LIFE AFTER DEATH, NIHILISM, AND MODERN PHILOSOPHY
(Third Millennium Final Edition - corrections and revisions are continuing)
What Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, Existentialism, etc., Really Say About Your Future
Do you believe that life does end, or may end, at death? Everyone who believes that death may be the end should read the following essay from cover to cover. It represents a serious attempt to identify what may be a critical flaw in the foundation of many modern philosophies. It will help those who study Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, and Existentialism, recognize questions that are probably already on their minds. It will address essential questions that you need to seek answers for. We will suggest that, whether they realize and admit it or not, anyone who does not believe in an "afterlife" is necessarily a "nihilist". In response to what appears to be a strong, intuitive, predisposition of readers to dismiss the conclusions of this essay as simply wrong, it has grown from a few pages to a lengthy, sometimes difficult to read, somewhat rambling, occasionally boring, text. For those who want a shorter introduction to our thoughts on nihilism, please read the summary of this essay by clicking here . Most readers will want to read the summary before proceeding with the detailed analysis. Those who choose to continue with this version may also find the summary interesting, as it includes some additional materials (the summary is a chapter in a book we publish, which we provide links to at the end

Search Agnosticism / Atheism Affirming Humanism Dateline: September 23, 1998 Considering the level and intensity of attacks levied against humanism by religious conservatives in the media, from the pulpit, and on the internet, one might be lead to think that there is something to all of their allegations. But is there? In an intermittent series of essays, I intend to address a variety of those allegations and examine whether or not they enjoy a solid foundation. One common misconception which is often seen being bandied about is the idea that humanism embodies some sort of dogmatic creed . Most humanists will find this laughable, but they should not shrug it off too quickly. Enough people actually believe it that we really need to deal with it.

To that purpose he has written an exposition of neuromemetics called The Electric Meme.

Welcome to a collection of quotations and essays about God from some of the greatest minds who have ever lived. You will be amazed to find out that most of the brilliant minds who have shaped our civilization were neither atheists nor agnostics. Most great writers, scientists, philosophers, musicians and artists believed in God and expressed their belief with reverence and humility. True brilliance brought them to acknowledge the existence of a mind greater than their own and, in many cases, to develop a personal relationship with the Creator. This work is meant to help many see the fallacy behind the myth propagated in some of today's academic circles that high intelligence will inevitably lead to atheism or agnosticism. Clarence Darrow
by Art Thomas (with Emanuel Haldeman-Julius)
Thanks to CRT President Lanny Swerdlow, those who attended the June 18th CRT meeting enjoyed watching a fine video performance by actor Henry Fonda. Fonda portrayed the great Clarence Darrow doing a splendid job busting religious bunk. Lanny also read from a couple of news clippings about Darrow in his late years. Then he read a eulogy to Darrow by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, who had published several books by the noted lawyer, that follows: Clarence Darrow Clarence Darrow, 80-year-old lawyer, Agnostic, liberal, defender of the "underdog" and fighter for civil rights, died on March 13, 1938. He had lived a full, useful, constructive life. As a speaker, he moved tens of thousands to an appreciation of Freethought and humanism. As a writer, especially in his numerous little volumes which I published during the past 20 years, Darrow reached even a larger audience with his messages of enlightenment and realistic evaluations of supernaturalism. For two decades, Darrow was a warm friend of my establishment, pouring his writings and speeches into my presses and always refusing to accept a dollar in payment for his contributions. I offered him money numerous times, but he always declined to accept, once even returning a check I had sent him for his part in a debate on religion. He told me many times that speaking and writing for Freethought were efforts he wanted to dive to humanity, without financial rewards. Darrow, the lawyer, is known to most Americans. Darrow, the Freethinker, wasn't as widely known, but the spade work he did for Agnosticism stands out as a career in itself, one that will, in time, be placed along side that of Ingersoll and other mind-liberators. Once, when asked his attitude toward religion, Darrow replied:

The reasons for not believing in knowledge
I do not only believe that the existence of god is unknowable. I also believe that everything else is unknowable as well. There is not one fact that we know for certain. (not even the preceding sentence!) Meditations on First Philosophy , presented three reasons to doubt all that we perceive. His first reason casts doubt on the reliability of the senses. His second reason casts doubt on whether we are awake or merely dreaming. His third reason questions whether an omnipotent demon might be deceiving us, making us believe things which are not true. (It must be noted that Descartes overcomes these doubts and, later in the book, claims to prove the existence of God.) I am agnostic for several reasons, including those given by Descartes. I will describe two of my reasons below - the limitations of the senses and the fact that we are viewing a system from within. GOOD SOIL
by Kenneth Ambrose Priebe Luke 8:11-15 says, "The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop." To me that verse is probably one of the truest and most personal that I have yet read, because my story is a good example of it. The truth of Christ faded in and out of my life in different shades and colors until I finally got planted in some good soil. I was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, and was brought up in the United Methodist Church.

Philosophy of Immanuel Kant
Kant's philosophy is generally designated as a system of transcendental criticism tending towards Agnosticism in theology, and favouring the view that Christianity is a non-dogmatic religion. Privatdozent It is usual to distinguish two periods of Kant's literary activity. The first, the pre-critical period, extends from 1747 to 1781, the date of the epoch-making "Kritik der reinen Vernunft"; the second, the critical period, extends from 1781 to 1794. THE PRE-CRITICAL PERIOD Privatdozent . Besides these, in which he expounded and defended the current philosophy of Wolff, he published other treatises in which he applied that philosophy to problems of mathematics and physics. In 1770 appeared the work "De Mundi Sensibilis atque Intelligibilis Formis et Principiis" (On the Forms and Principles of the Sensible and Intelligible World), in which he shows for the first time a tendency to adopt an independent system of philosophy. The years from 1770 to 1780 were spent, as Kant himself tells us, in the preparation of the "Critique of Pure Reason". THE CRITICAL PERIOD It will be found most convenient to divide the study of Kant's critical philosophy into three portions, corresponding to the doctrines contained in his three "Critiques". We shall, therefore, take up successively (1) the doctrines of the "Critique of Pure Reason"; (2) the doctrines of the "Critique of Practical Reason"; (3) the doctrines of the "Critique of the Faculty of Judgment".

Agnosticism
From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
The terms agnosticism and agnostic were coined by Thomas Henry Huxley in . The concept however has long existed: the philosophical and theological view that the existence of God gods or deities is either unknown, or inherently unknowable. The term is also used to describe those who are unconvinced or noncommittal about the existence of deities as well and other matters of religions . The word agnostic comes from the Greek a (no) and gnosis (knowledge). Agnosticism is not to be confused with a view specifically opposing the doctrine of gnosis and Gnosticism The singular characteristic of agnosticism is uncertainty or doubt. For this reason it is a form of scepticism focusing on religious statements, and so faces some of the same philosophical issues. For instance if an agnostic claims that absolute knowledge of truth is not possible and does not restrict the scope of this claim, they are in danger of contradicting themselves. For then the statement there are no absolute truths would appear itself to be an absolute truth. An agnostic is on firmer ground if they claim that religious statements or statements about the
