Agnosticism
The terms agnosticism and agnostic were coined by Thomas Henry Huxley in . The concept however has long existed, a philosophical and theological view that the existence of God (or potentially other matters) is either unknown, or inherently unknowable. The term has since come to be commononly used to describe those who take a doubtful or noncommittal stance on the existence of God as well as various esoteric matters of world religions Many agnostics are people who do not believe in absolute truth . Others doubt the likelihood of various religious phenomena, and reserve judgment. Yet others believe that people can have scientific or real knowledge of phenomena, but when it comes to what lies behind phenomena there can be no evidence that entitles anyone either to deny or affirm anything. The singular characteristic of agnosticism is uncertainty or doubt. Table of contents 1 Origin of the term

(13 K'an (Corn) / 7 Pohp - 104/260 - 12.19.11.3.4) "A man without god is like a fish without a bicycle." Quoted by Robert Anton Wilson Well, I picked up "guerrilla ontology" from the Physics/Consciousness Research Group when I was a member back in the 1970s. Physicists more usually call it "model agnosticism," and it consists of never regarding any model or map of Universe with total 100% belief or total 100% denial. Following Korzybski , I put things in probabilities, not absolutes. I give most of modern physics over 90% probability, the Loch Ness Monster around 50% probability and anything the State Department says under 5% probability. As Bucky Fuller used to say, "Universe is nonsimultaneously apprehended"-nobody can apprehend it all at once-so we have no guarantee that today's best model will fit what we may discover tomorrow. My only originality lies in applying this zetetic attitude outside the hardest of the hard sciences, physics, to softer sciences and then to non-sciences like politics, ideology, jury verdicts and, of course, conspiracy theory . Also, I have a strong aversion, almost an allergy, to Belief Systems, or B.S.-a convenient abbreviation I owe to David Jay Brown. A neurolinguistic diet high in B.S. and low in instrumental data eventually produces Permanent Brain Damage, a lurching gait, blindness and hairy palms like a werewolf. - RAW

Atheism, or agnosticism, is pretty much the default postures in Sweden, so unlike Tom Coates I very rarely have to explain my lack of faith in God, and seldomly my rigid stance on the non-existance of God. Tom's post on the existance of God is a pretty good read on its own. But what makes it even better is the comments on it, which have tilted the discussion towards the justification of atheism compared to agnosticism; a discussion which in my opinion is far more interesting than wether or not to adhere to moral values two thousand years past their expiry date. Atheists often find themselves being accused of "intolerance" by agnostics since atheists believe in the non-existance of among other things God, whereas agnostics profess they merely "don't know" or "are skeptical". I'm an atheist myself, I believe God does not exist, as do I believe among other things that there is no after-life, no heaven, no hell and no such thing as a soul. Agnostics tend to challange those stances because no atheist can know that for certain, and thus they should rather be agnostics. Since, nobody

While it might seem odd at first to include atheism, agnosticism, and skepticism in a series on religion, these three systems of thought
should be addressed here. Religion is sometimes defined as whatever about which a man is deeply concerned,' and it is to such concerns that we now turn. Everyone, even the non-theist attempts to make sense of and explain the reality around him. While those who believe in some form of God attribute this world's existence in some way to that God (or gods); the atheist, agnostic, and skeptic form an alternative naturalistic explanation for this world. Since our space is limited, we usually will refer to the three views as one, recognizing the great overlap among them. Where their distinctions are important we will point them out. After defining the three terms we will review briefly the history of the non-theist (apart from God) movement. Then we will discuss five kinds of objections which represent most of the arguments brought by nonbelievers against a belief in God. These five objections include problems in the areas of language, knowledge, moral concepts, scientific method, and logic. Since this is to be a survey of non-theistic religions, and not a presentation of Christianity, we will not present systematic proofs for the existence of God, but we will present short theistic resolutions to the five problems mentioned. We have included the names of the major philosophers whose writings would be helpful in understanding these areas of belief.

