Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church
"Wait until the prayer is over, and I will get up and trouble you no more."
T he genesis of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), which today numbers over 2.5 million members, can be traced to a clearing in the Delaware woods in the year 1777. To that sylvan setting an itinerant Methodist preacher came, spreading the gospel to a group of slaves, among whom was a 17-year-old field hand named Richard Allen.
When Allen heard the Word he underwent a religious awakening. Enslaved and recently severed from several members in his family, who were "sold down the river" Allen took solace in his belief that he would never be cut off from God's love. The faith that took root in the forest that day would ultimately enable Allen to establish the first AME Church Mother Bethel. The life of Richard Allen and the history of Mother Bethel are inextricably linked he is the rock upon which the church was built. Richard Allen was born into the slave-owning, Philadelphia household of Benjamin Chew in 1760. Chew was a successful lawyer who would become Pennsylvania's attorney general and chief justice of the court of appeals. (Chew's country estate, Cliveden, became the focal point of the 1777 Battle of Germantown.) Allen and his parents and siblings were household slaves of the Chews, responsible for cleaning, cooking and looking after the family's five children. When Richard was 7, he and his entire family were sold to a Delaware farmer named Stokeley Sturgis. While he was lucky in that his family was kept intact, he now had to endure the arduous life of a field hand. In recalling his masters at a later period in life, he called them "kind" but said slavery was a "bitter pill." The pill became more bitter after Sturgis sold Richard's mother and three siblings. Allen, 17 at the time, would never see these family members again.

First AME Church On this date in 1816, representatives of five Methodist congregations assembled at the Bethel church in Philadelphia.
Dissatisfied with the treatment of Blacks in the Methodist Episcopal Church, they organized the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). Daniel Coker was the church’s first elected bishop, but declined. Richard Allen then became the first AME bishop. The Black Methodist church in the United States was formally organized in 1816. It developed from a congregation formed by a group of Blacks who withdrew in 1787 from St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia because of discrimination.
They built Bethel African Methodist Church in Philadelphia, and in 1799 Bishop Francis Asbury of the Methodist Episcopal Church ordained Richard Allen its minister. In 1816, Asbury consecrated Allen bishop of the newly organized African Methodist Episcopal Church. Confined to the Northern states before the American Civil War, the church spread rapidly in the South after the war. It supports an active home-missions program and has sent missionaries to Africa and the West Indies.
The church is Methodist in doctrine and church government, and it holds a general conference every four years. It has about 3,500,000 members. Currently the African Methodist Episcopal Church is the largest Black Methodist denomination in America, with about 2.2 million congregants.

Wow! Isn't God great. He continues to call his small churches to fullfill the great commission and spread the good news. Whether, you are clergy, or laity you are an intrical part of God's plan for salvation. It does not matter the size of your church only the size of your heart for Christ, is the only thing that matters. Remember one plus God is a majority.
We have updated the pages and I invite you to look around. We also ask that you sign up if you would like to receive emails regarding new grants. I am also in the process of working on some many online classes that we can use to help our churches. So do let us know if you are interested. Welcome to the homepage of Small and Rural Churches United (S.A.R.C.U.) This organization is a support group for small and rural churches of the A.M.E Church. We are not an official organ of the A.M.E denomination but an conduit for encouragement and sharing of information.

Bethel AME Church
(litograph)
This date marks the founding of the first Black Methodist Episcopal church in America in 1794.
This took place in Philadelphia, PA where Richard Allen, a minister and notable orator worked extremely hard to ensure a growing church membership. In 1787, Allen, Absalom Jones, and William White were pulled from their knees during prayer by a white usher for being in an area reserved for white members of the congregation.
Seven years later Allen fulfilled his dream by founding the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church. His efforts continued to produce beyond Philadelphia as other Black congregations developed in Norristown, PA, Wilmington, DA, Baltimore, MA, and Camden, NJ.
