They were directed toward a newly built seating gallery, and mistakenly sat in its "white" section. During a prayer, white ushers pulled the black worshippers to their feet and demanded that they sit in the "proper" section. Humiliated, Allen—a former slave from Delaware who had joined the evangelical Wesleyan movement because of its work against slavery and who eventually became a licensed Methodist preacher—and several others left the church at the prayer's end. "They were no more plagued with us in the church," he later said. The gap between black and white Methodists was also created, according to theologian Will B. Gravely, by "incidents of white pastors refusing to take black infants into their arms to christen them ... of blacks having to wait until all whites were served the Lord's Supper before being admitted to the table ... [and] of conflicts over access to burial grounds."

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church
Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church In 1839 a group of black Detroit citizens formed the Colored Methodist Society, which became the core of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The group held meetings in a hall which was donated by the Detroit Common Council. The Society moved several times, before a church was built on Lafayette in the 1840s. In 1841 the church assumed its present name and organization. From its inception, the church has served in a number of ways; it has provided a school for black children, an agency to assist southern migrants, and a bureau for labor and housing. Today the church remains a focal point for community social services.

Life in the 1880's
The African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal, Zion and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches in Indiana Sheryl D. Vanderstel The first of the three main black Methodist denominations began in Philadelphia with Rev. Richard Allen. Born into slavery and converted to Methodism at the age of 17, Allen almost immediately knew he was called to preach. His owner allowed Richard and his brother to join a Methodist class meeting, led by Delaware farmer John Gray. Allen's owner was so taken by Allen's sincerity that he next allowed interracial religious gathering on his property. Finally, converted to Methodism himself, Allen's owner arranged for the Allen brother to buy their freedom. When Allen won his legal victory he issued an invitation to other black ME congregations to assemble in convention. There were sixteen representatives at the convention in Philadelphia, representing churches in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, which joined together to form the African Methodist Episcopal Church in April 1816. They immediately elected Richard Allen as their first bishop. The group determined to adhere to traditional Methodism and adopted a Discipline almost identical to the ME Discipline. The Methodist church had a system of licensed elders, deacons, lay ministers and exhorters to assist in the local church work. This system was adopted not only by the AME but also later by the AME Zion and CME denominations. The bishop headed the church body, which was divided into conferences; each led by a bishop. Each conference then was subdivided into districts. Within a district there could be several circuits. A presiding elder directed the work of the conference. Ordained deacons were the senior circuit riders or local congregational ministers.

From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
The African Methodist Episcopal Church , usually called the "AME Church," is a Christian denomination founded by Bishop Richard Allen in Philadelphia Pennsylvania , in . The church was organized by African-American members of St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church . The incident that led to this was the removal of Absalom Jones (1746-1818) from St. George's by the trustees while he was in the act of prayer. The congregation supported the act of the trustees, and Allen and Jones led the African-American members to form the Bethel Church for Negro Methodists in Philadelphia . In general, they adopted the doctrines and form of government of the Methodist Episcopal Church It is not the same as the U.A.M.E. Church founded in Delaware by Peter Spencer in 1813. African Methodist Episcopal Church,
black Methodist church in the United States, formally organized in 1816. It developed from a congregation formed by a group of blacks who withdrew in 1787 from St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia because of discrimination. They built Bethel African Methodist Church in Philadelphia, and in 1799 Richard Allen q.v. ) was ordained its minister by Bishop Francis Asbury of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1816 Asbury consecrated Allen bishop of the newly organized African Methodist Episcopal Church. Confined to the Northern states before the American Civil War , the church spread rapidly in the South after the war.