CREATIVE AGNOSTICISM
Robert Anton Wilson
One of the greatest achievements of the human mind, modern science, refuses to recognize the depths of its own creativity, and has now reached the point in its development where that very refusal blocks its further growth. Modern physics screams at us that there is no ultimate material reality and that whatever it is we are describing, the human mind cannot be parted from it. —Roger Jones, Physics as Metaphor I f, as Colin Wilson says, most of history has been the history of crime, this is because humans have the ability to retreat from existential reality into that peculiar construct which they call The Real” Universe and I have been calling hypnosis. Any Platonic “Real” Universe is a model, an abstraction, which is comforting when we do not know what to do about the muddle of existential reality or ordinary experience. In this hypnosis, which is learned from others but then becomes self-induced, The “Real” Universe overwhelms us and large parts of existential, sensory-sensual experience are easily ignored, forgotten or repressed. The more totally we are hypnotized by The “Real” Universe, the more of existential experience we then edit out or blot out or blur into conformity with The “Real” Universe.

His scientific debates against Richard Owen demonstrated that there were close similarities between the cerebral anatomy of humans and gorillas. Interestingly, Huxley did not accept many of Darwin's ideas ( e.g. gradualism), and was more interested in advocating a materialist professional science than in defending natural selection.

In the religious sense, "belief" refers to a part of a wider spiritual or moral foundation, generally called faith. Belief is considered propositional in that it is an assertion, claim or expectation about reality that is presumed to be either true or false (even if this cannot be practically determined, such as a belief in the existence of a particular deity).

Certain philosophers, however, choose to define these concepts in a technical way, different from their everyday use. According to philosophic jargon, Knowledge can be defined as information associated with an intentionality. Both knowledge and information consist of true statements. But knowledge can be considered as information that has a purpose or use. The study of knowledge is called epistemology.

Model Agnosticism vs. A New Idolatry: A Critique of Robert Anton Wilson's The New Inquisition
"It seems to me that existenceat this point I have doubts about 'the' 'universe' is a lot like a Rorschach ink-blot. Everybody looks at it and sees their own favorite reality- tunnel." Robert Anton Wilson's book, The New Inquisition , addresses the issue of these belief systems. He feels that modern science, at least "the establishment" of modern science, is blinded by it's own reality tunnel. But is he right? The New Inquisition deals to a certain degree with the philosophy of science. Robert Anton Wilson heavily criticizes the state of the scientific establishment today. He finds his main point of contention in their dogmatic reliance upon already established ideas when judging new work. One of his targets is the Committee for Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, CSICOP. He claims that they don't give a fair hearing to anyone they don't already agree with. He also feels that the reliance on the military-industrial complex for funding maintains the status quo. Wilson asserts that instead of this dogmatic attitude scientists should employ skepticism, or a sort of agnostic principle, when confronted with new ideas. According to Wilson science these days worships the Idol of Materialism. He calls their underlying belief "Fundamental Materialism" and likens it to religious fundamentalism. Wilson would prefer a principle which "refuses total belief or total denial and regards models as tools to be used only and always where appropriate and replaced (by other models) only and always where not appropriate."

Not only is the material of my activity given to me as a social product (as is even the language in which the thinker is active): my own existence is social activity, and therefore that which I make of myself, I make of myself for society and with the consciousness of myself as a social being. What is Atheism?
Atheism is often looked upon as denying god. This is not completely true. Basically atheism (a=lack of, theism=belief in gods) is only lack of belief in a god godess or gods. There are basically two different views of atheism ( Webster lists sub-groups), weak and strong atheism. (An introduction to atheism)
Weak atheism is a negation: "I don't believe that it is true that god exists"
Strong atheism is a positive claim: "I believe that it is true that god does not exist" Most people don't know this, and weak atheists often call themselves agnostics, which is a different view. Agnosticism (a=lack of, gnosis=knowledge) concerns lack of knowledge, but the popular view is that agnosticism deals with belief. That someone doesn't know if he believes or not. But how can anyone who doesn't believe not be defined as a weak atheist? The term agnosticism was originally defined by TH Huxley, from Acts where an inscription says "To the unknown God", and was a view implicite accepting god's existence:
God is, and god is unknown.
