the Baule community. When Europeans arrived at the coast in the fifteenth century, the Akan were established there. The typical political unit was the small state under the headship of an elder from one of the seven or eight clans that composed Akan society. From these units emerged several powerful states, of which the oldest is thought to be Bono (also called Brong). As a result of military conquests and partial assimilation of weaker groups, well-known political entities, such as Akwamu, Asante , Akyem, Denkyira, and Fante emerged before the close of the seventeenth century. Asante, for example, continued to expand throughout the eighteenth century and survived as an imperial power until the end of the nineteenth century, when it succumbed to British rule
