REEDY CHAPEL AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH . The Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church at 2015 Broadway in Galveston, is the parent church in Texas of that denomination, which in turn separated from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1848 the split between North and South of several communions, a split exacerbated by the increasing moral debate over slavery, qv caused the white congregation of Galveston's Methodist Episcopal Church, South, to decide to separate its black and white members. On March 18, 1848, the property on which the present Reedy Chapel stands was purchased by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Soon the church and parsonage were erected and "given to the Slaves as the Negro Methodist Episcopal Church South." After the Civil War qv the church was reorganized as a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. qv BIBLIOGRAPHY: Carolyn Henley, "Reedy Chapel, the Oldest Negro A.M.E. Church in Texas," Junior Historian , January 1966.

The Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church was founded by the Reverend Richard Allen in 1787. It is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal church established by African Americans in the United States. It is located in Philadelphia. The Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church was also an important Underground Railroad stop. The Christian Recorder The Christian Recorder was the official newspaper of the Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church. The newspaper published articles for its members about the Underground Railroad, the abolition of slavery and religion. One of the things that gave Southern slaves hope was that attitudes in the North started changing early about slavery. Early Northern slave owners sometimes freed, or emancipated, their slaves. On the facing page is an article from the Christian Recorder about emancipated slaves. Use of this site signifies your agreement to the Terms of Service updated February 1998.

At that time it eclipsed Boston, Massachusetts and New York, New York in political and social importance, with Boston-born Benjamin Franklin playing an extraordinary role in its rise.

Lutheranafrican methodist episcopal Dialogue. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the african methodist episcopal
http://www.elca.org/ea/ecumenical/ame/
Lutheran-African Methodist Episcopal Dialogue The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church expressed informally an interest in establishing a bilateral dialogue in the 1980s. A preliminary meeting of representatives from each church met in Washington, D.C., in 1990. Formal meetings began, with the first held in Indianapolis in November 1991 addressing the question "How has the American experience affected and/or shaped the life of my church?" Additional meetings explored questions such as "Protest and Reform: A study of Marth Luther and Richard Allen," "Marginality in the Biblical witness," "The Role of the AME Church in American political culture." The first round of this dialogue was concluded with a fifth session meeting in Gettysburg in March 1996. Understanding One Another: A Congregational Resource was written in the hope that many congregations of our respective communions will use it to accomplish the goal of manifesting the unity of our Christian community in a time when disunity, fragmentation, and outrifht conflict so often mark our society and churches. Limited quantities of this document can be requested by contacting staff of the Department for Ecumenical Affairs.

BY KEYWORD:

Richard Allen founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1816. Allen and his followers broke away from the Methodist Church because they believed that white Methodists were infringing on their religious beliefs. As early as the 1780s, Allen hoped to form a congregation open exclusively to African Americans . Many whites feared African-American members could gain power in the Methodist Church and alter traditional beliefs and religious practices. Many white Methodists also were racists. They demanded that blacks either sit in the back of the churches or in balconies. They also established a rule that only allowed African-American members to take communion after the whites had finished. The racism and unwillingness of the Methodist Church to listen to the needs and desires of the African-American church members prompted blacks to separate from the Methodist Church. Although the African Methodist Episcopal Church broke with the Methodist Church, its members decided to affiliate their new church with both the Methodist and the Episcopal Churches. The main reason for this was a deep resentment of the Methodists among some of Allen's congregation. Other members pointed out that the Methodist Church officially condemned slavery, although many of the white members were racists. Both in the past and today, the African Methodist Episcopal Church members believe that God desires them to spread his word. God also wants his followers to care for other people by any means possible. The Church places a heavy emphasis on education. Its members believe that the best way to help others is to give them the ability to help themselves. While the Church's original membership consisted exclusively of African Americans, people of all races are welcome to join the congregation today. Church members also have a great deal of control over their ministers. The African Methodist Episcopal Church consists of nineteen separate districts. The majority of these districts oversee the faith in the United States and Canada. Other districts service the Caribbean Sea, Central and South America, and Africa. By the late 1990s, approximately three million people belonged to the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

A THOUGHT FOR THE NEW YEAR Ephesians 4:21-24 Surely you have heard of Him and were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
